Mangalore, February 13: Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda hinted at declaring a holiday if a day was fixed as the birthday of Veerarani Abbakka and the event would be celebrated at the State level.

He was speaking at the valedictory of Veerarani Abbakka Utsava-2012 at Rani Abbakka Vedike at Ucchila Bovi School Ground in Someshwara on Sunday. Commenting on the way the programme is being organised over the years, the Chief Minister said that as Abbakka Utsava has reached the ninth year, a few changes should be introduced and step should be taken while organising the Utsava in the future.

“As the programme is organised in the name of Rani Abbakka who was synonym for courage, the programme will be true to its name if women take a lead and organise the programme.

Women should come forward and take up the complete responsibility and organise the programme,” he said and asked the present organising committee office-bearers to support women to organise the Utsava in future.

Responding to the memorandum submitted by the office-bearers of Veerarani Abbakka Utsava Committee, the Chief Minister promised that he would do his best to meet their demands within the limitations. “Let a delegation approach me in the office and we will discuss the matter,” he said.

Lauding Abbakka for her courage and determination, he said the youth should learn lessons of patriotism from the life of Abbakka and get inspired from her to serve the nation.

The CM conferred Veerarani Abbakka award to littérateur Lalitha Rai and and Veerarani Abbakka Puraskara to theatre artiste Jayasheela on the occasion.

In a memorandum submitted by the Committee to the CM, they have urged to name Mangalore International Airport after Abbakka. The memorandum also urged to sanction Rs one crore in the budget for organising the 10th year of Rani Abbakka Utsava next year.

Other demands include Rs six crore for construting Veeerarani Abbakka memorial in Ullal, naming one of the main circles in Mangalore city as Rani Abbakka Circle, inclusion of life of Abbakka in the text books at the school level and others.

Bengaluru, May 26: Ministers of the central government or state governments or officers on their official duty, who are travelling across states, will be exempted from requirements of quarantine, the Karnataka government said on Monday.

The state government issued an addendum to Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for inter-state passengers.

"Any person who gets a negative COVID test certificate (from ICMR approved lab) which is not more than two days old from the date of journey will be exempted from the requirement of institutional quarantine," read the addendum.

The state government has laid down new norms for those coming from other states (including those coming by domestic air flights).

Passengers coming from 'high prevalence states' (Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh) would be required to undergo a seven-day "institutional quarantine", which will be followed by home quarantine.

The new norms also said that home quarantine of 14 days would be necessary for the passengers coming from other states.

Bengaluru: Karnataka chief minister BS Yediyurappa on Tuesday shuffled the portfolios of six newly inducted ministers after they expressed unhappiness about the departments allocated to them barely 24 hours ago.

Three ministers — BC Patil, Anand Singh and K Gopalaiah — received new responsibilities and as many — Shivaram Hebbar, Srimanth Patil and Byrathi Basavaraj — have been saddled with more.

Sources said the six ministers met the CM late Monday night and said they were not happy with the portfolios handed to them. They reportedly threatened not to assume office until their demands were met, forcing the CM to effect the changes early Tuesday.

BC Patil is now vested with agriculture (he had been given forest), Anand Singh forest, environment and ecology (earlier food and civil supplies) and Gopalaiah food and civil supplies (instead of small-scale industries). BC Patil said, “I’m happy I can now be with farmers.” Shivaram Hebbar has been given the additional responsibility of sugar along with labour allocated to him on Monday.

Allocation of the forest portfolio to Anand Singh has raised eyebrows as the Vijayanagara MLA had been arrested in 2013 and 2015 in cases of illegal mining and illegal transportation of mining ore. Singh owned SB Mineral in Ballari and the Lokayukta had charged him with transporting 17,086 tonnes of iron ore without permission or valid licence. He was acquitted in a Belikeri iron ore export case due to lack of evidence.

Byrathi Basvaraj, who has been given the urban development ministry, will also handle Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board and Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation.

Srimanth Patil has received minority welfare department apart from textile.

The exercise of portfolio shuffling is likely to continue with minister K Sudhakar reportedly unhappy with medical education.

In another embarrassment to the CM, Mahesh Kumathalli on Tuesday refused to take over as chairman of the Mysore Sales International Ltd, saying he wants to be a minister. BJP MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal urged Yediyurappa to induct Kumathalli into the cabinet in line with the promise made to him when he joined the BJP before bypolls. “The CM must keep his word,” he said.
