Student given a warm felicitation for winning laurel at national level athletics meet

Mangalore, February 1: Sidharth Puthran, who won medal at national level sports meet recently, was on Wednesday given a warm felicitation at Rosario High School in the city, where he is a Class X student.

The 15-year-old has won a bronze medal in the hammer throw at the national level athletic meet recently held at Ludhiana in the State of Punjab.

His throw of 51.37 m got him the medal and has brought glory to his school. The felicitation function was held at the Rosario cultural hall with full attendance of the school's pupils.

The headmaster of the school Aloysius D'Souza honoured the achiever, who was accompanied to the stage by his parents Shivananda Puthran and Savitha Puthran.

Speaking on the occasion Mr D'Souza said that when he joined the school as a teacher, he had a dream that they must achieve something special. “This little boy has contributed for the fulfilment of our dream, when the school has completed its 150 years of service in the field of education”, he said.

He said that continuous training by committed staff has made it possible for the school to achieve new heights at the national level.

He also said that Sidharth has a glorious future and he would bring more laurels in the days to come. He also thanked the physical education director Karyappa for his persistent efforts.

Sidharth's parents were seen smiling with joy and with a sense of gratification.

Prior to this Sidharth had won gold medals at the Taluk and District levels in discuss throw, hammer throw and shot put.

Along with Sidharth two other students - Rolson Periera who represented Karnataka at the athletic event and Anantha Prasad who also represented the state in the 200 and 400 m race –were also given felicitation.

Sidharth after receiving his laurel expressed his joy by saying, “I bow down to my teachers and parents and am proud to be a student of Rosario School.”

“My parents have continuously supported me in this endeavour and my sports teacher Karyappa has given the best training in my athletic event. The secret to success is hard work and encouragement from near and dear ones. I am grateful to this school as well,” he said.

The function began with a welcome address by Rita Pinto.

Mangalore, Mar 11: There everybody busy in hailing ‘Padmashree’ Harekala Hajabba. They wondered how an orange seller turned into an educationist with his grit and high objectives. However, the center of attraction- Harekala Hajabba was thinking how to transfer a cheque of rupees one lakh to a current account of his school!

Dakshina Kannada District Kannada and Culture Department had an interaction program with Harekala Hajabba at Ravindra Kalabhavana of University College Mangaluru on Wednesday. The department, as well as Dakshina Kannada District Bus Owners’ Association felicitated the achiever. They also honored Hajabba with a cash of rupees one lakh. Instantly, the man decided to utilize the amount for his school! 

In his address, Guruvappa N T Balepuni, who introduced Harekala Hajabba to society opined that with his simplicity, humbleness, moreover his service without any expectation, Hajabba is being respected everywhere. Though he is an illiterate, three universities have made his life as lessons for students. “He has kept around Rs 50-55 lakh, including his award money for the development of school. January 25, the day on which ‘Padmashree’ award has been declared to Hajabba is a memorable day for me too,” he added. 

Dakshina Kannada District Bus Owners’ Association President Dinram Alva and former president Jayaram Shekha opined that there is lot to learn from Hajabba and he is a model for the society. Recalling his old- harsher days, Hajabba said, “Parents should make mind to save government schools. A literate can achieve anything, he can lead the society,” he said and called upon for the communal harmony. 

Presiding over the function, Principal Dr. Uday Kumar M A said that Harekala Hajabba is best example how a pure-hearted man achieves any height, simplicity can make someone so rich. In his welcome speech District Kannada and Culture Department Deputy director Rajesh G, depicted Hajabba as ‘modern time Mahatma Gandhi’. Economics PG Coordinator Dr. Jayavantha Nayak and M.Com Coordinator Dr. Abobakkar Siddiq were present on the occasion.

Udupi, Mar 2: The Kundapur police carried out raids at various clubs in Kundapur Sub-division limits and arrested around 50 persons involved in illegal gambling and seized Rs 2.5 lakhs from their possession, the police said on Monday.

According to the police, on Sunday night, based on credible information, the Kudapur Sub-division police led by ASP Hariram Shanker and team raided various clubs in Goliyangadi, Siddapur, Koteswar and Basrur where the accused were found gambling illegally.

All the clubs had taken court permission for recreation but were illegally indulging in gambling. They had also violated the court conditions and were involved in illegal gambling.

Mangaluru, Feb 5: The New Mangalore Port implemented the Centre's Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) by screening the crew of cargo ships and passengers of Cruise Vessel for the highly contagious and deadly disease Coronavirus.

Sources in the port said that screening was being carried out at the harbour since the past few days, as a precautionary measure. All the 1,800 passengers and 786 crew of Cruise Vessel 'Costa Victoria,' which stopped at the port, were screened.

Arrangements were also made for screening foreign nationals arriving at the Mangalore International Airport (MIA). 

Besides screening, passengers were also made aware of the Coronavirus and the precautionary steps to be taken.
