Rally against communal attacks on Friday

Mangalore, February 9: Federation of Human Rights Organisations of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts will organise a massive rally followed by a public meet condemning the growing communal attacks in the State, on February 10 in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office.

Speaking to media persons, Karnataka Communal Harmony Forum District President B Suresh Bhat said that in the wake of communal violence incidents in the State including the clash in Uppinangady, Haleyangadi incident, the forum with like minded organisations will stage the rally and the public meet. The rally will start from Ambedkar Circle at 3 pm and will reach the Deputy Commissioner's office where a public meeting will be held.

Three books will be released at the public meet namely Kannada version of Justice M F Saldanha's enquiry report on Church attacks - “State Terrorism-Tyranny,” “Communal Violence Bill-Why it is a must?” (in Kannada) by G Rajashekar, Shivasunder and Fakir Mohammed Katpady and “Saffron Terrorism” (in Kannada) authored by B Suresh Bhat.

Bhat also informed that the Forum has written a letter to the Inspector General of Police (Western Range) and to the Police Superintendent seeking action against the culprits.

In the memorandum submitted to the SP, they have questioned the presence of RSS leader Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat at the inaugural function of the new office building of the Police Commissionerate.

Prabhakar Bhat of late grabbed the headlines for making hate speech against the minority community.

“The incident has only served to reinforce the widespread belief that there are different sets of rules for different people as far as twin districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi are concerned,” states the letter.

In the memorandum they have demanded the SP to file a case under IPC section 153B against Prabhakar Bhat.

A charge sheet should be filed against him after the through investigation of all his previous prejudicial activities and a non bailable warrant should be issued, demands the memorandum.

Suresh Bhat also said that in a letter they have submitted to the Governor, they have asked to take action against the saffronisation of text books and to expatriate Kalladka Bhat.

PFI, SDPI will be banned; party hopper MLAs who joined BJP will be awarded: K S Eshwarappa

Mysuru, Jan 19: Karnataka Rural Development and Panchyat Raj Minister K S Eshwarappa on Sunday claimed that Popular Front of India and Social Democratic Party of India have been indulging in anti-national activities.

Talking to media persons here, he said the government is mulling to ban and take action against PFI and its political arm SDPI.

It was recommended even during the previous government, but it was not taken seriously, he added.

He said that the BJP will ensure that all the MLAs who were instrumental in the party coming to power (the then-disqualified MLAs who joined BJP from Congress and JDS recently and won the bypoll subsequently) will not be let down and be given suitable posts in the government.

Karnataka approves quarantine in star hotels for asymptomatic international passengers on payment basis

Bengaluru, May 3: The Commissioner of Health and Family Welfare Services in the government of Karnataka KA Dayanand issued an order approving quarantine of asymptomatic COVID-19 infected international passengers on payment basis at star hotels.

The international passengers in the state have been categorised into A, B and C groups depending on their symptoms and co-morbid conditions. Category A passengers are symptomatic and are being sent to isolation hospitals which may be COVID care centres.

Category B and C passengers are asymptomatic and are being sent to institutional facilities like hostels, guest houses, hotels, etc.

"On the basis of demands by category B and C passengers to provide them star hotel accommodation on a self-payment basis, they have been granted the choice of staying in those hotels at their own cost. The BBMP Special Commissioner/Deputy Commissioner can have a meeting with such hotels and finalise the negotiated rate," Commissioner Dayanand said in the order.

"The hotels for category B passengers should have round the clock presence of health personnel while hotels for category C passengers should be visited by health staff once a day," he added.

Congress endorses HDK's demand for House Committee to probe Mangaluru violence

Bengaluru, Jan 10: Working President of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, Eashwar Khandre on Friday said that his party has extended its support to the demand made by the former chief minister of Karnataka, HD Kumaraswamy, that a House Committee should be formed to probe into Mangaluru violence.

Emphasising the need for a judicial probe into the incident, Khandre said, "Congress has always said that the truth should prevail and that there should be a judicial inquiry and investigation by a sitting Supreme Court judge or a High Court judge into the incident."

"We support his (HD Kumaraswamy) statement that a House Committee should be set up to probe into the incident of Mangaluru violence. Two innocent people lost their lives during the anti-CAA protest, it is very unfortunate," he added.

Two people were killed in Mangaluru in the alleged police firing after protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act turned violent on December 19.

The Act grants Indian citizenship to refugees from Hindu, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist and Parsi communities fleeing religious persecution from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh who entered India on or before 31, 2014.
