Mangalore, February 8: Dakshina Kannada District Police have nabbed three siblings, who strangled their relative to death at Thanneerupantha village of Punjalakatte in Belthangady taluk.

The accused have been identified as JM Abdul Azeez (24), his sisters Aseeda (20) and Asfana (19).

Addressing a news conference on Wednesday, Dakshina Kannada District Superintendent of Police Abhishek Goyal said that the trio had murdered Khateejamma (32), wife of Abbas of Alikemane.

The victim had gone missing on January 9, 2012 from her residence in Alikemane of Thannirpantha village in Belthangady taluk. Her husband Abbas had immediately filed a missing complaint with the Punjalakatte police. However, on January 31, 2012, police found a lead with a complaint from Ananda Gowda who complained that some local residents had sensed rotten smell in the forests of Kombaru when they had gone to get firewood. On searching the forest, the local residents had found a corpse in a highly decomposed state.

The police visited the spot and found that the body had been left in the forest about 20 days before January 31. The police suspected that the victim was killed by some miscreants and the dead body was left at Ammaithadka forest of Kombaru, between Gundya-Subramanya road and Puttur taluk to clear off the evidence.

Soon the Superintendent of Police formed three teams to investigate the matter. The DCIB team found that somebody had visited the victim's home in an Omni car on the day she went missing.

Tracing the car, the police found that it belonged to Azeez, brother of Apsana, victim's brother's wife. Though two robbery cases were filed against him by the Sullia Police, he has been avoiding the court procedures. It was learnt that Azeez who had been to Middle East had returned to India four months ago and had now no resources in hand to go back. This made the police suspicious.

On February 7, the police nabbed Azeez in Puttur near Patrao Circle and while questioning, Azeez confessed to have visited Khatijamma on January 9 along with his two sisters and killed her to gain gold and money from her. Azeez has been handed over to police custody while the two women are in judicial custody, informed the SP. The cops who nabbed Azeez have been rewarded with Rs 2,500 each.

Mangaluru, June 28: In his apparent bid to win the hearts of the people of Tulu Nadu while leaving this coastal city, Dr P S Harsha, the outgoing Mangaluru city police commissioner, today took to social media and thanked the people. The language he chose for his prolonged Facebook post and one paragraph tweet was Tulu.

“Loveable people of Kudla! I have received the transfer order after serving as the Commissioner of Police of Mangaluru City for 11 months. (During this period) I worked with utmost honesty and pro-people approach with the complete cooperation of my department. I wholeheartedly thank all those who supported me,” tweeted Dr Harsha, who is now posted in Bengaluru as the Deputy Inspector General and Commissioner of Information and Public Relations.

In his Facebook post, Dr Harsha claimed that thanks to his initiative “My Beat My Pride”, the policing in the coastal city has strengthened.

“My only intention was to put an end to rowdyism and illegal activities. I had given priority to curb the drug mafia. ‘My Beat My Pride’ became a successful initiative thanks to public support,” he said.

The IPS officer went on to claim that with the with the co-operation of the senior officers, the police department managed to efficiently handle situations during anti-CAA and pro-CAA agitations in the city, detection of explosives at Mangaluru International Airport and also during the covid-19 pandemic.

However, he did not mention about the death of two people in random police firing following a baton charge during anti-CAA protests in the city on December 19.

Tumakuru, Jan 2: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday slammed the Congress and its allies opposing the Citizenship Amendment Act, saying they are against giving relief to those who have been brutalised and victimised in Pakistan.

"Pakistan was founded on religious grounds due to which atrocities on minorities such as Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Christians have increased. But Congress and its allies don't speak against Pakistan," he said at a function here.

He also said the Congress and its allies take out rallies and stage demonstrations against the efforts to prevent atrocities on religious lines and save women from sexual assaults.

Modi wondered why those opposed to the CAA were not speaking out against Pakistan's atrocities and asked what stopped them from doing so.

Strongly defending the CAA, he said it was adopted by Parliament in a historic move, but that the Congress and its allies and the ecosystem created by his party's rival were now against the very institution.

He said India cannot leave the Hindus, Christians and Sikhs apparently fleeing Pakistan to "their fate" and added it was the country's responsibility to protect them.

Modi pointed out that the efforts are especially to protect the Dalits and tribals in Pakistan.

The Prime Minister also pointed out that the abrogation of Article 370 was a step towards ending terrorism and uncertainty in Jammu and Kashmir.
