VS_17Jan0Mangalore, January 17: Dazzling lights, lots of fun, and pulsating music marked the concluding part of the hugely succesfull 17th National Youth Fest 2012. Vasundhara Das, the multi talented versatile singer crooned for the young crowd which had packed the Mangala Stadium on a Monday night.

Vasundhara entered the stage soon after the prize winning performances of folk art and a magic show by popular Kudroli Ganesh. She entered with dazzling lights focused on her and received a roaring applause from the 30,000 strong crowd. She made her impact with a “happy” number singing the popular kannada song “Santhoshakke” from Sandalwood. As she sounded more and more Kannada numbers the crowd went crazy. Her performance was a mix of numbers from Bollywood and Sandalwood. The interesting thing with her performance was that Vasundhara bonded with the crowd instantly. She made audience sway and sing along with her. Satish who has come all the way from Haryana said, “Vasundhara's performance is a fitting end to this wonderful youth fest. I will be missing all the moments here and am taking back fond memories of my life.”

Vasundhara instantly had the crowd swaying to the numbers like “Where is the party”, Salaam Namaste”, “Shakalaka”. She went on to entertain the audience with more foot tapping numbers. Her shrill voice reached the far ends of the stadium which made audience go berserk.

After five days of competition and hard work, the youth had so much fun at the concert that the choice of Vasundhara was a fitting end to the five day extravaganza. Vasundhara's band comprised of two electronic guitarists, a key board guy and a talented drummer. The pulsating speakers, which were meant for a crowd made them dance. Small groups of youngsters were seen dancing in groups.

Popular Kannada film numbers like “Gaalipata” made the youngsters want more and more from the artist. Another interesting fact about the concert was that even though there were participants from all over India who did not understand the language of Kannada songs, they enjoyed to their heart's content.

One of the favourite acts of the versatile artist was holding the mic to the audience so that the crowd could sing along with her. Many of the youth felt this bonding with Vasundhara as she kept asking the audience whether they were singing along with her. With a crowd like this the artist was not disappointed as she saw for herself the enthusiasm from the strong crowd.

Her interactive style went well with the audience and they one could hear voices asking for the popular Tamil number “ Kolaveri Di”. The crowd was not disappointed as even that request of theirs was granted. It was an evening which left the audience want another Youth fest like this and they did not have to go with a Kolaveri mood.

According to officials, buses started plying from Mangaluru to Bengaluru, Mysuru, Shivamogga, Hubballi and other areas with limited passengers. A bus, which left for Bengaluru from Mangaluru had less than 30 passengers on board.

“Depending on the demand, the buses will be operated with 50% of the capacity. Measures have been taken to ensure that social distancing norms are adhered to while purchasing tickets from the counter,” said S N Arun, KSRTC Divisional Controller.

However, the KSRTC is yet to take a decision on operating Nagarasarige buses in the city.

Bengaluru, Jan 10: The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST), which met with officials of the Social Welfare Department Thursday, has urged the state government to increase the reservation provided to the ST community.

The Commission's suggestion comes even as a committee headed by Justice Nagamohan Das is currently studying a demand for increase of reservation for the community from the existing 3% to 7.5%.

Addressing mediapersons on Thursday, Commission Chairperson Nand Kumar Sai, said the Commission had discussed the issue with the Social Welfare Department, Karnataka, asking officials to expedite the process.

In response to this suggestion, Social Welfare Department Principal Secretary G Kumar Naik said the government would take a call based on the Nagamohan Das Committee's report.

A meeting was held between members of the National ST Commission and the Social Welfare Department Thursday with regard to various projects taken up by the department.

In June last year, the then Kumaraswamy-led coalition government constituted the Justice Nagamohan Das Committee, after protests from members of the Valmiki community for an increase in reservation to 7.5%. At present, Karnataka provides 15% reservation for SCs, 3% for STs and 32% for other backward classes (OBC).

The national commission also urged the state government to ensure permanent faculty in all the 824 residential institutions run by the department. At present, as much as 50% of the faculty in these institutions have been hired on a contractual basis. "We have assured that the recruitment will be done in a short time," Naik told mediapersons.

Mangaluru, July 29: Justifying the transfer of Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh, district in-charge minister Kota Shrinivas Poojari has accused Mangaluru MLA U T Khader of politicizing the issue.

The IAS officer was transferred by the Karnataka government on July 28, a day after a saffron activist issued a death threat against her on social media after she warned of legal action against the miscreants who attack cattle traders.

Condemning the development, Mr Khader had tweeted that the state government has punished the deputy commissioner instead of punishing the culprit, who issued death threat.

Responding to Mr Khader’s tweet, Mr Poojari said that the transfer of the officer was on administrative ground. “It is unfortunate that Khader politicized a transfer carried out by the government on administrative ground. This is not Khader’s time to protect any accused,” tweeted Mr Poojari.

It is worth mentioning here that Mr Khader was the district in-charge minister of Dakshina Kannada before Mr Poojari taking over the position.

Meanwhile, police has arrested a person in connection with the death threat against the IAS officer.
