Mangalore crash: Investigation in disaster a sham?

Mumbai, March 9: Member of Civil Aviation Safety Advisory Committee alleges cover-up by investigating agencies to ensure role of AAI, AI, DGCA does not come into question

The investigation report on the ill-fated Air India Express flight 812 that crashed in Mangalore on May 22, 2010 is inviting flak from all quarters.

A top aviation expert, who is associated with the Safety Advisory Committee of the Civil Aviation Ministry, has raised serious doubts over the investigation in the unfortunate incident.

Captain Mohan Ranganathan, former Air India pilot and a member of Civil Aviation Safety Advisory Committee of the Civil Aviation Ministry, has alleged a huge cover-up in the investigation report. "The probe was not the done the way it should have been. It seems the investigating agencies have ensured that the role of Airports Authority of India (AAI), Air India (AI) and Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) does not come into question. Besides, the agencies have shifted the entire blame on pilots, which is not true," he contended.

Ranganathan also alleged that it is not the first time this is done to protect interests of the government agencies. "Similar cover-ups were done in all the investigations that I have come across. I have raised this issue time and again with the ministry, aviation secretary and other agencies, but it fell on deaf ears all the time."

Earlier this week, Yeshwant Shenoy, a Mumbai-based lawyer and president of 812 Foundation, an organisation dedicated to the victims of 812 mishap, filed a private complaint before a Mangalore court questioning the role of AAI, AI and DGCA during the crash. Shenoy has demanded a reinvestigation of the case.

Bengaluru, Aug 2: A total of 5,532 new cases of COVID-19 and 84 deaths were reported in Karnataka in the last 24 hours, the state's health department informed on Sunday.

With this, the Karnataka's COVID-19 tally now stands at 1,34,819 positive cases, including 74,590 active cases and 57,725 discharges.
So far, 2,496 deaths have been reported from the state.

India's COVID-19 count on Sunday crossed the 17 lakh-mark with 54,736 positive cases and 853 deaths reported in the country.

"The total COVID-19 cases stand at 17,50,724 including 5,67,730 active cases, 11,45,630 cured/discharged/migrated and 37,364 deaths," said the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry.

Bengaluru, Mar 25: Former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday targetted Centre over surge in coronavirus cases in the country, alleging that the government has miserably failed in tackling the unprecedented situation and was still not managing the crisis well.
"The government has miserably failed in tackling this very serious disease. They are not properly managing the crisis," senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah told ANI.
Siddaramaiah's response comes a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a 21-day lockdown in the entire country to deal with the spread of coronavirus, saying that "social distancing" is the only option to deal with the disease, which spreads rapidly.
In a televised address to the nation, Prime Minister Modi said that it is vital to break the chain of the disease and experts have said that at least 21 days are needed for it.
The Prime Minister said the lockdown has drawn a "Lakshman Rekha" in every home and people should stay indoors for their own protection and for that of their families.
Noting that the Centre has on Tuesday allocated Rs 15,000 crore for the treatment of coronavirus patients and to strengthen health infrastructure, he said testing facilities, personal protective equipment, isolation beds, ICU beds, ventilators and other necessary materials will be ramped up.
The Prime Minister said the country will have to bear the economic cost of lockdown but saving the life of every citizen is his priority and the priority of the Central and state governments as also of local administrations.
Noting that the virus spreads like fire, he said that if care is not taken for 21 days, the country, a family can go behind by 21 years.
According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), India has reported about 536 individuals have been confirmed positive among suspected cases and contacts of known positive cases. A total of 22,694 samples from March 24 till 8 pm.
Ten people have died so far due to the deadly virus, according to the data by Union health ministry.

Udupi, Jan 1: A 53-year-old Journalist of a Mangalore-based media house was found dead at his flat in Manipal on Tuesday.

The deceased has been identified as Rohit Raj (53), a resident of Pandeshwar Mangaluru.

According to the Manipal police, on December 31, Rohit Raj had attended a New Year party celebration at Kadiyali, Udupi along with his wife.
