Legislators from DK, Udupi keep off Yeddy meeting

Mangalore, February 24: Amidst the mounting crisis in the ruling party of the state, legislators from the twin coastal districts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada, who enjoy a close relationship with Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda, have distanced themselves from the meeting at former CM B S Yeddyurappa's house.

Apart from MLAs and MLCs of twin district, Mangalore MP Nalin Kumar Kateel too kept off the meeting, despite the invitation. Though Mangalore North MLA Krishna J Palemar attended the meeting, he clarified to reporters that his intention was not leadership change.

However, energy minister Shobha Karandlaje, who also participated in her mentor's meeting did not make any public statement.

It's worth mentioning here that the BJP and RSS have a strong base in these two districts, besides the Malnad district of Chikmagalur, which shares a parliamentary constituency with Udupi.

However, most of the legislators, who avoided Yeddyurappa's meeting on Thursday, gave only two reasons: They were attending the Mangalore University convocation or making preparations for the Udupi-Chikmagalur byelection.

The legislators from the coastal districts are learnt to have decided not to openly identify with Yeddyurappa, who is spearheading the 'oust Gowda campaign'.

Meanwhile the Chief Minister, who participated in the 30^th convocation of Mangalore University on Thursday, held a secret meeting with prominent RSS leader Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat. The CM, who, has been very loyal to the party and the Sangh, which still wields considerable influence in these districts.

Bengaluru gym owners gear up to reopen after 5-month hiatus

Bengaluru, Jul 31: Gyms in Bengaluru carried out sanitation work on Thursday following the Centre's nod to reopen gyms from August 5, after several weeks of COVID-induced lockdowns.

"We are taking all the precautionary measures prescribed by the government and will follow the guidelines very strictly. A thermal scanner, oximeter and hand sanitizers have been placed at the entrance of the gym.

We request all other gym owners also to follow the guidelines strictly to keep their members safe and healthy," said Prasad Kumar, a gym owner in Bangalore.

He added, "The last few months have been very difficult for us gym owners and fitness instructors. We are very grateful to the government for allowing us to re-open.

We are going to be very cautious when we open. Even before this COVID-19 pandemic, we used to sanitise all the equipment before and after every use so hopefully, this won't be too difficult for us. We are getting rid of the air conditioners to allow cross ventilation and open the space a little more."

According to Chandu Gowda, an actor and frequenter of the gym, working out at home was not the same as working out in the gym with the proper equipment.

"I'm very glad that I get to come back and work out as I used to before this lockdown. For an actor, working out is extremely important, not just for my physical health but also mental health.

Doing exercises at home is never as good as exercising in a space dedicated to one purpose. I hope other members of the gym follow the rules and regulations religiously," Gowda said.

Pro-CAA arsonists burn down BSF Jawan’s house, call him ‘Pakistani’

New Delhi, Feb 29: The arsonists, who were allegedly hired by the pro-CAA politicians in Delhi to unleash violence against Muslims, did not even spare the residence of Border Security Force personnel Mohammed Anees.

While the jawan, who has spent three years guarding the borders along Jammu and Kashmir, had hoped that his job profile mentioned on the nameplate hung outside their two-storey house would discourage the vandals, he was proved wrong.

The nameplate on house number 76 in Khas Khajuri Gali clearly mentioned it was the property of a security force personnel who protects India’s borders from foreign invasions. Yet, it was burned down on the afternoon of February 25.

First, the ruthless goons set the vehicles parked outside the jawan’s house on fire, then they torched his home. Stones were also pelted at his house amid slogans of “idhar aa Pakistani, tujhe naagarikta dete hai” (Come here Pakistani, get your citizenship).

Apart from Anees, his father Mohammed Moonis, 55, uncle Mohd Ahmed, 59, and 18-year-old cousin Niha Parveen were in the house. Sensing what was about to go down next, they all escaped from the house, and were helped by paramilitary troops.

Charred remains of the house now stand where the house was till three days ago. In the two lanes of Khajuri Khas near Anees’s house, 35 houses were set on fire.

The loss suffered by the BSF soldier’s family was perhaps greater as they had kept all their life’s savings inside: two weddings in the family were to take place in the next three months.

Niha Parveen was to get married in April and Anees himself was to get married the following month. “All the things we collected all our life, jewellery – two gold necklaces, silver jewellery, it is all gone,” the family said.

“We used to buy jewellery on instalments… used to give money every month and collected this jewellery,” they said. Rs 3 lakh in cash for the wedding arrangements also got burnt along with other valuables and all their belongings.

Khajuri Khas is a Hindu-majority area, but Anees’s family says no neighbour of theirs was involved in the attack. “People came from outside.” Instead, their Hindu neighbours were asking the rioters to leave. They requested them to leave and helped douse the vehicles on fire.

Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat leads rally in DK Shivakumar’s bastion

Bengaluru, Jan 13: RSS leader Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat on Monday held a protest march at Ramnagar district’s
Kapalabetta under the aegis of Hindu Jagran Vedike’s ‘Kanakapura Chalo’ campaign against the construction of the world’s largest Jesus statue there.

Hundreds of protesters of the Vedike staged a protest march in the city starting from the Kanakapura Ayyappaswamy temple.

“We are not here to disturb the peace. We have met each other at the wedding of Sriramulu’s daughter. So you know who I am, DK Shivakumar. How long will you continue with these lies? Is the intention behind the statue of Jesus to solidify your vote bank? Build the statue in America or England, we will not allow it here,” said the RSS leader as the keynote speaker at the rally.
