Sandesha Awards-2012' announced; Indhudhara Honnapura, Peter Lewis among 10 recipients

Mangalore, February 16: Kannada journalist Indhudhara Honnapura and renowned artist Peter Lewis are among the ten individuals who have been selected for the 'Sandesha Awards 2012' conferred by Sandesha Foundation for Culture and Education.

The award ceremony will he held on February 26, under the auspices of the Karnataka Catholic Bishop's Council, announced Fr. Valerian Mendonca, Director of the Foundation at a press meet here on Thursday.

He said Rev. Dr. Aloysius Paul D'Souza, Bishop of Mangalore would preside over the function and Vaidehi, noted writer would be the chief guest. Also Rev. Dr. Henry D'Souza, Bishop of Bellary and Chairman, Sandesha Foundation will grace the occasion.

Fr. Mendonca said that ten different awards would be conferred on the occasion and each award carries a cash prize of 10, 000 rupees, a citation, a shawl and a trophy.

Dr. Na D'Souza Selection committee President announced the list of awardees.

Sandesha Kannada Literature Award will be conferred on Dr. KV Tirumalesh, A prolific writer in Kannada; his 30 works comprise poetry, short stories, novels, reviews, columns and linguistics.

Sandesha Konkani Literature Award will be conferred on M Madhava Pai, a great name in the Konkani translation field. He has contributed 750 pages 'Kannada-Konkani Dictionary'-a great service to Konkani Language.

Sandesha Literature Award goes to Catherine Rodrigues, who has written 57 Tulu dramas in her 30 years of Tulu Literature career. She is a ten time winner of the Late Dharmastala Ratnavarma Heggade Tulu Drama Writing Competition.

Sandesha Cinema Award will be conferred on Geethapriya (Laxman Rao Mohite), a great star in the cinema world, a song writer, story-writer, dialogue-writer as well as a great film director.

Sandesha Arts Award will be given to Peter Lewis, an artist of international fame, who got international recognition for his art exhibition at Texas in USA.

Sandesha Journalism Award will be conferred on Indhudhara Honnapura, editor of the monthly 'Honnapura Samvada'.

Sandesha Media Education Award will be given to Shree Padre hailing from Kasargodu, a well-known as an agriculturist. Rain-harvesting has been one of his creative contributions.

Sandesha Best Teacher Award goes to Rev. Sr. Maria Jyothi, AC, a pioneer in the education of the specially-abled children in Mangalore, Founder Principal of St. Agnes Special School.

Sandesha Konkani Music Award will be conferred on Late Sri Jerome D'Souza, who has composed more than 1000 songs in Konkani, brought out 14 music albums and published 2 anthologies called 'Amchim Podam'.

Sandesha Special Recognition Award will be given to John D'Silva journeying from Kerala to Mumbai; he has been a crusader of cooperative banking, an educationist and a philanthropist.

Mangaluru, Jul 21: Private hospitals cannot send back COVID-19 patients for any reason, district in-charge minister Kota Srinivas Poojary said on Monday.

The Minister was addressing a meeting at the Father Muller Medical College here on the arrangements made for COVID-19 patients.

Dakshina Kannada district is quite advanced in the medical field. Hence, the government will not tolerate COVID-19 patients wandering from one hospital to another for treatment. Refusing to admit COVID-19 patients in hospitals is unacceptable, he warned.

Bengaluru, Jun 12: The Central government has identified Karnataka's Udupi and Yadgir among the "emerging districts of concern" for COVID-19 in the country. Confirming the development, a top official of the state health department said, "they (centre) had reviewed these two districts a few days back...there was a sudden spurt of cases due to Maharashtra returnees turning positive." Sources said union cabinet secretary Rajiv Gauba, during a recent video conference with state chief secretaries and health secretaries, had shared his thoughts on the issue.

According to the information shared, districts with more than 400 cases, half of which was reported post-May 18 lockdown relaxation, have been identified as "emerging districts of concern." They are concentrated in the seven states/union territories of Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Karnataka, Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana. "Udupi and Yadgir from Karnataka, along with Gurugram in Haryana and Kolhapur in Maharashtra have 90 per cent of the cases recorded after May 18," they said.

As on June 11 evening, Udupi had a total of 969 positive cases, out of which 619 are active, while 735 positive cases have been reported in Yadgir, out of which 626 are active. The two districts had reported a total of only 11 cases each as on May 18. While Udupi till last evening had seen 349 discharges, it was 108 in Yadgir.

Both districts have reported one COVID related fatality so far. As of June 11 evening, cumulatively 6,245 COVID-19 positive cases were confirmed in the state, which included 72 deaths and 2,976 discharges.

Mysuru, Feb 1: The local police have arrested a man stabbed his irresponsible wife after she apparently hurt him with her naughty TikTok videos in Periyapatna of Mysuru district.

According to police, Srinivas stabbed his wife Savitha for TikTok videos where the latter featured with a different man.

The couple was not in good terms and was staying separately since few years. Savitha was residing in Mysuru and she used to send TikTok videos posing with another man to Srinivas.

The couple had two children, who reside with Srinivas, who was upset with the videos and invited Savitha to the birthday party of one of their children at Periyapatna.

He attacked her with a knife soon after she reached the function venue, Police said.
