MCA conducts inter-district chess tournament

Mangalore, February 6: Mangalore Chess Academy (MCA) in association with Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan under the auspices of South Kanara district Chess Association conducted inter-district Chess Tournament on Sunday at Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan, here.

The tournament attracted 48 players from South Kanara, Kasargod and Udupi districts, out of which 15 players were Fide rated. Prizes were distributed in Open and Age category in the evening.

Shabdik Varma of Mangalore Chess Academy scored 5.5 points out of 6 rounds and won the open category event. Vanessa D Souza became the runner up.

Tournament was packed with many strong players from the state, Shabdik played brilliantly without losing a single match, and he beat Vivekraj to clinch the championship trophy.

Open Category prize winners are: Shabdik Varma – 5.5, Andria D Souza – 5, Arjun Adappa – 5, Vivek Raj – 5, , Vishruth Sharm - 5

Age Category prize winners are as follows:

Under 15 Boys: Aditya Pai - 4.5, Hermon – 4

Under 15 Girls: Panchami Shenoy – 4, Shallone Pais - 3.5

Under 12 Boys: Anuttama – 4, Rajath Rao – 3

Under 12 Girls: Swathi Bhat – 4, Ashwija Bharanya - 3

Under 9 Boys: Shreedhar Sherlekar-3, Niranjan Rajeev -2

Under 9 Girls: Poorvi Adappa -2, Hitha K – 1

Under 7 Best: Shiva Chetana-2

Best Veteran: Krishnappa

Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 25: The government of Kerala under the leadership of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is all set to launch the 'Kerala Dialogue' -- a debate series on new concepts and development models during the COVID-19 pandemic.

A series of visionaries including noted political thinker Noam Chomsky and Nobel-laureate economist Amartya Sen will join this unique initiative that is to be rolled out from Friday.

The debate series to be inaugurated by the CM will feature prominent personalities from various walks of life including scientists, philosophers, diplomats, economists, writers, journalists, activists, technocrats and people's representatives.

The first episode will have Chomsky, Sen and WHO Chief Scientist Dr Soumya Swaminathan speaking on 'Kerala - Future Paths of Development'. 

State Planning Board vice chairman VK Ramachandran and senior journalist N Ram would be the moderators. The first episode would be telecast through the Chief Minister's official social media accounts.

The coming episodes in the series will also be telecast in the same manner. The government is of the view that the Kerala Dialogue series can ensure debates and dialogues on sustainable and inclusive development on the lines of the Kerala model.

Tumakuru, Jul 12: A four-year-old boy was killed by a leopard at Rajendrapur hamlet at Hasige Hobli village near Huliyurdurga in Kunigal taluk.

Police said on Sunday that this was the third such attack by big cats in the district in a span of six months.

Forest officials said that the boy had gone with his mother to wash clothes at a tank and the animal attacked him while playing there on Saturday late evening. 

A passerby who witnessed the incident scared the animal, it escaped leaving the boy’s body behind.

Mangaluru, Mar 22: A 22-year-old man from Bhatkal who had returned from Dubai on March 19 has tested positive for coronavirus.

Sindhu B Rupesh, Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada confrimed this today.

The youth, after landing at Mangaluru International Airport had got admitted to Govt Wenlock Hospital.

The total number of coronavirus positive patients in India rose to 342 on Sunday, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

A total of 16,999 samples from 16,109 individuals have been tested for COVID-19 as of 10:00 am on March 22, as per ICMR data.

India reported two deaths today from the highly contagious virus - one each in Maharashtra and Bihar - taking the tally to six, as per state authorities.
