Palemar returns to Mangalore, pleads innocence

Mangalore, February 20: The Mangalore North MLA Krishna J Palemar, who was forced to resign from his ministerial berth two weeks ago, has pleaded not guilty during his first visit to home constituency following the Assembly porngate.

Mr Palemar, who was one of the most influential politicians of Karnataka till February 7, when he faced the charge of providing porn clips to his two cabinet colleagues during the Assembly proceedings, speaking to media persons at his residence in the city on Monday expressed confidence that the House Committee probe would prove his innocence.

“The reason for my resignation was not that I did a mistake, rather, I did not want my district or state to have a shady image. Moreover I did not want to harm my party's image,” said Mr Palemar adding that people of the coastal district, where he was in-charge minister since last four-years knew about his 'character and personality'.

The MLA justified his prolonged silence over the issue saying he thought it was not appropriate to speak in the public when he had given a written statement before the House Committee formed to inquire into the porngate.

He admitted that he was in a state of mental shock following the unexpected incident in the Assembly. However, he expressed confidence that he would go to the people of the district once again after coming clean on porngate.

Mr Palemar also clarified that it was the Party's responsibility to decide whether to make him minister after coming clean on allegations or not.

Bengaluru, Mar 5: Amulya Leona, the 19-year-old woman who captured a nation’s attention by shouting full-throated slogans, allegedly in support of Pakistan, at a rally in Bengaluru, has reportedly held her composure under grilling by the Special Investigating Team (SIT).

The woman was arrested after her speech to an audience of protesters against the Citizenship Amendment Act on February 19, and was slapped with sedition charges.

Sources in the police said Amulya Leona seemed to be absolutely normal during interrogation by senior cops, unlike most other persons in such circumstances.

Not once throughout the grilling nor in judicial custody did she break down.

Amulya is said to have defended herself on charges that she shouted pro-Pakistan slogans. She made it clear that by speaking out at the rally at Freedom House, she did not mean to support the enemy country and that she was not against India.

Lower-rung officers said Amulya Leona seemed to be considerably influenced by the late firebrand activist Gowri Lankesh, who was shot dead in 2017.

In fact, the policewomen to whose charge she was entrusted right after she was arrested are said to have heaved a sigh of relief when she handed over to custody of prison staff.

An urban legend going around in lower-rung police circles is that Amulya Leona attended the funeral of Gowri Lankesh and fainted near where the late activist was buried. “It’s impossible for a 19-year-old to show such grit. We have seen hardcore criminals breaking down in custody. Forget about breaking down, Amulya Leona is becoming stronger,” they explain.

Bengaluru, Aug 6: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Wednesday asked the state chief secretary to take necessary steps in view of the rising rainfall in the state and gave instructions for releasing Rs 50 crore for emergencies.

"CM BS Yediyurappa has instructed Chief Secretary to take appropriate precautions in view of the rise in rainfall activity across the state. CM advised Chief Secretary to keep in touch with district officials and instructed to release Rs 50 crores for emergencies," an official release said.

India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert in a number of districts in the state.

CS Patil, Director, India Meteorological Department (IMD) Bengaluru said that red alert has been announced in Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, Chickamagalur, Shivamogga, Kodagu and Hassan due to heavy rainfall in the region from last two-three days.

Bengaluru, May 19: Karnataka on Tuesday recorded the highest single-day rise in the COVID-19 cases in the state as a whooping 149 people tested positive for the virus. With the spike in new cases, the overall tally has risen to 1,395.

This is for the first time the state recorded 100 plus cases in a single day. So far, 40 people have also succumbed to the virus including three deaths today. 

The new deaths consist of a 61-year-old male patient, a resident of Ballari; a 65-year-old male patient, a resident of Vijayapura; and a 54-year-old male patient from Bengaluru.

Among the new cases, a maximum of 71 are reported from Mandya, followed by 22 in Davanagere, 10 in Shivamogga, 13 in Kalaburgi, six in Bengaluru Urban, four each in Udupi and Uttara Kannada, five in Chikkamagaluru, three in Hassan and one each in Yadagiri, Chitradurga, Vijayapura, Gadag.

Most of the new cases are of the people who traveled to Mumbai in Maharashtra, Solapur, Ahmedabad, and Kerala.

The remaining are those who came in contact with the people who had tested positive earlier.

At present, 811 people are actively taking treatment, while 543 have been discharged after recovery.
