Mayoral choice narrows down to three women candidates

Mangalore, February 27: The tussle for the mayoral candidature within the Bharatiya Janata Party appears to have narrowed down to three contenders, as the Government has reserved the post of Mayor for the fifth year for a woman from Backward Class (A) category.

Sources within the ruling party of Mangalore City Corporation have confirmed that the city was all set to have another women Mayor.

The names of Corporators Surekha Srinivas (Central Market ward) from Ganiga caste, Roopa D. Bangera (Kadri North) from Kumbara caste, and Shantha R. (Panjimogaru) from Shettigar caste are doing the rounds as the front runners for the Mayoral post.

Although councillors Rajani Dugganna (Hosabettu) and Revathi K. (Surathkal West) qualify to contest, the party was unlikely to field them as Ms. Dugganna had already served as Mayor and Revathi as the chairperson of the Standing Committee for Taxation, Finance and Appeals.

The last three Mayors were from wards under Mangalore North Assembly constituency. They were Ganesh Hosabettu (Kulai ward), M. Shankar Bhat (Derebail East), and Rajani Dugganna (Hosabettu). Present Mayor Praveen represented Derebail South ward under Mangalore South Assembly Constituency.

The one-year term of present Mayor Praveen would end this month end. Next one year would be crucial for the BJP as the council of MCC would have to go for the polls in 2013 as the present five-year term of the council would come to an end in March, 2013, sources said.

Mangaluru, Apr 15: Santhosh Kumar Padil, ASI attached to Mangaluru East (Kadri) Police Station, has helped two children unite with their parents in Kerala.

The children had come to Mangaluru during the holidays and could not return to their native place following the closure of border and lockdown. The two children, hailing from Manjeshwara in Kasargod district, were in the house of their relatives in Mangaladevi and were eager to join their parents.

The relatives of the children had brought the issue to the notice of the ASI and sought his help in the matter.

Mangaluru, Apr 20: As Wenlock hospital has been converted into corona hospital, all the heads of private medical college hospitals have been instructed to treat Wenlock Hospital's out patients and in patients at a government hospital fare or at the charges of Wenlock Hospital, said Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh on Sunday.

Treatment is also been given at Bijai, Yekkur, Kulur, Jeppu, Surathkal, Kulai, Padil, Shaktinagar, Bengre and Bunder Primary Health Centers. Patients with MLC (Medico Legal Case) or Police Case may seek treatment at a private medical college or city primary center.

Some private hospitals have already agreed to provide free dialysis services, as requested by the government.

Bengaluru, May 29: The Karnataka government has requested the Civil Aviation Ministry to reduce the number of flights, emanating from Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan to the state in view of the high number of Covid-19 Cases prevalent there.

In a clarification issued to the Media this evening, the Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs Mr J C Madhuswamy has said that Karnataka has not sought for imposing a ban on flights emanating from these places, as reported in some sections of the Media.

Karnataka has appealed to the Civil Aviation Ministry to take steps to lessen the air traffic to the State, with the sacred intention that there may not be adequate quarantine facilities if there is huge turnout at a short period, he added.
