NABARD aid for endosulfan victims: MP

Kasargod, Feburary 5: The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has decided to sanction nearly Rs.100 crore to implement a special package for upgrading infrastructure in 11 endosulfan-hit panchayats in the district.

“The NABARD assistance of Rs.99.63 crore from its Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) constitutes 85 per cent of the approved projects at Rs.117.21 crore and the State will have to mobilise the remaining Rs.17.58 crore, which should be disbursed on or before February 19,” P. Karunakaran, MP, told a press conference here on Saturday.

He said NABARD's approval for the package, first phase of implementing development schemes in the affected localities, was on the basis of the projects submitted to NABARD and the amount was sanctioned after a special meeting with Prakash Bakshi, NABARD Chairman.

The projects were drawn up as per a master plan prepared under the supervision of Sub-Collector P. Balkiran.

The funds would be used for improving social infrastructure such as upgrading hospitals, setting up buds school, palliative care centres, and drinking water projects.

The projects were submitted in August last year by the MP. A panel comprising the district panchayat president, District Collector, Sub-Collector, representatives of local bodies, and senior district officials prepared the projects, Mr. Karunakaran said.

Mangaluru, Mar 8: A cruise ship with a Panama flag has been turned back at the New Mangalore Port here following the Centre's advisory in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, officials said.

The vessel 'MSC Lirica' was sent back on Saturday as the Union Ministry of Shipping had directed all ports not to allow any cruise ship from foreign destinations to call on Indian ports.

No further details about the ship were disclosed.

New Mangaluru Port Trust chairman A V Ramana said the ministry has directed all ports to deny entry to cruise ships till March 31 in the wake of the coronavirus scare.

Around 25 vessels were expected to call on the port here during the cruise season.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) conducted an awareness programme on prevention of coronavirus COVID-19 at Mangaluru International Airport.

The stakeholders were sensitised on handling passengers affected with covid-19 and precautions to be taken for dealing with affected passengers.

Bengaluru, Jul 15: Karnataka on Wednesday reported 3,176 new cases taking the total count of cases in the state to 47,253.

A total of 1,975 new cases were reported from the Bengaluru alone, the state's health department said.

The toll has gone up to 928 with 87 deaths reported today.

The total count of COVID-19 cases in the country is 9,36,181.

Bengaluru, Mar 6: At least 13 persons, including women and children, were killed and five critically wounded when an SUV collided with a car that had crashed against a road divider moments ago near Kunigal in Tumakuru district of Karnataka in the early hours of Friday, police said.

Of the victims, while 12 died on the spot, a child breathed his last in a hospital, they added.

The injured were admitted to the hospital, the police said.

Among the dead, 10 were from Tamil Nadu and three from Bengaluru. All of them were pilgrims who were on their way to Dharmasthala in Karnataka.

There were five women and two children among the dead, the police said.

"Thirteen persons have died. The incident occurred post midnight. A car crashed against the road divider and another car collided with it," Tumakuru Superintendent of Police (SP) K Vamsi Krishna said.

The police had to struggle to pull the bodies out from the mangled vehicles.

On learning about the incident, relatives of the victims rushed to the spot.
