Countdown begins for grand anointing of Bahubali

Mangalore, January 27: With just 24-hours left for the grand anointing (Maha mastakabhisheka) of the 35-foot tall monolithic statue of Bahubali, at historical Venoor town in Belthangady taluk, devotees from across the country have begun to arrive in large numbers.

The nine-day long ritual, scheduled to begin at 4 am on January 28, is expected to attract about three lakh people from all over India, especially from North India. It will be inaugurated by Chief Minister D?V?Sadananda Gowda at 3.30 pm on the same day.

Executive President of the Mahamasthakabhisheka Committee V Dhananjaya Kumar (who is also the special representative of Karnataka in Delhi), said that the anointing will be done between 7 pm and 10 pm on all days, though the prayers would begin in the wee hours everyday during the nine days.

Stating that the anointing of the monolith will be done on the first day by the descendants of Thimmannajila Arasa (Dr Padmaprasad Ajila is the 24th descendant), he said the donors and members of the public would be allowed to anoint on the last day (February 5) of Mahamastakabhisheka. The State government had released a sum of Rs 2 crore during the term of then chief minister B?S?Yeddyurappa.

Charukeerthi Pandithacharyavarya Swami of Moodbidri Jain Mutt said each day, the monolith would be anointed with water of 200 tender coconuts, 450 litres of milk, 30 kg rice powder, 70 kg turmeric, 10 litres 'kashaya,' 5 kg pure sandalwood paste, 20 kg diluted sandalwood paste, 250 litre sandalwood oil and 40 kg 'chandana,' among other ingredients.

The anointing will be done with 108 kalashas (pots) during the first five days, which will be followed by 216 pots during the next two days, 504 pots on the eighth day and 1008 Kalashas on the last day.

All the ceremonies will be held under the guidance of munis - Acharya Sri 108 Gunadaranandi Maharaja, Acharya Sri 108 Sudesh Sagar Muni Maharaj, Munisri 108 Pavanakeerthi Munimaharaj and 105 Aaryeeka Sri Jinavani Mathaji.

Going by the history, Thimmannajila Arasa installed the Bahubali statue in Venoor on the banks of Phalguni river in 1604 AD. The first Masthakabhisheka was held in 1928 followed by the second ceremony in 1956 and the third one in 2000.

The 'Pratham Kalasha,' which will be used to anoint the Lord Bahubali on the final day of the 'Mahamastakabhisheka' (Feb 5), the first Kalasha among 1008 Kalashas, has been bought by Delhi-based businessman R?K?Jain for Rs 11 lakh.

There are other Kalashas available too and they include Shathamana Kalasha - Rs five lakh (denoting five centuries of installation of the monolith); Rathna Kalasha - Rs three lakh; Amrutha Kalasha - Rs 2,55,555; Suvarna Kalasha - Rs 1,11,111; Rajatha Kalasha - Rs 55,555; Dhavala Kalasha - Rs 25,555; Shanthi Kalasha - Rs 11,111; Janamangala Kalasha - Rs 5,555; and Bhakthi Kalasha - Rs 2,555. However, most of them have already been sold out.

Bengaluru, May 22: Evacuation planes from Male in Maldives and Doha in Qatar landed in Bengaluru with returnees from Karnataka after they were stranded for two months due to suspension of international flights since March 23 and the extended lockdown, an official said on Friday.
 
"An Air-India flight (#0266) with 152 passengers from Male and its subsidiary Express flight (IX-0822) with 177 returnees and 5 infants from Doha landed here safely at 6.50 pm. and 9.05 pm respectively," an airline official told media persons in Bengaluru.
 
Both the flights are first from their respective countries to Bengaluru, bringing in returnees to the southern state in the second phase of the Vande Bharat mission, being carried out to evacuate Indians stranded the world over.
 
"As per the standard operating procedure and guidelines of the state health department, all the passengers were screened with thermal device and tested to ensure they were asymptomatic before leaving the airport," a nodal officer said.
 
The returnees were given a spare mask to wear all the time and a sanitiser to wash their hands.
 
"The luggage of all passengers was screened and disinfected before handing over to them after they completed formalities such as filling the self-declaration form and downloading of the Quarantine App for contact tracing later,” said the official.
 
The passengers were ferried from the airport in state-run buses in batches for 14-day institutional quarantine in hotels and resorts across the city.
 
The flights were the 6th and 7th flights to Karnataka, of the national carrier and its Express arm, which are operating the service to repatriate thousands of Indians, including distressed workers, migrants, students, senior citizens and tourists, stranded overseas.
 
Five flights have flown about 650 returnees till date from May 18-21 under the mission's second phase to Bengaluru and Mangaluru on the west coast. The passengers have been brought from Dubai in the UAE, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, Muscat in Oman, Dammam in Saudi Arabia and San Francisco in the US.
 
The remaining flights to Karnataka will land in Bengaluru and Mangaluru over the next 12 days till June 3 from 9-10 more destinations the world over.
 
In the first phase of the mission from May 7-17, the airline and its arm flew 6 flights to the state from May 11-15, bringing in 800 passengers, including 623 to Bengaluru and 177 to Mangaluru from London, Singapore, San Francisco and Dubai.

Bengaluru, Jul 23: Karnataka on Thursday recorded a biggest single-day surge of over 5,000 cases and 97 related fatalities, taking the total number of people who tested positive for the virus to 80,863, the health department said. 

The day also saw a record 2,071 patients getting discharged after recovery.

Out of 5,030 fresh cases reported, a whopping 2,207 cases were from Bengaluru urban alone.

As of July 23 evening, cumulatively 80,863 Covid-19 positive cases have been confirmed in the state, which includes 1,616 deaths and 29,310 discharges, the health department said in its bulletin.

It said, out of 49,931 active cases, 49,291 patients are in isolation at designated hospitals and are stable, while 640 are in ICU. Out of the 97 deaths reported on Thursday 48 are from Bengaluru urban, followed by Mysuru 8, Dakshina Kannada 7 and others.

Most of the dead are either with a history of Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) or Influenza-like illness (ILI).

Among the districts where the new cases were reported, Bengaluru urban accounts for 2,207, followed by Raichur 258, Kalaburagi 229, Dakshina Kannada 218, and others.

Bengaluru urban district tops the list of positive cases, with a total of 39,200 infections, followed by Dakshina Kannada 4,209 and Kalaburagi 3,370.

Mangaluru, Jan 26: The Azizuddin Road of Mangaluru’s Bunder area, which had witnessed the brutal killing of two innocent passersby over a month ago, today witnessed the unfurling of Indian national flag by the kin of the police firing victim. 

49-year-old Abdul Jaleel Kandak, a father of two, and 23-year-old Nausheen Kudroli, were killed in an arbitrary and unwarranted police firing during a disturbance occurred due to police baton charge in the city on December 2019. 

A mixed feeling of patriotism and pain prevailed when a group of people gathered on the police firing spot to celebrate the 71st Republic Day of India. Family members of the victims were part of it.

It was Shifani, the daughter of Abdul Jaleel, who unfurled the flag and read out the preamble of the Indian constitution. 

“This is the spot where the constitution of the country was murdered,” said social activist Vidya Dinker, recalling the police firing. “The constitution is being murdered everyday in many states of India. We must regain the constitution and implement it everyday,” she added. 

Journalist Shahnaz M, DYFI leader Imtiyaz BK, SIO leader Talha, NWF leader Shahida Aslam and social activist Shabbir Ahmed were present among others.
