Kambala thrills children at Srujanotsav

Mangalore, January 25: Children squealed with delight when buffaloes charged in the marshy water at the Kambala organised as a part of Srujanotsav at Pilikula on Tuesday.

The non-competitive, demonstrative Kambala was held to introduce the essence of Tulunadu to the young participants from various parts of India. As many as 10 pair of buffaloes participated in the race which was held in two marshy tracks in front of Guthu Mane at Pilikula.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Bernard D'Souza from Gurupura said that he has participated in many Kambalas but this will be the memorable one, as it was performed for children. D'Souza and his pair of buffaloes Pandu and Raja have participated in many Kambalas since two years. “I feed them 2 kg horse gram in morning and evening. I also give them a hot water bath and massage,” says D'Souza.

Naveen Chandra Alva has brought his priced buffaloes Raja and Gopala which won him the gold medal at Kambala organised at Moodbidri recently.

“I spend Rs 800 every day for the pair of buffaloes. They are reared only for the Kambla purpose. Participating in Kambala is a matter of prestige,” he says.One could sense a feeling of unity and religious harmony as four Kambala participants were Christians, two were Muslims and the rest were Hindus.

“I loved the Kambala. It was entertaining as well as refreshing. It gives us a village feel, which is a rare experience for the children who live in city. I had heard about it but I saw it for the first time,” said Namrata from Mysore Bal Bhavan.

However, Shilpa from Maharashtra was not happy with what she saw. “The riders beat the buffaloes. It is wrong to seek pleasure by torturing animals,” she said.

Mangaluru, July 30: The Social Democratic Party of India has condemned the move by the state government to drop a lesson on legendary Mysuru rulers Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan from the class 7 textbook.

The Department of Public Instruction has omitted the chapter from the textbooks of Class 7 in their attempt to reduce syllabus for state board schools by 30 per cent.

The department, however, has decided to retain similar chapters on Tipu Sultan in 6th and 10th Classes, though the syllabus in text books for all classes from 1 to 10th has been trimmed. 

In a media release statement, SDPI State President Ilyas Mohammed Thumbe termed the move as communally motivated. “By dropping the lesson, the BJP-led government is engaged in saffronisation of education,” he alleged.

He said that Tipu was the most prominent freedom fighter, who had given priority to irrigation, rocket technology and harmony. The BJP government is also planning to scrap lessons on the Constitution, secularism and democracy. By twisting history, the BJP is trying to mislead the younger generation, he added.

Bengaluru, Feb 12: Mohammed Nalapad, son of Karnataka Congress MLA NA Harris, who allegedly rammed his sports car into vehicles and a kiosk, injuring 4, on Bellary road in Bengaluru on February 9, said that he was not in the car which met with the accident.

Bengaluru Joint Commissioner of Police, Traffic, Ravikante Gowda told media, "Mohammed Nalapad appeared before the investigating officer today. He was arrested following interrogation. We are collecting evidence and will file a charge sheet shortly."

Nalapad is out on bail, in connection with the matter where he had assaulted a man in a pub in Bengaluru in 2018.

"I was not in the car which met with accident. I was travelling in a Lamborghini car which was moving ahead of the car. However, I called people to rescue the victims. We took them to the hospital and paid their hospital bill," said Mohammed Nalapad.

Mangaluru, Jun 2: Even as the mosques in Karnataka recieved green signal from state government to reopen for congregational prayers from June 8, a senior Islamic scholar in coastal Karnataka has encouraged Muslims to prefer to offer prayers at homes during covid times. 

Twaqa Ahmed Al-Azhari, the Qadhi of Mangaluru, has welcomed the state government's decision to allow Muslims to offer congregational prayers including Jum'a prayers with certain precautions and conditions.

"Government has upheld our religions sentiments. All the mosques where congregational prayers will be held from June 8 should strictly follow all the guidelines issued by the government," he said. 

He also suggested that if any mosque is not in a position to follow all the guidelines issued by the government then it should refrain from holding congregational prayers. "Muslims can continue offer Fard and Jumá prayers at homes as the cornavirus pandemic is still spreading in the region and across the world," he said.
