National Flag was hoisted at half mast to mourn the death of minister Dr VS Acharya at Vidhana Soudha in Bangalore on Tuesday

In Delhi, External Affairs Minister S M Krishna recalled that during his tenure as Chief Minister, the treasury benches used to listen to Acharya's suggestions seriously during house proceedings.

BJP leader L K Advani, in his condolence message, said Acharya played an important role in Jan Sangh capturing power in Udupi municipal elections in 1960s.

"Udupi was the place where Jan Sangh registered its first victory in any municipal election in South India. Acharya played a very important role in it," he said.

What was remarkable was that for many years, Udipi municipality was acknowledged as the best-run civic body in Karnataka, he said.

BJP General Secretary Ananth Kumar said Acharya was not only an inspiration for the party, but also for the state."He has done yoeman service for Udupi's development," he said.

State Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Jagadish Shettar said Acharya was an honest politician and a committed party worker."His contribution towards development of Udupi is immense. He was one of the architects of building BJP in the state," he said.

Home Minister R Ashok said Acharya was a unique leader and had friends cutting across party lines. "His contribution to build BJP in the state is unforgettable," he said.

Opposition Leader in Assembly Siddaramaiah said his friendship with Acharya spanned 30 years. "He was a gentle politician and rendered yoeman service to the state in his capacity as minister and legislator," he said.

In his condolence message, BJP President Nitin Gadkari expressed profound grief and sorrow on Acharya's demise.

"With the departure of V S Acharya, the BJP has lost a stalwart in Karnataka. It is a personal loss to me as well," Gadkari said in his message.

Acharya was instrumental in the then Jan Sangh's victory in 1968 of Udupi municipal council which had laid foundation for BJP rule in the South, he said added.

Advani and Ananth Kumar will be attending Acharya's funeral to be held tomorrow at Udipi. Kumar said Acharya's body is being taken from Bangalore to Udipi.

"Acharya was known for his honesty and integrity. His death is a big loss to the party. We offer our condolences," Kumar said.

Mumbai, May 13: Members of the Muslim community helped in performing the last rites of their 72-year-old Hindu neighbour in Sewri area here after the deceased's relatives could not reach for his funeral due to the lockdown.

Pandurang Ubale, who was paralysed since the last few months, died at his residence in Zakaria Bunder area of Sewri on Monday. He had been staying there along with his wife and son since some decades.

After his death on Monday, his relatives staying in suburban Mulund, Belapur in adjoining Navi Mumbai and Alibaug in neighbouring Raigad district could not come over to his place in the wake of the coronavirus-induced lockdown.

As Ubale's wife and son were unable to make all arrangements for the funeral, they informed their neighbours, who came forward to help and even prepared the bier.

A neighbour, Asif Sheikh, who attended the funeral, said, We knew Ubale uncle since a long time. He always participated in our festivals and we used to be a part of their festivities. We all came forward to bid him a farewell and helped in performing his last rites."

Last month also, some Muslim men carried the body of a Hindu neighbour in suburban Bandra on their shoulders to the cremation ground after the deceased's relatives were unable to attend the last rites due to the lockdown.

Madikeri, Feb 23: Back-to-back floods and landslides in the last two years, has led to a fall in the number of tourists coming to the coffee-growing region of Kodagu, forcing the district administration to intervene and take confidence-building measures, telling tourists that Kodagu was safe to visit.

According to the statistics of the Karnataka State Tourism Department, Kodagu recorded a moderately good number of tourists in 2018 and 2019, the years that the district witnessed devastating floods and landslides.

The Department’s statistics reveal that 17 lakh tourists visited Kodagu in 2018 and 18 lakh in 2019. This means the flood-ravaged years did attract tourists contrary to what the stakeholders had claimed.

Patna, Mar 31: In arguably the first of its kind incident in the country, a young man in Bihar was beaten to death precisely because he had informed the district control room about two corona suspects who had arrived here in the State from Mumbai.

The incident took place in Sitamarhi in North Bihar where a 20-year-old youth Bablu Kumar was allegedly killed by Sudhir Mahto and Munna Mahto.

The two Mahtos had arrived from Mumbai to Sitamarhi around ten days back. Bablu, in the meantime, informed the district control room about the arrival of two persons from a State where a large number of people were afflicted with coronavirus.

A team of doctors on March 24 reached Runnisaidpur in Sitamarhi to examine the two suspects. Three days later, these two persons from Maharashtra tested negative.

But the incident (of informing control room and subsequent medial test) created such enmity between the family of Mahtos and Babloo that on Sunday when they found the 20-year-old young man sitting alone, they thrashed him so mercilessly that he died on the spot.

Shocked and grief-struck, Babloo’s father Vinod Singh eventually lodged an FIR with the police and named Sudhir Mahto, Munna Mahto, and their family members as accused in the killing of his son.

The police on Monday raided the place and arrested the Mahtos.

But then, this is not an isolated case of violence. In another incident that took place in Bihar’s Jehanabad district, a BDO Ajay Kumar and a police officer Chandrashekhar Kumar were attacked by fellow villagers when the officials reached there to quarantine those migrants who had reached there from Delhi. So angry were the villagers with the officials’ move to isolate the migrants that they smashed the window-panes of the government vehicles and attacked the officials.

The officials had to beat a hasty retreat. But they soon returned with additional police team which used brutal force and took local leaders into custody before restoring normalcy in the area.
