Pravasi Sangham to go on fast against Mangalore air crash compensation row

Mangalore, February 11: Members of Pravasi Sangham, an organisation for overseas affairs and returnees based in Kerala, have decided to hold a day-long hunger strike against the discrepancies in disbursing compensation to kin of Mangalore air crash victims.

The protest will be held on February 15 from 10 am to 4 pm in front of Air India Office in the city, announced P K Abdullah, Vice President of the organization at a press meet here on Saturday.

The hunger strike will be given a start by E P Jayarajan, MLA (CPI (M) central committee member). K V Abdul Khader, MLA, general secretary, Kerala Pravasi Sangham Central Committee, K Kunhiraman, MLA, among others will take part. As many as 200 volunteers go on fast, he said.

Recalling the worst ever aviation disaster of the Mangalore, he said that one and a half year old plane crash that resulted in death of 158 innocent passengers, led thousand of their dependents as helpless denizens and the relief of benefit that the dependents had to get lawfully from the insurance authorities of Air India has not yet assessed properly as per the relevant provisions of Insurance Act.

“There are umpteen such examples which would prove the discrimination of authorities against the victims and their dependents in the aforesaid plane crash”, he said.

Reiterating demand for equal compensation for the kin of all the victims as per the Montreal Convention, he said in the plane crash at Lebanon 103 victims were compensated by the authorities by paying a fair amount of Rs 1, 269 crore rupees.

He said though it was already declared by the law that every heir of the plain crash victims should get a minimum of Rs 75 lakh compensation, the Central Government and Air India are bargaining with hapless dependents to reduce compensation amount and harassing them.

Mr. Abdulla also complained that Air India and Reliance Insurance Company are troubling all dependents even after so many months.

District treasurer Basheer Kallingal, Joint Secretary KV Ganesh, M. Haneef and VV Krishnan, Abdul Khader were present at the press meet.

Mangaluru, Feb 10: Life of a 40–year-old man, who suffered a massive cardiac arrest, was saved by an ambulance driver who covered 80-km distance between Dharmasthala and Mangaluru in just 40 minutes.

The patient, a Chikkaballapur native sustained a heart attack near Sakleshpur on Saturday while he was on his way to Dharmasthala. He was provided preliminary treatment at a private hospital in Ujire, where doctors advised his relatives to shift him to a hospital in Mangaluru immediately.

The patient’s condition was critical and the odds were completely against him. Moreover owing to the ongoing double lane project work, the road too had been dugout. Despite all this, ambulance driver Hameed drove at a fast pace and managed to take the patient to the hospital within 40 minutes.

Mangaluru, Feb 16: A 45 year-old man committed suicide by jumping into Netravati River from the bridge near Thokkottu along with his six-year-old son in the early hours of Sunday here, police said.

The deceased have been identified as Gopalkrishna Rai and his son Aneesh Rai, residents of Baltila in Bantwal.

According to the police, Gopalkrishna along with his wife Ashwini Rai and son had come to Konaje for a family programme. At about 4:30 a.m. he came to the bridge with his son, left a suicide note and jumped into the river.

Bengaluru, May 22: Karnataka Congress delegation met Chief Election Commissioner, Dr B Basavaraju in Bengaluru, urging him to guide Karnataka Government to conduct local body elections and not to allow State government to nominate their party men to the local bodies.

The delegation was led by Congress leader Siddaramaiah and Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president D K Shivakumar.

"They (State government) wants to postpone the election, they have a lot of other provisions. We are demanding to protect the law, the government doesn't have the power to interfere in the system. We will not allow the state government to nominate their party men.

The CM and his entire team is responsible for this, they are killing the democracy and Panchayati Raj system of the State," said Shivakumar while speaking to the reporters.

The local body elections were scheduled to take place in the month of March or April, which were postponed in view of the COVID-19 crisis.

However, the date for conducting the local body elections has not been decided yet.
