Mangalore, January 21: As many as 200 Youth Congress workers here on Saturday registered their names to donate their eyes after their death to Udupi based Prasad Netralaya.

Veteran Congress leader and former Union minister B Janardhan Poojary formally handed over the filled registration forms of eye donation to Prasad Netralaya chairman Krishna Prasad at the Youth Congress Convention organized at Town Hall.

Mr Poojary also encouraged the congress workers to set an example before the society.

State ignoring youth

Speaking at the Convention State Youth Congress president Rizwan Arshad said that the BJP led Karnataka Government has completely ignored the youth of the state. “The BJP leaders have forgotten their poll-time pledge of Rs 15,00 unemployment allowance for unemployed youth” he said.

He said that the State government even failed to effectively implement various schemes of Union government.

Mr Arshad went on to ridicule the recent proposal of Youth Budget by Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda saying that it would be as useless as the 'agriculture budget' of former CM B S Yeddyurappa.

Misusing Youth Power

Mr Arshan accused the Sangh Parivar of misusing the youth power and leading youth towards communalism. The recent incident of the hoisting of Pakistani national flag at Tahsildar's office in Sindagi by Hindutva activists is a small example for the disastrous tricks of communal forces, he said.

Gandhinagar MLA Dinesh Gundu Rao said that the biggest achievement of the first ever BJP government of South India, to create most corrupt chief minister in the history of the state. “The first BJP CM of the state has created history by becoming the first CM to be imprisoned”, he said.

Dakshina Kannada district Congress Committee president B Ramanath Rai, Mangalore MLA U T Khader and other Congress leaders Vijayakumar Shetty, Priyanka Kharge, Bondala Jagannath Shetty, Mamatha Gatty were also present among others.

Kalaburgi, May 27: Karnataka's Kalaburgi district recorded a maximum temperature of 44 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, as per information provided by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

In light of the increasing mercury levels, people here were seen consuming sugarcane juice and cold drinks to beat the heat. Animals and birds could also be seen searching for water for relief from the scorching sun.

Locals of the area requested the district administration to take necessary actions such as spraying water on roads, in order to bring down the temperatures.

"We are facing huge heat waves in this district from the past two days, and even the temperature is around 44 to 45 degrees on a daily basis. So, it is a very alarming situation in Kalaburgi. When we move around the city, we are unable to find water and fresh fruit juice, and even if fresh juice is available, we are afraid of getting infected by COVID-19," said one local.

"If we carry cold water, it gets warm within half an hour, and gets unfit for drinking, and it is tough for us. I request the district administration to look into this matter and do the needful such as spraying water on the roads, etc. for slightest relief," he added.

Mangaluru/Udupi, Aug 2: The twin coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi witnessed sporadic movement of vehicles and relatively less commercial activities today in spite of the withdrawal of ‘Sunday lockdown’ by the state government.

After the central government announced guidelines under Unlock 3.0, the Karnataka government has removed the complete lockdown concept on Sundays and done away with the night curfews too. So from today (August 2), there will be no lockdown on Sundays.

KSRTC operated its buses as usually. However, compared to other days, today the number of private and city buses on the roads in Dakshina Kannada was limited.

In Udupi, city buses remained off the roads as the number of passengers was less. However, KSRTC and NARM buses were seen transporting passengers.

In containment zones ban on movement of people will continue till August 31 in Udupi. The Santhekatte market used to function on Saturdays, as there was Sunday lockdown on earlier Sundays. Now the market will be open on Sundays only.
