Teachings of Ambigara Chowdaiah still relevant: Baraguru

Mangalore, January 25: The principles and teachings of Ambigara Chowdaiah, a social reformer of the 12th century, are still relevant and apt to the present globalized and modern world said noted Kannada writer Baraguru Ramachandrappa.

He was speaking after inaugurating a chair of 'Ambigara Chowdaiah' at Old Senate Hall, Mangalore University here on Wednesday January 25. He said everybody should practice and inculcate his principles in life.

He said that Chowdaiah was a reformer who fought against the ill-practices of the society such as casteism, untouchability etc eight centuries ago.

Mr Ramachandrappa said that the sharpness in Chowdaiah 'Vachana' indicated his confidence. “He represented working class of 12th century”, he said.

Criticising the present education system, Mr Ramachandrappa said that students are told to 'sail the boat which is anchored.' He stressed on social education for the present generation.

He also lauded the University's effort to set up a chair on Chowdaiah. He said, “Having chairs on Nehru, Buddha, Ambedkar and now on Chowdaiah, Mangalore University has exhibited the values of secularism, justice, while fulfilling the necessity of the present generation.”

In his presidential address, Mangalore University Vice Chancellor Prof. T.C. Shivashankara Murthy said that the new Chair aimed at making people know about works of Ambigara Chowdaiah. It would also find the status of fishermen in the region and conduct various research studies, he said.

Ambigara Chowdaiah was a saint who belonged to the Ambiga (Ferryman) community. He was a follower of Basavanna. He is very close to the people of fishermen community.

Bengaluru, Feb 23: The sleuths of Custom Department have seized ephedrine worth Rs 5 Crore in courier terminal of Air Cargo complex in Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), the department said on Sunday.

Customs Joint Commissioner M J Chethan, in a statement, said that Central Intelligence Unit, Air Cargo Complex, scanned the package while verifying export consignments and found concealment of some powder. 5.04 kg of Ephedrine worth Rs 5 crore was packed in polythene pouches and concealed between cardboard layers of wedding invitation cards.

Detailed examination of the Wedding cards revealed banned drugs hidden between 43 wedding invitation cards in the package that also contained a few clothes.

Bengaluru, Feb 4: Congress MLA UT Khader on Tuesday alleged that B.S. Yediyurappa-led government has stopped providing free food to poor families under 'Anna Bhagya' scheme from last two months which was started by the Congress in the state.

"Former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had started a scheme 'Anna Bhagya' under which free rice and wheat to 494 education institutions, NGOs, and old age homes were provided and the present government has stopped providing benefits to the poor people," said the MLA.

Alleging that the present government has stopped with the scheme Khadar said, "From last two months the government has stopped providing free food to the institutes and NGOs."

Khadar further demanded to restart the scheme to help the poor students.

"They should restart the scheme which supports poor students and old age houses, or congress will protest if the scheme is not restarted."

Last year in August, Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa had said that his government has no plans to stop any "pro-people schemes" including Anna Bhagya.

"Our government has no plans to scrap any of the pro-people schemes. Our Government is a pro-people Government. I have already signed the file to release grants to continue the "Anna Bhagya scheme" the twitter handle of Karnataka Chief Minister's Office had quoted him as saying.

Mangaluru, May 15: Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police on Friday warned those who are opposing quarantine to either go for it or face legal action under Epidemic Diseases Act.

In a release here on Friday, Mr B M Laxmi Prasad said that schools and hostels have been identified for quarantining those who arrive from other states. Those, who return, will be quarantined in the respective Gram Panchayat/local bodies’ jurisdiction. The public should not panic over the quarantine facility.

The quarantine facility has been introduced in the interest of the general public. If anyone opposes or protests against such facility, then legal action will be initiated against them, he warned.
