Yenepoya varsity to host Int'l CME on 'Inter Professional Education in Clinical Ethics' on Feb 18

Mangalore, February 13: Second Indo-German International CME on 'Inter Professional Education in Clinical Ethics' will be hosted by Centre for Ethics of Yenepoya University, Deralakatte, Mangalore on February 18 at the Indoor auditorium in its campus.

Announcing this at a press meet here on Monday Dr. Vina Vaswani, Director, Centre for Ethics said that the University has innovatively established a Centre for Ethics recognizing the need to bring all health care professionals updated with the changes that have taken place in Medical Ethics and to fill the gap in health professional's education.

She said Norbert W Paul, director, department of history, philosophy and ethics in medicine of Johannes Gutenberg University, Germany will deliver talk on the theme.

Students from the Medical, Dental, Nursing, Pharmacy and Physiotherapy colleges in and around Mangalore will be participating in the CME.

Mr. Farhaad Yenepoya, Director, Research and Finance, will be the Chief Guest and Dr. DP Chandramohan, vice Chancellor, Yenepoya University will preside over the function.

Dr Vaswani said that Centre of Ethics is committed in bringing about reawakening of ethics in the health care system. The Centre runs two unique academic programmes not offered anywhere in the country. Post Graduate Diploma in Bioethics and Medical Ethics (PGDBEME) and Certificate course in Clinical Ethics Consultation (CCCEC).

Clinical Ethics Consultation is a very new concept not formally practiced anywhere in India. To meaningfully train health care professionals in performing Clinical Ethics Consultation, Yenepoya University has taken a visionary step collaborating with the Institute for History, Philosophy and Ethics in Medicine, Johannes Gutenberg Medical University, Mainz, Germany; and is jointly running the CCCED Programme.

Active Rotarian and Ex Secretary of the Rotary Club of Mainz, Dr. Norbert Paul will be delivering a Guest Lecture at the Rotary Club of Mangalore North on February 14, Tuesday. He will also be addressing the members of the Ethics Committees of all Medical Colleges in Mangalore on February 16, Thursday. It is hoped to bring about better coordination and understanding among the ethics committees of different colleges and also independent ethics committees of Mangalore.

Dr. Norbert W Paul was also present in the press meet.

Mangaluru: 10-yr-old boy drowns in Kadri temple pond

Mangaluru, Jan 7: A ten-year-old boy who suffered severe injuries after drowning in Kadri temple pond died on Monday,

Police said that the deceased has been identified as Sandesh, resident of Athani taluk.

Sandesh drowned while taking a dip in a pond at Kadri Shree Manjunatha Temple on Sunday evening. He was immediately rushed to the hospital in the city, however, he died on Monday morning after he stopped responding to the treatment.

Karnataka govt mulls ban on cow slaughter, beef consumption

Bengaluru, Jul 11: The Bharatiya Janata Party led government of Karnataka is planning to ban cow slaughter as well as the sale and consumption of beef in the state by bringing Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Preservation Bill, 2012.

"Many states have passed the Anti-Cow Slaughter Bill. We are preparing to implement it in Karnataka as well. The state government will soon implement a ban on cow slaughter, sale and consumption of beef on the lines of many other states," said Prabhu Chauhan, the state's Animal Husbandry Minister.

The Anti-Cow Slaughter Act is already in place in several states like Gujarat, Delhi, Haryana, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh among others.

Last month, the Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government passed a draft ordinance to prevent cow slaughter, providing maximum rigorous imprisonment of 10 years and a fine up to Rs 5 lakh.
The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet Cow Slaughter Prevention (Amendment) Ordinance, 2020 aims at making the existing Uttar Pradesh Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act, 1955 more effective towards cow safety.

In Karnataka, the BJP-led government had promised to ban cow slaughter in its manifesto for 2018 state assembly election.

"The government will form a team of experts to look into once the current pandemic situation eases," Chauhan stated, adding that if necessary, the team of experts will visit states like Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat.

The then BS Yediyurappa-led BJP government had passed the Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Protection Bill in 2010 but it failed to get presidential approval. Three years later, the Bill was withdrawn by the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government.

"I will discuss this matter with Chief Minister and if this pandemic situation eases, by next session, if not by upcoming assembly session, we will try to bring Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Bill," Chauhan added.

Don’t show any hurry to reopen schools: Siddaramaiah to Karnataka govt

Bengaluru, Jun 4: Leader of Opposition in Karnataka Siddaramaiah on Thursday said it was not appropriate to reopen schools for two more months, given the current rate at which coronavirus infection is spreading.

He also advised Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa and Primary and Secondary Education Minister Suresh Kumar not to take any hasty decisions in this regard.

"As corona infection is spreading in the state beyond limits, it is not appropriate to open schools for at least two more months. Chief Minister and Suresh Kumar should not make any hasty decisions," Siddaramaiah tweeted.

Stating that Suresh Kumar has placed a proposal to reopen schools in July, he said the chief minister has to take note of worried parents opposing this proposal.

"There are reports about students getting infected by coronavirus after reopening of schools in countries like Britain, France and Italy. It is appropriate to think about reopening schools on analysing the situation after two months," he said in another tweet.

The state government has sought an opinion from parents and stakeholders regarding reopening of schools in the state, with the easing of the COVID-19 lockdown norms.

Amidst worries and concerns expressed by parents across the state, the Education Minister on Wednesday had assured that the government would not take any hasty decisions regarding reopening of schools.

The Union government, in its recent guidelines, had asked state governments to hold consultation at school, college, training and coaching institutions-level with parents and other stakeholders, and based on the feedback, a decision on reopening them would be taken.
