All-India major ports shuttle badminton tourney gets underway

Mangalore, January 29: 32nd All-India Major Ports Shuttle Badminton Tournament – 2011-12 jointly hosted by New Mangalore Port Sports Council and Major Ports Sports Control Board commenced at NMPT on Saturday.

Dr P D Vaghela, Chairman, Kandla Port Trust and Major Ports Sports Control Board inaugurated the Tournament at the NMPT Gymkhana premises in the presence of Dr P Tamilvanan, Chairman, NMPT and other dignitaries.

T S N Murthy, Deputy Chairman, NMPT and President of NMP Sports Council, in his welcome address emphasized the need for inculcating sportsman spirit by the players.

In his inaugural address, Dr Vaghela appreciated NMPT for encouraging sports and games by conducting such national level Meets. He expressed his best wishes for the overall success of the meet.

Dr. P. Tamilvanan, Chairman, NMPT, in his presidential address reiterated NMPT's commitment in encouraging sports and games. He has also assured to include more items in the major ports tournaments in the coming years so that more talents get due recognition. H C Venkatesh, Secretary, MPSCB also addressed the gathering.

The inaugural match was played between NMPT and Tuticorin wherein NMPT won the match. The Deputy Chairman of NMPT who played doubles veteran won the match.

Teams from 9 major ports of Kandla, JNPT, Mumbai, Goa, Cochin, Chennai, Tuticorin, Vishakhapatnam and host Port - New Mangalore Port are participating In this Tournament in various categories like mens open- singles and doubles, veterans, children, etc. Players who had represented National/State level are expected to display a spectacular event to the badminton lovers of Mangalore

The matches will be conducted simultaneously at the NMPT Gymkhana and U.S. Mallya Indoor Stadium (Mangala stadium) for three days.

Belagavi, Mar 7: Karnataka Urban Development Minister B A Basavaraj on Saturday said that government would a take decision very soon regarding conducting city corporations election in the state.

Speaking with the media after review meeting at Belagavi city corporation (BCC) here he further said that delimitation exercise of the wards has to be done followed by reservations.

The minister stated that discussions would be held with Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa and would arrive at a decision to conduct the election in about a month’s time.

Bengaluru, Jan 9: Primary and Secondary Education Minister S Suresh Kumar on Thursday said that the Education Department would launch a helpline by March 2020 to address the complaints.

Speaking to reporters here, he said, the helpline is not only for children but also for teachers.

"Entire department including teachers and parents can make use of the opportunity”, the minister said.

“The helpline can be called for any complaint related to the Education Department. Our objective is to resolve problems within a stipulated time,” the Minister said.

Chikkamagaluru, Jun 13: Deputy Commissioner Dr Bagadi Gautham said that movement of heavy vehicles has been banned from Tanikodi to S K Border on NH 169 (Mangaluru to Solapur) from June 15 to August 15.

In an official statement issued here on Friday evening, he said that due to heavy rain lashing in the District the minor bridges on the stretch at Umbalagere, Goravanahalli and Gulaganji are in a dilapidated condition. As a precautionary measure, the movement of heavy vehicles has been banned.

As an alternative, all the vehicles (below 15 tonnes) from Chikmagalur can travel via Baliho Nur-Magundi-Kalasa-Kudremukh-SK Border. The vehicles from NR Pura (below 15 tonnes) should travel via Koppa-Hariharapura-Bidaragodu-Agumbe.
