Bangalore, January 16: Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda on Sunday said his government will provide financial help to the minority community, like the way mutts and temples are being given funds.

Speaking after laying the foundation stone for constructing a Haj Bhavan in Hegde Nagar off Bellary Road on the outskirts of Bangalore, he said his government will treat all communities equally and help activities of any community which is aimed at the wellbeing of society.

“The BJP government does not believe in helping religious mutts or temples alone. After coming to power, it has sanctioned maximum funds for the welfare of minorities. I want to see a Haj Bhavan in the city which is among the best in the country,” he said.

Of 60 to 70 lakh Muslim population in Karnataka, about 50,000 go on Haj pilgrimage every year and the Haj Bhavan had been a long standing demand of the pilgrims. Of the total 40 crore project to construct Haj Bhavan, the government has already released Rs 15 crore. The remaining money will be released as and when it is required, he said.

Displaying his anguish over neglecting senior Congress leader C K Jaffer Sharief at a public function, JD(S) legislator Syed Zameer Ahmed Khan vadalised chairs and tables right in front of the Chief Minister.

Khan was initially upset against the organisers for mentioning Sharief's name at the bottom of the invitation. When Secretary to Minority Welfare department Syed Zameer Pasha did not heed to Khan's request to welcome Sharief soon after the Cabinet Ministers, the JD(S) MLA broke the drinking water glass into pieces and flung chairs and tables to register his protest.

Khan, who is a MLA from Chamarajpet and a member of Karnataka Haj Committee, complained that Sharief has been neglected despite his being a prominent leader of the minority community. Some supporters of Khan and Sharief started shouting slogans. When the situation seemed to be going out of control, Sharief himself intervened and pacified them all.

Later, Gowda took exception to Khan's style of protesting. "I feel sorry for this incident. I did not expect him to lose his temper so fast. I am the Chief Minister of 6.5 crore people of Karnataka and also a humble man. Anyone from Muslim community can come and meet me any time. But such angry outburst is undesirable,” he stated.

New Delhi, Mar 19: Senior Congress leader Oscar Fernandes on Wednesday extolled the virtues of 'gaumutra' and shared an anecdote about a man claiming to have cured his cancer by drinking cow urine to drive his point home.

Participating in a debate in Rajya Sabha on two bills for setting up national commissions for homoeopathy and Indian systems of medicine, the former Union minister said, "My extreme friend Jairam Ramesh pulls my leg, when I talk of 'gaumutra'."

Sharing an anecdote, Fernandes said once during a visit to an ashram near Meerut he had met a person who claimed to have cured his cancer by drinking 'gaumutra'.

Many BJP leaders have earlier spoken about the healing power of 'gaumutra'. The Congress has reacted sharply to such remarks.

He also praised the virtues of the Indian systems of medicine. He said when he had severe pain in knee joint and doctors had suggested for replacement surgery. However, he refused and started doing 'Vajrasana'.

"I started Vajrasana, practising yoga, and today I am able to do wrestling without any difficulty," the septuagenarian leader said.

"When (former) prime minister (Atal Bihari) Vajypee ji had a knee surgery, I thought if I had known him earlier, I would have definitely gone to him and ask him to follow 'Vajrasan' and it could have been cured," he said.

He also claimed to have met a person in US aged around 104 years and moving swiftly as a young man.

"Yoga is our wealth. If you practise yoga, may be our budget cost of health can be reduced by 50 per cent. It's way of life," he said.

"Our own Indian systems of medicine will provide a lot of reliefs even before going to a doctor," he said.

Though Fernandes supported the bills but raised objection over the exclusion of yoga and naturopathy.

"I would urge the minister either to amend the bill or bring an assurance that it will bring a separate legislation to cover yoga and naturopathy," he said.

Bengaluru, Feb 14: BJP leader and Karnataka Revenue Minister R Ashok refused to comment on the Bellary car accident case, allegedly involving his son, saying that the matter was still under investigation and that they did not have anything to do with the said car.

The car crash took place on February 10, when a speeding red Mercedes Benz allegedly driven by Ashok's son rammed into a tea stall by the roadside killing two people. While a 16-year-old boy Ravi died on the spot, one of the car's passengers was also killed in the accident.

"I came to know about the incident and also heard that two people have died and a few others have sustained injuries. Everybody is equal under the law. It is not fair to comment as a minister when the case is being investigated," Ashok told reporters here on Thursday.

However, the minister avoided answering questions about his son's presence in the car and said that they had "no connection" with the car.

"The case is in the investigation stage, I don't want to comment on anything. My son's name is not present in the FIR. We have no connection with the car," he said.

Superintendent of Police CK Baba told reporters that Ashok's son was not present in the car.

"There was no senior BJP leader and Revenue Ministers's son in the car. We will not hide anything and the case will be investigated," Baba said.
