Statewide boycott of courts: 5,000 lawyers stay away from work in DK

Mangalore, March 5: Legal services across Karnataka including in the coastal city of Mangalore were affected on Monday as lawyers responded positively to the boycott call given by the Advocates Association of Bangalore.

The call for boycott of courts across state was given to protest alleged “police excesses” against some of its members at the civil court complex in Bangalore last week. An emergency meeting of AAB, convened to discuss the violent incidents and police action on Friday and also media reports against lawyers, blamed police “failure” for the ugly events that unfolded.

As part of a slew of counter-attack measures adopted by the advocates following the unsavoury attacks on the media and the police nearly 5,000-odd lawyers stayed away from court work in Dakshina Kannada district.

AAB president KN Subba Reddy said had the police initiated timely action, the attacks would not have occurred.

The state media has rejected the judicial probe into the attack as an "eyewash" and demanded that guilty advocates be brought to book immediately.

He said the meeting passed a resolution seeking the transfer of DGP and IGP Shankar Bidari and Bangalore city police commissioner BG Jyoti Prakash Mirji from their posts.

“We have also decided not to take up cases of media houses as they have portrayed lawyers badly”, Reddy said.

Reddy said the association suspected an outside hand in the attack on media persons and claimed he had information that some 100 black coats were purchased from the association by unidentified persons.

Police have arrested four advocates ans are looking for other suspects. A senior police officer, refusing to be identified, said the police were questioning several advocates but no fresh arrests were made.

The four arrested lawyers were remanded to judicial custody till 16 March by the sixth additional chief metropolitan magistrate Churi Khan on late Saturday night.

The arrests came after the media in the state rejected the judicial probe into the attack as an “eyewash” and demanded that guilty advocates be brought to book immediately.

Sixty-five persons, including 52 police personnel, were injured when lawyers went on a rampage protesting media presence at the hearing of former minister and mining baron Janardhan Reddy in a mining case in the civil court complex on Friday.

Bengaluru, May 3: Erection of barricades and drawing up of boxes or circles aimed at maintaining social distancing were seen in front of liquor shops in different parts of Karnataka on Sunday, a day ahead of their reopening after a gap of over 40-days, due to the lockdown.

Karnataka Excise Commissioner on Saturday had ordered that only CL-2 (retail shops) and CL-11C (state-run retail shops like Mysore Sales International Limited) would open from May 4.

It had permitted liquor sale liquor between 9 am and 7 pm only in areas that are outside COVID-19 containment zones.

Reports of barricades being erected to ensure that people stand in line and drawing of boxes or circles in front of shops to maintain social distancing in front of retail and MSIL shops have emerged from across the state, including the state capital.

Also reports about shop keepers doing special poojas outside liquor shops in Kolar and some even illuminating their outlets with lights from outside have surfaced from other parts of the state.

Meanwhile, officials were engaged in checking stocks ahead of the shops opening on Monday morning.

"We are making all preparations to ensure that government rules are followed. We also seek the cooperation of the people and police," the manager of a shop said.

Another said there may be a rush initially, after which things may get back to normal.

"We expect things to go on smoothly," he added.

Calling for number of customers to be limited to five at a time while ensuring that they maintain social distancing of not less than six feet distance, the order states that customers and the staff will have to wear masks and sanitizers should be used at the shops.

Only stand alone CL-2 and CL-11C shops are allowed to commence liquor sale and not those at malls and super markets, it said.

Officials in Bengaluru said liquor sale is prohibited in 26 containment zones in the city, while in other places rules that have been prescribed need to be followed.

In case of any violation, strict action would be taken, including imposing of penalty, they said.

There was pressure on the government to kick start economic activities, including allowing sale of liquor, to boost the state's finances as excise is the key area which generates revenue.

State Excise Minister H Nagesh had recently pegged the losses at Rs 60 crore per day because of closure of liquor shops, due to the lockdown.

Bengaluru, Jul 28: As many as 5,536 new COVID-19 cases and 102 deaths were reported in Karnataka on Tuesday, according to the State Health Department.

With these new cases of coronavirus, the total number of positive cases in the state stands at 1,07,001 including 64,434 active cases, 40,504 discharges and 2,055 deaths.

India on Tuesday reported 47,704 more COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the country's count of coronavirus cases to 14,83,157, informed the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Out of the total cases, there are 4,96,988 active cases in the country while the number of patients cured/discharged and migrated stands at 9,52,744. With 654 deaths due to COVID-19 in the country reported in the last 24 hours, the death toll rises to 33,425.

Kanhangad, May 10: Kasaragod district has become free from COVID-19 on Sunday.

The last remaining patient has been tested negative for coronavirus, said district medical officer Dr. A. V. Ramdas.

He added that the officials are proud to have been able to cure all 178 COVID-19 patients in the district.
