Mangalore, February 11: The post centenary silver jubilee celebrations of Mangalore Diocese began with pomp and gaiety at the Rosario Cathedral Grounds here on Saturday, with religious and political leaders hailing the 125 years of unparalleled service.

The historic evening began with the holy prayers at the Rosario Cathedral Grounds here in the presence of Savio Hon Tai-Fai, the Secretary, Congregation for Evangelisation of Peoples Vatican, Rome.

Speaking on the occasion Higher Education Minister lauded the service rendered by the Mangalore Diocese in the field of education, medicine and social service. “The work of this Diocese is of National standard”, he said.

He promised that various activities of the churches would surely be recognised by the government.

“The State Government is proposing to earmark Rs 50 crore as Christian Development Fund that can be used for various development activities. Out of this Rs 5 crore can go for the construction of Church related buildings. Another Rs 5 crore for building homes for the poor. More than 35 crores can go for other Church related charities” he said

In his welcome address the Bishop said that the Diocese had taken a pledge that after 100 years there would be a congregation of religious leaders and that wish has come true today. “I feel a sense of gratitude and fulfilment today. The past struggles of our fore fathers have culminated in this celebration and this jubilee is a proof of the faith of the people in the Jesus”, he said.

“The Mangalore Diocese has grown leaps and bounds and we are involved today in medical, educational, social and spiritual services of humanity”, he added.

On the occasion, Sisters who have served humanity in various aspects of life were felicitated. Amongst them were Agatha Mary, Gilbert, Jyothi BS , Dorine D Souza, Erslty Almeida and Eugene D Souza.

Rajya Sabha MP Oscar Fernandes in his address said, “If one church has to exist many people have to shed their sweat and that is being proved today.

He also praised the Christian missionaries for their 'selfless service in educating millions'.

“Mangalore Diocese has shown that it can serve humanity beyond one's imagination. Aloysius College was one of the first colleges in the city and Father Muller Hospital had begun treating leprosy patients at a time when there was no care for the leprosy patients. Today the institution stands tall and Christian priests and Fathers are wholly responsible for the progress,” he said.

The Archbishop of Bangalore Most Rev Dr Bernard Moras also addressed the gathering.

On the same occasion individuals who have completed 100 years were felicitated. Couples who have completed 75 years of marriage also were felicitated.

Chennai, Jul 25: Two weeks after a 62-year-old widow accused him of harassment, including urinating outside her house, the Chennai Police on Saturday registered an FIR against ABVP national president Dr Subbiah Shanmugam.

Dr Shanmugam, Professor and HOD, Department of Surgical Oncology, Kilpauk Medical College and Government Royapettah Hospital, has been booked under sections 271 (disobedience to quarantine rule) and 427 (mischief causing damage) under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Tamil Nadu Women Harassment Prevention Act.

The FIR was lodged exactly two weeks after the woman’s relative Balaji Vijayaraghavan filed a complaint with the Adambakkam police accusing Dr Shanmugam of harassing his aunt, who is living alone in her apartment following her husband’s death last year, following an argument over a parking slot.

The action came after Vijayaraghavan alleged that the police were not filing an FIR due to the ABVP functionary’s “political connections.”

Dr Shanmugam and the woman were living in the same apartment complex in Nanganallur and an argument broke between them over a parking slot.

“He wanted to use our parking lot. We agreed but demanded a nominal charge for using it. He was outraged by our demand and even broke our signboard at the parking lot,” Vijayaraghavan wrote in his complaint.

He also alleged that Dr Shanmugam began harassing her by throwing “pieces of chicken” outside her apartment despite knowing she is a vegetarian.

CCTV footage corroborates with the allegations of urinating outside the residence of the widow. However, the ABVP called the incident as a “malicious and derogatory propaganda” by the Congress’ student wing of NSUI.

"The video shared by NSUI with an allegation of harassment is tampered with and is being used with malafide intentions. The two families have discussed this within their housing society and have already concluded that the harassment allegations were caused due to misunderstandings and are untrue,” ABVP National General secretary Nidhi Tripathi said.

Vijayaraghavan also alleged in his two-page written complaint that the ABVP national president had urinated outside the woman’s apartment gate and had been throwing garbage and used masks at her gate.

In his complaint, Vijayaraghavan also said the family was “concerned about her safety” while asking police to take action against Dr Shanmugam, who he says, “has a bad track record in maintaining rapport with neighbours.”

Bengaluru, Aug 4: As the stage is set for the ground-breaking ceremony for Ram temple construction at Ayodhya on Wednesday, retired Supreme Court judge N Santosh Hegde has called for the promotion of religious harmony and peaceful coexistence and respect for different faiths.

"It is a good idea to make that as an object of the temple so that there can be peace in the world," the former Solicitor General of India said when asked if the temple should be promoted as a symbol of national integration, and social and communal harmony.

Hegde said one of the most dangerous things for conflict today is religion. "In that background, there should be some effort from somebody or other to bring about peaceful coexistence, respecting each religion," the former Karnataka Lokayukta told PTI on Tuesday. "It is a good idea to start Bhumi Pujan as an indicator of that or foundation for developing harmony among various religions," he added.

The Supreme Court had in November last year paved the way for the construction of a Ram temple by a Trust at the disputed site of the Babri Masjid's demolition in Ayodhya. It also directed the Centre to allot an alternative 5- acre plot to the Sunni Waqf Board for building a new mosque at a "prominent" place in the holy town in Uttar Pradesh. The Uttar Pradesh government has allotted a five-acre land in Dhannipur village in Sohaval Tehsil of Ayodhya for the mosque's construction.
