Chief Minister's convoy vehicle kills pedestrian in M'lore; Rs 1 lakh compensation announced

Mangalore, January 17: A man was killed after he was hit by a speeding vehicle escorting Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda on Tuesday morning near Panambur on the outskirts of the city.

The victim has been identified as Chandrahas, a resident of Konaje Kambala Padavu. He was a labourer at CPC Transport Company in Baikampdady. The vehicle hit him soon after he alighted from a bus.

It is learnt the accident occurred when District In-charge Minister Krishna J Palemar's escort vehicle driven by Arun Alva, was escorting the CM, when the latter was returning after paying visit to Sri Gopala Krishna Bhajana Mandali. Mr Palemar too had accompanied the CM.

Chandrahas critically injured when the speeding escort vehicle knocked him down. Though he was rushed to a private hospital in the city, he breathed his last without responding to any treatment.

Sources from Panambur police station said that there was at least half a kilometer gap between CM's vehicle and the escort vehicle.

A case has been registered in Panambur police station.

Compensation

Meanwhile District In-charge minister Krishan J Palemar has promised to provide Rs 1 lakh compensation from Chief Minister's Relief Fund to the family members of the deceased.

“The family of Chandrahas would receive Rs 1 lakh compensation from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. I would also discuss with the CM for more compensation”, Mr Palemar said.

New Delhi, Mar 21: Karnataka Health and Family Welfare Minister B. Sriramulu on Saturday informed that one more person was tested positive for the coronavirus in the state.

He said that a total of 16 persons have been tested positive for COVID-19 in the state so far.

The victim had come from Mecca and was kept in quarantine facility by the state authorities.

"For a 32-year-old man, who had just returned from a trip to Mecca has found COVID-19 positive. The infection has been confirmed. He has already been treated at an isolated ward of the hospital. Citizens must not have any sort of anxiety," tweeted Sriramulu.

Also, the news and public relations department, the Indian Red Cross Society and the Karnataka State Labour Studies Institute have invited volunteers for the programme to provide real-time information to people to avoid spreading rumours and misinformation about coronavirus.

At least four volunteers will work in four shifts per day in each taluk of the state. There are about 120 volunteers in Bengaluru city and about 3,000 Corona Warriors are expected to register from across the state. Over 400 volunteers have registered via online application on the first day.

Chikkamagaluru, Jun 13: Deputy Commissioner Dr Bagadi Gautham said that movement of heavy vehicles has been banned from Tanikodi to S K Border on NH 169 (Mangaluru to Solapur) from June 15 to August 15.

In an official statement issued here on Friday evening, he said that due to heavy rain lashing in the District the minor bridges on the stretch at Umbalagere, Goravanahalli and Gulaganji are in a dilapidated condition. As a precautionary measure, the movement of heavy vehicles has been banned.

As an alternative, all the vehicles (below 15 tonnes) from Chikmagalur can travel via Baliho Nur-Magundi-Kalasa-Kudremukh-SK Border. The vehicles from NR Pura (below 15 tonnes) should travel via Koppa-Hariharapura-Bidaragodu-Agumbe.

Bengaluru, Aug 2: A total of 5,532 new cases of COVID-19 and 84 deaths were reported in Karnataka in the last 24 hours, the state's health department informed on Sunday.

With this, the Karnataka's COVID-19 tally now stands at 1,34,819 positive cases, including 74,590 active cases and 57,725 discharges.
So far, 2,496 deaths have been reported from the state.

India's COVID-19 count on Sunday crossed the 17 lakh-mark with 54,736 positive cases and 853 deaths reported in the country.

"The total COVID-19 cases stand at 17,50,724 including 5,67,730 active cases, 11,45,630 cured/discharged/migrated and 37,364 deaths," said the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry.
