Explosion at MRPL kills one, injures five

Mangalore, January 21: A worker was killed and five others suffered severe burns when an explosion ripped through a sulphur pit at the Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited on the outskirts of the city on Saturday.

The victim has been identified as Nagesh (25), a resident of Kulai.

The injured have been identified as Basheer (24) from Chokkabettu, Sirajuddin (23), from Katipalla, Ashwith (23), Srinivas (33) and Mahesh Kumar. All of them have been admitted to KMC hospital in the city. Among the injured the condition of Basheer is said to be critical.

An official release, issued by MPRL, stated that a mild explosion that occurred around 11: 15 am at the Sulphur Recovery Unit II injured six people working in that area and one of the injured breathed his last later.

Four of among the injured were contract employees from Entech Constructions, and one from Sri Ganesh Constructions, while, Mahesh Kumar was an employee of MRPL, it said.

“The management is investigating the incident. A committee has been constituted and a detailed report is awaited”, the release said.

The release also said that “MRPL prides itself on its safety record and this freak accident is being viewed very seriously”

All possible efforts are being made to prevent any such incident in the opertaing area, it added.

Mangaluru, July 30: Medical doctor turned IAS officer K V Rajendra assumed charge as the 130th deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district here today.

The 2013 batch Karnataka cadre officer succeeds Sindhu B Rupesh, who was transferred as Director of Electronic Delivery of Citizen Services (EDCS), Bengaluru. The outgoing DC welcomed the new DC in the presence of staff. 

Dr Rajendra said that he expects cooperation from all stakeholders in administering the district, amidst the mounting Covid-19 cases.

Rajendra, an alumnus of JJM Medical College, Davanagere, was serving as the CEO of Belagavi zilla panchayat before being posted as DC of this coastal district. 

Having served as assistant commissioner of Puttur sub-division for nearly a year from December 2015, Dr Rajendra, hails from Thirthahalli in Shivamogga district, had his probationary training in Bidar. He posted as CEO of Ballari ZP where he worked for nearly three till 21, 2019.

He also had a brief stint as assistant secretary in the department of fertiliser with the ministry of chemicals and fertilisers.

Sindhu who was the CEO of Udupi zilla panchayat had succeeded Sasikanth Senthil, who resigned from the Indian Administrative Service on September 6, 2019. She had taken charge on September 7, 2019.

Bengaluru, Apr 19:  Karnataka's Technical Education department following Union Home Ministry’s guidelines, on Sunday directed all its colleges not to use the Zoom application to conduct online classes during the ongoing lockdown period.

Considering Union Home Ministry's advisory that Zoom app is not safe, the department has taken the decision and issued a circular asking all government, aided and unaided engineering, polytechnic (Diploma) colleges to stop using the app immediately.

The department recommended the use of a free app developed by TCS: "TCS iON Digital class room" or any other App recommended by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to conduct the online classes.

Hubli, Feb 17: A local court here on Monday sent three Kashmiri students who were arrested on charges of sedition to judicial custody till March 2.

They were arrested for allegedly raising pro-Pakistan slogans and posting a video of the same on social media, told police.

All three were taken into custody by the police on Sunday night and were produced before a local court on Monday.
