Bhoota Kola amuses Thai PM

Mangalore, January 27: The Bhoota Aradhane culture of Tulu Nadu marked its first presence at the Capital of India, when a colourful tableau from Karnataka rolled down Rajpath at Republic Day parade depicting the cultural heritage of Dakshina Kannad district.

Interestingly Karnataka was the sole participant from the South India during the Republic Day parade at the Capital of India this year.

The spectacular tableau depicting Malaraya Bhoota, a benevolent guardian of human beings who takes care of crops, cattle and belongings, stole the show, among 23 tableaux that offered a glimpse of the country's rich cultural diversity, military might, economic prowess and advances in science and technology at the 63rd Republic Day Parade.

The tableau demonstrated all rituals of worshipping holy spirits. Bhoota Aradhane is prevalent in the coastal district of Dakshina Kannada. Known as Bhuta Kola in Tulu, it is a stylised combination of music and narratives. Fifty-five artistes hailing from different parts and communities of the State celebrated this ritual.

When the tableau of Karnataka rolled down Thailand's first woman Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, who was the chief guest of the Republic Day parade, curiously sought explanations about it form President of India Pratibha Devisingh Patil.

The tableau of Karnataka 'Bhutar Adhane' passes through the Rajpath during the 63rd Republic Day parade in New Delhi on Thursday.

Mysuru, Jan 16: A day after the Mysuru Advocates’ Association refused to defend a student in Mysuru who has been charged with sedition case for displaying a ‘Free Kashmir’ placard, president of the People’s Lawyers’ Guild of Davangere, has come forward to appear in the Court on behalf of her.

Opposing the attack on JNU students and teachers at JNU recently, Nalini had displayed a ‘Free Kashmir’ placard during a protest on January 8 at Manasagangotri of the University of Mysore (UoM) campus here.

Members of the Mysuru Bar Association decided not to represent Nalini.

Gadag, Aug 1: A woman in Gadag district of Karnataka mortgaged her 'mangalsutra' to buy a television set for her children following the Karnataka government's decision to continue the classes through TV amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

A resident of Radder Naganur village, Kasturi, who is also a mother of two, purchased a television set against her 'mangalsutra' for Rs 14,000. She bought the TV after her children's school teachers asked them to attend classes via the television set.

Kasturi said, "I can not send the children to the neighbours' house every day and it was necessary for them to study. We had no other option but to buy a TV set."

She said, "Both, my husband and I are daily wage workers and during coronavirus, we do not have work or money."

"I sold my 'mangalsutra' for Rs 20,000 and bought a TV for Rs 14,000," said Kasturi while happily adding, "Now, my kids can study at home itself."

Kasturi's daughter, Surekha said, "We did not have the TV for several months but now when we have it, we will study and get a bigger 'mangalsutra' for my mother."

Mysuru, Mar 18: Even though the migration season is coming to end and the winged visitors are set to fly back, the water bodies where most birds nest and breed are under close surveillance with the report about spread of bird flu in Mysuru as unusual death of birds can be a cause for worry and hence the authorities are on high alert.

At Karanji Lake, the birds are watched in detail twice – morning and evening. If any sick bird or dead bird is noticed, the Zoo Vets are alerted. So far, no such birds had been sighted. The surveillance data is maintained every day. Intensive surveillance and passive surveillance is done.

Zoo Authority of Karnataka (ZAK) Member Secretary B P Ravi said the birds are doing well and there is no cause for worry with their health monitored constantly along with tests on the bird droppings done every month at the National Institute of High-Security Animal Diseases in Bhopal.
