2,800 children participate in Seva Dal integration convention

Mangalore, February 23: As many as 2,800 children from schools across the district attended the national integration convention organised by the Bharat Seva Dal here on Wednesday.

Dressed in their uniforms of green and white for the girls and blue and white for the boys, the children (classes VI, VII, and VIII) stood in the morning sun for the drill in neat rows.

After the inauguration, it was time for the drill, which was followed by lunch and the cultural programmes.

One of the teachers tried his best to get the children to aim for “clock-work precision”, but try as they might, it was a little difficult, possibly because the number of children was just too large and they had simply not been training. This said, the children did not lack enthusiasm in performing the drill. First, it was with the dumbbells, which they picked up with a command of “One-two, Bharat Seva Dal” after which the distinct chink of hundreds of dumbbells resounded in unison, a testimony to children's performance.

They performed with a long stick and an object called the “Lazem” (a stick which was attached to a few metallic objects to form a ring).

Soumya of class 7 in Kotebagilu (General) School near Moodbidri told The Hindu that she enjoyed the drill and songs taught in the Seva Dal gatherings. However, she has a slight dilemma for the future. She said that Seva Dal was only allowed up to class 8. After that, there was the National Cadet Corps in private schools. But the Seva Dal was only in government schools.

Bengaluru, July 22: Complete lockdown on Sundays and daily night curfew would continue across Karnataka to contain the coronavirus spread, a top officia.

"Though lockdown will be lifted from 5 am on Wednesday across the state, night curfew will continue daily from 9 pm to 5 am to restrict movement of people and vehicles. Total lockdown on Sundays will also continue on July 26 and August 2," said state Chief Secretary T.M. Vijaya Bhaskar in an order here.

The order to unlock Bengaluru and four other districts - Dakshina Kannada, Dharwad, Kalaburagi and Kodagu, which have been under 7-9 day lockdown since March 14 night came after Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa declared that lockdowns would not be re-imposed across the state hereafter.

Besides restrictions in containment areas to control the virus spread, the order banned reopening of gyms and prevented use of benches in parks by walkers or joggers.

"All vegetable and fruit markets in cities and towns across the state will be shifted to the suburbs or outskirts to decongest them and prevent crowding," said the order in Kannada.

Wearing mask, sanitising hands and maintaining social distancing will be strictly enforced and violators will be fined.

Suburban train and metro services will continue to remain shut till further orders.

Select long-distance express trains will continue to operate as per the standard operating procedure given by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs on May 30.

"State-run and private buses in cities and on intra-state and inter-state routes will operate with limited number of passengers to ensure physical distancing. All buses will be sanitized and fumigated after every trip," said the order.

Schools, colleges, cinema theatres, multiplexes will remain shut to prevent crowding and violation of social distancing.

Ban on religious functions and mass gatherings will also continue.

Belagavi, Feb 25: Left Parties will launch countrywide door-to-door campaign from March 1 to 23 against Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), National Population Register (NPR), National Register of Citizens (NRC), Communist Party of India (M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury said on Tuesday.

Addressing a press conference here, he said that CPI (M) and other Left parties were participating in the awareness programme that will conclude on March 23, on the martyrdom day of Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekar and Rajguru.

"Till now 13 states have expressed their opposition for NRC and will not implement it, which means more than fifty per cent of country will not have it," he added.

Bengaluru, Aug 4: Karnataka on Tuesday reported its biggest single-day spike of 6,259 Covid-19 cases and 110 fresh deaths, taking the total infection count to 1,45,830 and the toll to 2,704, the health department said.

The day also saw a record 6,777 patients getting discharged after recovery, outnumbering the fresh cases. Out of 6,259 fresh cases, a total of 2,035 cases were from Bengaluru Urban district. The previous biggest single-day record was on July 30 when the state added 6,128 cases.

A bulletin from the department said cumulatively 1,45,830 Covid-19 positive cases have been confirmed in the state and it included 2,704 deaths and 69,272 discharges. Out of the 73,846 active cases, as many as 73,212 patients were stable in isolation at designated hospitals while 634 in the intensive care units.

Among the fresh deaths, Bengaluru Urban accounted for 30 followed by Dakshina Kannada (13) and Mysuru (9).

Most of the people who succumbed either had a history of Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) or Influenza-like illness (ILI), the bulletin said. Besides Bengaluru Urban, the other districts which reported higher fresh cases on Tuesday are Mysuru 662, Kalaburagi 285, Ballari 284, Belagavi 263, Dakshina Kannada 225, Davangere 191, Dharwad and Hassan 188. Bengaluru Urban district continued to top the list of positive cases with a total of 63,033 infections, followed by Ballari 7,638 and Dakshina Kannada 6,388.

Among discharges too Bengaluru Urban tops the districts with 27,877 discharges, followed by Ballari 3,724 and Kalaburagi 3,470. A total of 14,89,016 samples had been tested so far, out of which 42,458 on Tuesday with 29,488 being rapid antigen tests.
