Curtains come down on 17th National Youth Festival

Mangalore, January 16. Curtains came down on the five-day long 17th National Youth Festival on Monday with the Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda laying emphasis on the urgent need to infuse young blood and vigor at the all levels of administration especially at the grassroots levels of the Department of Youth Services and Sports.

The valedictory ceremony got off to a colourful start with cultural troupes from various states of India once again unleashing the mesmerizing hues of Indian cultural through a vibrant procession in front of the tens of thousands of spectators at Mangala Stadium in this coastal city.

Addressing the national assembly of youth, Mr Gowda pointed out that the Mangala Stadium, which was jam-packed with young crowd, was an evidence to the fact that the India's folk culture can still connected with Gen Y and enthuse them.

“We have all heard and read about India being a land of diverse cultures and talents. Over the last five days, the people of Mangalore, Karnataka, India and SAARC countries have witnessed and experienced the concept of 'Celebrating Diversity in Unity' coming to life with young talented delegates coming together, demonstrating their rich cultural heritage and weaving a magical tapestry of India”, the CM said. “We have felt the true warmth of this big family we shared during the past five days”, he added.

Reaffirming the state government's commitment to provide greater platform for the youth, the CM said more of such platforms need to be provided to youth of India to discover their roots, strengths and talents, become confident, develop self-worth to lead society; lead India.

“My government is committed to this by enabling the latent potential of youth power in its entirety to work towards nation building activities”, he assured.

He also said that the youth I see in front of him as the ambassadors of cultural heritage and unity, would be tomorrow's leaders who would take India forward.

Pointing to the surge in the population of youth in Asia and India, he lamented that the work towards enabling the youth of this nation has hitherto not been given the importance it deserves.

The Chief Minister pledged to take a lead from this youth festival and to revamp the schemes and introduce new programmes through the Department of Youth Services and Sports in the larger interest of youth.

“The Youth Rally will be modeled more on the lines of the youth festival. We will broad-base it by introducing new competitions and events, inspiring fresh talent”, he said.

He said that the training programs in life skills development will be strengthened and the scope will be expanded to imbibe the teachings of Swami Vivekananda.

He also said that the State Government has decided to celebrate Youth Week in a more meaningful way from now on. “Steps will be taken to connect the ideals of Swami Vivekananda with the values our youth and our people require for everyday life”, he added.


In his welcome address, Principal Secretary of Youth Services and Sports I R Perumal informed that as many as 6,318 participants from across the 28 States and seven Union Territories along with SAARC delegates took part in the event.

Chairman of Legislative Council D H Shankar Murthy presided over the programme.

Minister for Medical Education and Technical Education and Youth Service and Sports, in Government of Jammu and Kashmir Rajendra Singh Chib, Dakshina Kannada District In-charge Minister Krishna J Palemar, Mangalore MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, Deputy Speaker of Karnataka Legislative Assembly N Yogish Bhat, Mulky-Moodbidri MLA Abhayachandra Jain Coastal Development Authority Chairman B Nagaraj Shetty, former international athletes Uday K Prabhu, Sri M P Ganesh and Arjun Devaiah were present among others on the occasion.

May 1: India on Thursday called as "propaganda" certain social media posts from the Arab world alleging harassment of Muslims in several parts of the country in the name of containing the spread of coronavirus.

Strongly rebutting the charges, External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said the Gulf countries are deeply committed to friendly relations with India and they are even seeking bilateral talks on the post-COVID-19 economic recovery.

Talking about India's close and traditional ties with the Arab countries, he said New Delhi is ensuring uninterrupted supply of food and essential commodities to the region during Ramzan as part of its deep-rooted friendship.

Srivastava said the countries in the region do not support any interference in India's internal affairs.

"Much of what you see is propaganda by interested parties. Stray tweets can not be used to characterise our bilateral ties with these countries. The real picture of these relations is very much different," he said during an online media briefing.

There has been a wave of angry reactions on Twitter by leading citizens and rights activists from various Arab countries following allegations that Muslims are being blamed for spreading COVID-19 in several parts of India.

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, a powerful bloc of 57 countries, recently accused India of "Islamophobia". India rejected the charges as regrettable.

"We have been making special efforts to ensure uninterrupted supply of food and essential commodities which are required during the Ramzan period in these countries, and this is something which has been greatly appreciated. These countries also want a priority discussion with India on the post-COVID-19 economic recovery," Srivastava said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar have been in regular touch with their counterparts from the region in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

"In these discussions, there have been requests for sending medicines and medical teams to these countries. We already deployed a Rapid Response Team in Kuwait. There is also a request to send doctors and nurses from India," said Srivastava.

"What comes out clearly is that these countries are deeply committed to friendly relations with India. They also do not support any interference in internal matters of India. It is, therefore, important that the friendly and cooperative nature of our relations is accurately recognised and the misuse of social media is not given credence," he added.

Asked about reports of an order issued by Oman's Finance Ministry asking all state-owned companies to replace foreign workers with qualified local Omanis, Srivastava said it is not aimed at Indians working in the Gulf nation.

"The policy is a decades-old one and not specific to India. It does not target the Indians in any way," he said.

There have been apprehensions that the order will render thousands of Indians working in state-run firms in Oman jobless.

"They greatly value relationship with India. Government of Oman is taking special care of Indians which included free testing for coronavirus, its treatment, providing food," the MEA spokesperson said.

Oman government is also extending certain categories of visas of Indians.

Srivastava said India has been in touch with its friends and partners across the world as part of the collaborative approach to dealing with the pandemic.

Udupi, May 30: A total of 45 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) patients, including 17 children were discharged after recovery from the designated hospital in Udupi.

This comes as a big relief amid the rising number of cases in the district.

A total of 164 cases has been confirmed in the district so far.

Bengaluru, Jul 31: The Karnataka government on Wednesday put on hold a controversial proposal to drop certain chapters, including on Islam, Christianity, Tipu Sultan and his father Hyder Ali, from social science textbooks to reduce the 2020-21 syllabi for students in classes 1-10.

Citing the COVID-19 pandemic and the disruption caused to the academic calendar of the year, the government had earlier dropped the chapter on Tipu Sultan and Hyder Ali from the Class 7 social science textbook, saying chapters on Tipu Sultan have been retained in the Class 6 and 10 textbooks.

The move did not go down well with the opposition, which saw certain ulterior motives behind the decision.

Apparently under sharp criticism, the Department of Public Instruction issued a new notification on Wednesday "on the directions of the Karnataka Primary and Secondary Education Minister S Suresh Kumar".

There is a delay in opening the schools during the academic year 2020-21 due to COVID-19 pandemic, said the latest order.

In this context, the order said, chapters were dropped to fit in 120 days of the academic year for classes 1 to 10 and the same was published in the department's website.

"However, on the directions of the Minister for Primary and Secondary Education, the decision to drop certain chapters has been put on hold. A review will be done following which the deleted chapters will be uploaded in the website," the order read.

Earlier in the day, Mr Kumar had issued a statement, saying that the decision to truncate the syllabus has not been finalised yet. He also made it clear that his department would not remove chapters unnecessarily.

Former chief minister and Congress leader Siddaramaiah had attacked the government on the issue.

"The government, which has failed to control the spread of coronavirus, is using it as an opportunity to push its clandestine agenda of saffronising the textbooks," Siddaramaiah tweeted.
