Govt preventing police from taking action against Kalladka Bhat'

January 27, 2012

Mangalore, January 27: Accusing the BJP-led state government of pressurizing the police department not to take any action against anti-social elements, Congress workers in the city on Friday staged a protest in front of the office of Deputy Commissioner, here.

Speaking on the occasion KPCC Secretary Ivan D'Souza lamented that even though criminal cases were registered against RSS leader Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat and his accomplices for their apparent bid to spread violence in the coastal district, no action was taken against them so far.

A venomous speech delivered by Mr Bhat at a Hindu Samajotsava recently, threatening to kill Muslim youth, had sparked communal tensions in Uppinagady town and its adjacent areas in Puttur taluk. Police had registered cases under IPC section 153A and 295 A for promoting enmities between communities and causing national disintegration against Bhat the following day.

“Though the police were ready to take necessary actions against the culprits and communal goons, the State government has been exerting pressure on the former and preventing them from impartial policing”, Mr D'Souza said.

Coming down heavily on the ruling party, he said that instead of taking action against those who spread violence, the elected representatives from BJP had justified the provocative speeches of Kalladka Bhat.

He also said that the recent untoward incidents of Uppinangady and Sullia were part of wider conspiracy of communal forces, backed by the State government, to spoil communal harmony in the region.

Local leaders of Congress Suresh Ballal, Narendra Kumar, Ibrahim Bawa, Ashok Kumar, Mamata Gatti Shashidar Hegde, Praveen Alva, Farooq, Sudhir TK, Karunakar Shetty, Suresh Shetty and Suresh Baboo took part in the protest among others.

A memorandum seeking the stringent legal action against Kalladka Bhat and his accomplices, was also forwarded to Chief Minister D V Sadanada Gowda through district administration on the occasion.

New Delhi, Jun 4: The Supreme Court on Wednesday sought response from Prajwal Revanna, the grandson of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, on a plea challenging his election in 2019 from Hassan Lok Sabha constituency as a joint candidate of the Janata Dal Secular and the Congress.

A bench of Chief Justice SA Bobde and Justices AS Bopanna and Hrishiksh Roy issued notice to the returned candidate from the high-profile constituency on an appeal challenging the Karnataka High Court's order by which an election petition against his win was dismissed.

In the proceedings held through video-conferencing, the top court issued notice and tagged the appeal filed by G Devarajegowda for hearing with other similar pending plea filed by the BJP candidate on the issue.

Mr Devarajegowda in the plea said that his election petition was dismissed by the High Court on "procedural irregularities". The plea said that Mr Prajwal had resorted to unfair and corrupt practices and his election should be set aside.

It said the High Court did not consider the fact that by dismissing the election petition, it was running a risk of having a representative in parliament who has not got the maximum number of valid votes.

The petitioner, an advocate by profession, sought a declaration of rival BJP candidate, A Manju, as the winner for having secured the maximum number of valid votes.

A separate appeal was earlier filed by Mr Manju against the High Court order and the top court had already issued notice to the retuned candidate on that.

Mr Manju had challenged the 2019 election of Mr Prajwal on the ground that there was allegedly non-disclosure of assets held by him in his election affidavit.

Mr Prajwal was declared winner with 6,76,606 votes. Mr Manju came first runner-up with 5,35,282 votes.

Bengaluru, Apr 11: Karnataka Library Department’s mobile application, which is said to be the first of its kind initiative in the country has seen an exponential growth in downloads during the COVID-19 lockdown, a senior Minister said on Friday. The main reason that the application is growing is due to the heavy students demand as schools and colleges are closed during the 21-day nationwide lockdown.

Students are relying on online material for their studies as they can’t step out of the house and risk being infected.

The Library Department's efforts to keep readers active through the lockdown time, by prompting them to utilise its e-initiatives is paying off, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Suresh Kumar said.

"The app is seeing exponential increase in downloads since its launch. As many as 16,500 people have taken it; while ten thousand people have downloaded it during this brief lock down time itself," he said.

E-library mobile app was released by the library department on February 26.

There are over one lakh e-books available on department's digital platform ranging from arts, humanity, school curriculum, competitive exams and self help to classic novels - all for free for the readers.

"Its needless to say, the variety of attractive content that is available in the app is creating all the buzz among the public. Not just the books, the app contains over 600 educational videos too," the Minister said in a statement.

Considering that over 16,500 readers have downloaded the app since its launch a couple of months back, its high time, we see this domain as an opportunity for growth, he said, and stressed on the need for better adaptability approaches to the changing times.
