Udupi, February 3: The leaders of various Dalit organisations boycotted the Udupi taluk-level Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes grievances redress meeting here on Thursday.

“Although officers from 22 departments should have attended the meeting, only six had turned up for the meeting chaired by Udupi Tahsildar V. Prasanna,” DSS leader Ramesh Kotian told The Hindu .

“The Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC) Commissioner Gokuldas Nayak, Executive Officer of Udupi Taluk Panchayat and Block Education Officers of Udupi and Brahmavar, were prominent absentees. We had gone to the meeting with several questions to be posed to them,” he said.

Mr. Kotian said that there was corruption in the utilisation of funds allotted for the welfare of Dalits in all government departments and the Udupi CMC. None of the government officers were under the control of the Deputy Commissioner M.T. Reju.

The SC/ST grievances redress meeting was being held just for the namesake. “While the previous district in-charge Ministers held redress meetings with all seriousness, the incumbent district in-charge Minister V.S. Acharya is not showing any interest in holding such meetings,” Mr. Kotian said.

The DSS leaders had urged the district authorities to allow presspersons to attend the grievances redress meeting on Thursday.

But Mr. Prasanna did not give permission as per the instruction of the Deputy Commissioner.

Leaders of Dalit organisations such as Karunakar Master, Prashanth Thottam, Venkatesh Manipal, Vishwanath Petri, Sundar Kapettu, Krishnappa N., Rajesh Padubidri, and Vijaylakshmi were present at the meeting, Mr. Kotian said.

Mr. Prasanna said that only eight Dalit leaders attended the meeting. They wanted the presspersons to be allowed to the meeting. “But there is no Government circular in that respect.

There is no such tradition in any other districts. Officials of only four departments – education, health, police and agriculture — did not attend the meeting,” he said.

Udupi, Jun 28: The Padubidri police have booked cases against two patients of Novel Coronavirus for not revealing their primary contacts and hiding their travel history.

According to DHO Sudhirchandra Sooda, two siblings from Hejamadi in Padubidri had tested positive for COVID-19 recently. After shifting to the hospital, when the officials asked them about their primary contacts and travel history, the patients furnished false information.

When the officials collected information from various sources, they realised that the duo had travelled to Bantwal, Kasargod, Ullal and other places in Dakshina Kannada, said Dr Sooda. Hence, the district administration decided to file cases against them, he added.

Mangaluru: The police team investigating the case of bomb planting at the international airport here on January 20, took suspect Aditya Rao to several places in the city where he had frequented in the past few months, police said on Wednesday.

Police had earlier recovered a box from his bank locker at Udupi that contained a white powder which he claimed was cyanide. The substance has been sent to the Forensic Science laboratory for confirmation.

On further interrogation, Rao told police that he had a locker in a bank in Mangaluru also, where he was taken. Only some papers were seen in the locker, police said. He was also taken to the room where he stayed while he was working at a hotel in Balmatta here and to a hardware workshop from where he had purchased some spare parts, they said.

A 'live' explosive device was found in an unattended bag near a ticket counter of the departure gate of the airport here on January 20, triggering a scare before it was defused at a nearby open ground.

Police had released a picture of a man captured on CCTV camera as the suspect who placed the bomb and Rao later surrendered. Meanwhile, sources said the airport authorities got an anonymous call on Monday evening that a bomb had been planted in the airport. After thorough search, it was found to be a hoax. City police commissioner P S Harsha has warned of stringent action against those who make such calls.
