HDK meets Mangalore Bishop along with prospective JD(S) Udupi LS candidate

Mangalore, February 24: Former chief minister and JD(S) state president H.D. Kumaraswamy on Friday met Bishop Dr. Aloysius Paul D'Souza at the Bishop House her in Kodialbail.

The meeting assumes significance in view of the upcoming bypoll for the Udupi-Chikmagalur Loksabha constituency. The JD(S) has decided to field its candidate for the by-election, but has not announced the name so far.

Mr. Kumaraswamy and the Bishop were closeted for half an hour, but the former chief minister refused to give any details to the waiting media persons. “It was a courtesy visit,” Mr. Kumaraswamy insisted.

He, however, stepped up his tirade against the BJP and the former chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa and said the BJP leaders were fighting against each other when a number of districts in the northern Karnataka are reeling under severe drought.

Lashing out at some BJP leaders for bringing in the name of former prime minister H.D. Deve Gowda with respect to the ongoing infighting in the ruling party, Mr. Kumaraswamy said, “it has become a habit for BJP to blame Deve Gowda and the members of his family for everything. They used our name to come to power. Now they are bringing up Deve Gowda's name to tide over the present crisis.”

It may be recalled that the Yeddyurappa camp has been accusing Sadananda Gowda of taking orders from Deve Gowda in matters related to administration.

The former chief minister also dared Sadananda Gowda to come to Dharmasthala and swear before Lord Manjunatha if or not he had received any instructions from the former prime minister.

He also urged the party workers to strive hard to make the party candidate in the Udupi-Chikmagalur by-poll victorious.

“We want to prove our strength. We will certainly field a candidate. The name will be announced on Monday” he said.

According to party sources, S.L. Bhoje Gowda's name has been finalized as the party nominee. “The chances of Bhoje Gowda being fielded as the candidate is 90 per cent,” said an office-bearer of the district unit, who did not want to be named.

A meeting of party leaders from Udupi and Chikmagalur districts had been convened on February 26. Based on their suggestions, the candidate would be announced the next day and the nomination would be filed on February 28, Mr. Kumaraswamy said.

Kumaraswamy said four names were under consideration namely Madhu Bangarappa, S L Bhoje Gowda, Mahendra Kumar and Dharme Gowda.

He asserted the party's leaders had taken this by-poll seriously and refused suggestions that the fight “is a symbolic one”.

"There are rumours doing rounds that JDS would withdraw candidate at last hour. Those are rumors floated by Congress and BJP leaders," he said.

During his visit to the Bishop House, president of the Udupi District JD(S) Deviprasad Shetty, Mr. Bhoje Gowda, District minority cell president D.M. Aslam, among others, were present.

Mangaluru, July 31: Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has unveiled a campaign both on digital media and outdoor billboards on bringing awareness on the right usage of masks, social distancing and hand washing in the fight against COVID19. The campaign has received very good response and attention on social media and with the citizens of Mangaluru.

While the numbers of Covid-19 infected people were increasing and a vaccine would take some more time it was observed that norms of social distancing and other precautionary practices were thrown to the wind. Many people in Dakshina Kannada were found using masks inappropriately. Wearing a mask in a scientific way by covering both the nose and mouth is imperative to control droplets that spread the virus. We need to rise above our inconvenience to fight the virus.

Considering this the KCCI found an immediate need to bring awareness and constant reminder to people on the right usage of masks, social distancing, washing hands and other dos and don’ts to stay ahead of the virus and beat the pandemic.

A digital campaign and an outdoor advertisement campaign were planned by the chamber to remind and encourage people to follow best practices when interacting with others. 

The theme of the Campaign was decided to be “Let’s Fight Back Together” Origin Designext a Creative Agency in Mangalore was roped in to do the creative for the campaign and a team from KCCI worked with the Agency to shape up the campaign with their inputs. In the meantime Indian Red Cross Society Dakshina Kannada and Rotary Mangaluru expressed their interest to support the Campaign. 

Mangaluru based outdoor agencies like Jyothi Advertisers, Kalkura Advertisers and Gee Dee Advertisers agreed to provide outdoor space gratis to this community service campaign. Presented both in English and Kannada, the campaign has been creating waves on social media and on the street, a sign that it is being very well received by the populace of Mangalore city. 

The creative of Half Covered or Half exposed where a model is shown with a mask that exposes the nose and KA-19 v/s COVID-19 (KA-19 being the Vehicle Registration Code for the District) have been particularly making a buzz in the community. All together 14 hoardings are currently on display with various Covid-19 awareness messages. Many business houses have shown interest to participate in this public awareness campaign.

The Chamber hopes this campaign would go a long way in the fight of the city against COVID-19 and play its role in putting the pandemic behind us. “Businesses and our economy has suffered enough, we need to work together to fight this virus, we need to rise above minor inconvenience and win this war,” says Isaac Vas the President to KCCI.

Gadag, Mar 28: At a time when the adminsitration is insisting on social diatancing due to COVID-19 outbreak, scores of people gathered in large numbers at an Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) market in Gadag district to buy essential commodities.

Both men and women could be seen standing in large groups near the vendors to buy fruits and vegetables. Some of the customers were also heard bargaining with the sellers in the morning today.

A couple of days back, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasised that social distancing is the only way to counter the spread of COVID-19, saying the virus does not discriminate and it can infect anyone.

Interacting with the people of Varanasi through video conferencing, the Prime Minister had stated that some people, despite being empowered with knowledge, are not pay heed to warning which is unfortunate.

He said the 'Mahabharata' war was won in 18 days and the war against coronavirus will take 21 days and the aim is to win it.

According to the Union Health Ministry, there are 873 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in India.

Bengaluru, Apr 28: Former Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday suggested that the government can allow sale of liquor in green zones. 

“Merely because there is an economic slowdown in the state, I don’t recommend that alcohol should be allowed to be sold. But, wherever there are green districts, they can open (liquor sale) with certain restrictions, I think,” Siddaramaiah, the leader of the Opposition, told reporters. 

There are 14 districts in the state that are categorised as green because they do not have any active COVID-19 cases. The green districts are: Yadgir, Raichur, Koppal, Haveri, Davangere, Shivamogga, Chitradurga, Udupi, Chikmagalur, Hassan, Kodagu, Chamarajanagar, Ramanagara and Kolar.

There is tremendous pressure on the B S Yediyurappa administration to revive the economy as the lockdown has dried up all revenue sources. Excise, alone, accounts for 18 per cent of Karnataka’s own tax revenue. 

The Excise department recently suggested allowing regulated sale of liquor through the state-run MSIL outlets. The government, however, did not approve it fearing crowding and backlash from the Centre.
