Interstate credit card cloning racket busted

Mangalore, February 25: Sleuths of city crime branch (CCB) of Mangalore City Police on Saturday busted a two-member inter-state gang of cheats who had perfected the art of cloning credit cards.

The arrested are Zishan Mohammad (24), son of Ihsanullah from Richards Town, Bangalore, and Gujarat based Kelwin Patel (26), who was residing at Kudroli, Mangalore.

Mangalore City Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh told media persons at his office that the duo have had transactions with American Express bank, Standard Chartered bank, Citibank through six credit cards and they were also using methods of making fake credit cards and confiscating account numbers of different people.

They used to transfer funds into the credit cards using special software and possessed writers and readers to operate their business, he said.

The police have also recovered from them a laptop which had the software to transfer account numbers into the fake credit cards. A magnetic swipe card, IC card, readers and writers were also recovered. The accused also possessed receipts of purchases of up to Rs 3.5 lakhs from a shop and also usage of the cards at Leela Palace Hotel in Bangalore. They used mobile phones and internet modems to operate their business, informed the commissioner.

Mr Singh said that the accused used to steal account numbers from national and international account holders and with the help of their equipment transferred funds into the credit cards. Their mobiles contained several details of account numbers and SMS sent to pass on information about account numbers, he said adding that the case might involve several other persons and an investigation is on.

Mangaluru, July 30: The Social Democratic Party of India has condemned the move by the state government to drop a lesson on legendary Mysuru rulers Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan from the class 7 textbook.

The Department of Public Instruction has omitted the chapter from the textbooks of Class 7 in their attempt to reduce syllabus for state board schools by 30 per cent.

The department, however, has decided to retain similar chapters on Tipu Sultan in 6th and 10th Classes, though the syllabus in text books for all classes from 1 to 10th has been trimmed. 

In a media release statement, SDPI State President Ilyas Mohammed Thumbe termed the move as communally motivated. “By dropping the lesson, the BJP-led government is engaged in saffronisation of education,” he alleged.

He said that Tipu was the most prominent freedom fighter, who had given priority to irrigation, rocket technology and harmony. The BJP government is also planning to scrap lessons on the Constitution, secularism and democracy. By twisting history, the BJP is trying to mislead the younger generation, he added.

Chamaranagara, Mar 29: As many as 595 Tamil Nadu-based fishermen, who were working in Mangaluru, crossed the Karnataka border and reached their state via Chamarajanagar on Saturday.

Police said following the lockdown, the fishermen had left Mangaluru in more than 20 vehicles. The fishermen crossed the Karnataka border through Punajur check-post. However, the vehicles returned after dropping them near Hasanur check-post in Tamil Nadu.

As the fishermen had no proper documents, they were stopped by Tamil Nadu Police. However, the police allowed them after screening. The Tamil Nadu government arranged vehicles to ferry them, said a police officer.

Madikeri, Apr 22: The quality of water in the River Cauvery in Kodagu district has improved significantly following the nationwide Lockdown.

The discharge of effluents from home stays and resorts situated on the banks of the river in the district has stopped due to lack of visitors. The discharge of waste water had made the river impure all these years.

The suspension of boat ride in Dubare has reduced the pollution from diesel motorboats in the river. For the last few years, the water quality of the river had reached 'C' category from 'B' category during the summer.
