CPI(M) stages dharna against disconnecting drinking water supply

Mangalore, February 21: The members of the local unit of the CPI(M) on Tuesday staged a dharna in front of the Mangalore City Corporation demanding restoration of drinking water facility to Tannirbavi area on the outskirts of Mangalore.

In a memorandum submitted to the Commissioner of the MCC, the protesters expressed anguish over the unilateral decision of the authorities to disconnect the drinking water line to the area.

“The residents of Tannirbavi have been deprived of basic facilities for a long time. They have not been benefited from any of government's welfare schemes,” the memorandum said.

They have also not been given the door numbers making it difficult for them to access civic facilities. Despite several complaints no action has been taken to end their misery. CPI (M) had also staged protests on several occasions, besides submitting a memorandum to the District Commissioner, the protesters recalled.

Stepping up their apathy towards the hapless residents of Tannirbavi, the Corporation authorities has on disconnected the water supply to the area since February 16 as per the direction of the executive engineer Linge Gowda.

This is a clear violation of the promise given by the joint commissioner, who had said that the problem would be discussed at the Water Adalat, the CPI (M) said in the memorandum.

Sunil Kumar Bajal, Shameema Banu, member, Tannirbavi Horata Samithi, members of the Dalita Hakkugala Samiti, were present on the occasion.

Mangaluru, July 30: Medical doctor turned IAS officer K V Rajendra assumed charge as the 130th deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district here today.

The 2013 batch Karnataka cadre officer succeeds Sindhu B Rupesh, who was transferred as Director of Electronic Delivery of Citizen Services (EDCS), Bengaluru. The outgoing DC welcomed the new DC in the presence of staff. 

Dr Rajendra said that he expects cooperation from all stakeholders in administering the district, amidst the mounting Covid-19 cases.

Rajendra, an alumnus of JJM Medical College, Davanagere, was serving as the CEO of Belagavi zilla panchayat before being posted as DC of this coastal district. 

Having served as assistant commissioner of Puttur sub-division for nearly a year from December 2015, Dr Rajendra, hails from Thirthahalli in Shivamogga district, had his probationary training in Bidar. He posted as CEO of Ballari ZP where he worked for nearly three till 21, 2019.

He also had a brief stint as assistant secretary in the department of fertiliser with the ministry of chemicals and fertilisers.

Sindhu who was the CEO of Udupi zilla panchayat had succeeded Sasikanth Senthil, who resigned from the Indian Administrative Service on September 6, 2019. She had taken charge on September 7, 2019.

Bengaluru, April 3: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Friday held a meeting with Muslim leaders and legislators, seeking their cooperation in containing COVID-19.

In a press statement, the Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa said that the Muslim leaders have agreed to give details of persons who visited Tablighi Markaz in Nijamuddin and has also assured that they will convince the attendees to undergo tests for coronavirus and also follow quarantine rules.

CM Yediyurappa also informed media that the Muslim leaders are also advising the members of their community to offer prayers at home and also to stay indoors to maintain social distancing during "azan".

Also, an appeal has been made to the Muslim community to cooperate with the health workers during the treatment.

The Karnataka Chief Minister also appealed the masses not to pay heed to any sort of rumours pertaning to COVID-19. "Let all of us strictly follow precautionary measures and win the battle over caronavirus."

Udupi, May 28: The India Meteorologic Department (IMD) on Thursday warned fishermen in coastal belt of Karnataka against venturing out into the deep sea between May 31 and June 4.

The Department stated that depression is expected to occur in the south-eastern part of Arabian Sea and the nearby areas and it would be dangerous for the fishermen of Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep to go out towards the deep sea.

The Department officials said that they would provide information on development in weather conditions. In the backdrop of the current weather forecast, however, the fishermen in the western coastline were advised against venturing into the sea.
