Journos hold silent protest walk against lawyers' assault

Mangalore, March 3: A silent protest walk was organized by Dakshina Kannada Working Journalists' Association from clock tower circle to Deputy Commissioner's office in the city on Saturday against the assault by lawyers on journalists and policemen in Bangalore's City Civil Court premises.

Media persons carried black flags and wore black ribbons to express their condemnation of the shameful incident.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Harish Rai, President of the Association, said that media persons are not weak and their rights should not be taken lightly. “Any journalist in any part of the state is our brother. Besides, they have not even spared policemen who strive to protect us. We are with all those who have suffered in the incident”, he said.

Mr. Rai also demanded that stringent action be taken against those lawyers who displayed goonda behavior on Friday. “The Chief Minister hails from our district. He should take strict action against those who are guilty. If the government does not take apt actions quickly, we will intensify our agitation” he said.

In his address Mr. Ravindra Shetty, Former President of the Association, said that there is no need of a judicial enquiry in this case as ordered by the government. “The whole episode took place where judicial representatives were involved. The matter should be handed over to the CBI”, he demanded.

Media persons representing various newspapers, magazines, web portals and TV channels took part in the protest.

Madikeri, Jan 17: Kannada and Telugu actor Rashmika Mandanna is likely to be further interrogated by Income Tax (I-T) officials on Friday.

The residence and properties by the family of Rashmika were raided by I-T officials on Thursday morning. Following summons issued by I-T officials, Rashmika rushed to her residence on Thursday night and gave details on investments and other financial transactions.

After the interrogation, the I-T officials left for Serenity hall, which is owned by Rashmika's father, at Virajpet at around 2.30 am and stayed back there.

The I-T officials have reportedly directed Rashmika and her father Madan Mandanna not to leave the house.

Bengalur, May 2: Two people died of COVID-19 in Karnataka on Saturday taking the toll in the state to 25, whereas nine more tested positive for the virus, pushing the tally to 598, the health department said. Two deaths were reported in Bidar and Bengaluru urban, the health department said in a statement.

An 82-year-old person with a history of Severe Acute Respiratory Illness died in Bidar. While the second fatality was a 62-year-old man with a history of diabetes, hyper-tension, renal failture and was on multiple myeloma on chemotherapy, in Bengaluru. He too had complained of breathlessness on April 30 and died on Saturday at the designated hospital.

Among the nine new cases, two each are from Tumakuru, Vijayapura, one each from Bidar, Chikkaballapura, Belagavi, Bagalkot and Bengaluru urban. Cumulatively, 598 COVID-19 positive cases have been confirmed in the state and it includes 25 deaths.

Bengaluru, Jun 8: Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) chief DK Shivakumar on Sunday said that Congress is a secular party and they clearly do not want any third candidate from BJP to win the Rajya Sabha elections.

Speaking to news agency, Shivakumar said, "We are a secular party. We are very clear that we don't want any BJP third candidate to win the Rajya Sabha election. My leader, Sonia Gandhi will take a call on it."
"My party leaders have taken a call on HD Devegowda Ji, very soon they will come with an announcement," he added.

Shivakumar had on Saturday said that the party has decided to field one candidate for the forthcoming Rajya Sabha elections.

He said the party would soon take a decision on the issue of support to former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda's candidature to the Upper House.
The elections to fill the vacant 18 Rajya Sabha seats from seven states will be held on June 19.
