Udupi, February 14: Expressing shock over the unexpected demise of veteran politician Dr VS Acharya, Pejawar Mutt pontiff Vishwesha Theertha Swamiji said that Karnataka has lost a great statesman forever.

“He was a thinker par excellence, known for his progressive thoughts on economical and industrialization.He had led a political life without any black spots and was revered even by his political opponents in other parties”, Swamiji said.

“Moreover, he was one of my intimate associates and adviser”, he added.

Condoning the death of Acharya Udupi Block Congress Committee President Pramod Madhwaraj said he had no enemies even in the opposition. He lauded the efforts taken by Acharya in the development of the district and the state.

Former Udupi CMC President Gujjadi Prabhakar Nayak said that Dr Acharya always used to think of development and nothing else than development. Though he was not keeping well in the recent days he continued to be in active politics, participating in all the functions and programmes, to please his friends and partymen.

Udupi District JD(S) President Deviprasad Shetty in his condolence message said that Dr Acharya, since the days of Jana Sangha had brought many people like him (Deviprasad) to active politics. He was one of the rare politicians who led a transparent life. He had a genuine commitment towards development.

Bengaluru, Mar 4: A total of five people suspected of being infected with Coronavirus have been admitted to the isolation wards of Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases in Bengaluru.

Samples of these patients have been collected and their reports are likely to be received later today.

Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa has assured people in state about preparedness to tackle Coronavirus.

Earlier in the day, Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan had said that there were 28 cases of Coronavirus in the country and added that universal screening of all international flights will begin to control the spread of the deadly virus.

Global deaths due to Coronavirus outbreak have risen above 3,000.

Bengaluru, Jul 22: Congress MLA Priyank Kharge has questioned the Karnataka government on the alleged breakdown of oxygen in the intensive care unit (ICU) at ESIC hospital in Kalaburagi, saying he had got complaints that eight persons who were on ventilators had died.

He asked the government if it is "deliberately" hiding something about the patients that were admitted in ESIC.

"I have got complaints that eight people who were on ventilators are dead in ESIC Kalaburagi because there was oxygen breakdown in ICU. ESIC has not been admitting patients as the issue has not been resolved. Nobody is confirming or denying it. Is the Government deliberately hiding something?" he asked.
Kharge also accused the government of not having adequate facilities to combat COVID-19 in different parts of the state.

"I hope I am wrong, but if it is a fact, this ascertains that the administration has lost control over Corona pandemic in the district. No addition testing centre. No beds are available. PPE Kits and medical waste is thrown in Gulbarga Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS)," he added.

According to the Union Health Ministry, there are 67420 COVID-19 cases in the state.

Bengaluru, Jan 16: Former chief minister Siddaramaiah and other leaders are likely to make the final decision on the name of the next Congress president of Karnataka soon, said party leader Dinesh Gundu Rao on Thursday.

"He (Siddaramaiah) has met all the leaders and I think soon they will make a decision. It has already been delayed, it should not have been delayed so much. I am sure high command will take a decision on this," Rao told reporters here.

Both Siddaramaiah and Gundu Rao had resigned from their posts, Leader of Congress Legislature Party and KPCC president, after the party's drubbing in the bye-elections held for 15 Assembly seats last year.
