Mangalore, March 10: Mangalore University has decided to take control of admissions of students to postgraduate courses offered by government degree colleges under its jurisdiction from the academic year 2012-13. But its decision is subject to the approval of the Government.

Speaking at the academic council meeting on Friday Vice-Chancellor T.C. Shivashankara Murthy said that the university had learnt about the government colleges flouting procedures while admitting students to postgraduate courses this academic year. Hence he would be writing to the Government shortly to permit the university to conduct admissions and allot students to the colleges.

According to it, the university would publish an advertisement on admissions, conduct entrance tests, announce the merit and waiting list, follow reservation norms, and allot students to colleges. Now this procedure was being applied for admitting postgraduate students to government-aided private colleges and unaided private colleges. The university wanted to extend the same to government colleges.

In case of private colleges – aided or otherwise – the university filled up 50 per cent of the allotted seats and the rest by managements.

The university had learnt that some of the colleges directly recruited students without publishing an advertisement.

Admissions

He said that if the Government did not permit to take control of the admissions, the university would monitor the admission of such colleges in the next academic year and take appropriate action if they found flouting procedures.

There were 32 government colleges under the university with some of them offering the postgraduate courses for over two years. Of the colleges, seven had applied to the university to permit them to offer select postgraduate courses for 2012-13.

Mr. Murthy said that the university would offer certificate, diploma, and postgraduate diploma courses in Tulu under the correspondence mode from the next academic year. The council agreed to sanction affiliation to three new colleges namely Melkar Degree College, Marnabail, Bantwal; Vidyarashmi Degree College, Savanur, Puttur; and St. Lawrence College, Moodubelle, Udupi.

Registrar (administration) K. Chinnappa Gowda, Registrar (evaluation) P.S. Yadapadithaya and Finance Officer P. Pakkeerappa were present.

Kasaragod, Apr 17: Even as this district continue to remain in the high-alert red zone category of Covid-19, Kasaragod has slowly but steadily been limping back to restraint level of the pandemic from a possible slipping into a stage-3 of community spread early this month.

Thanks to the stringent and committed measures implemented by the district administration crisscross the district besides total isolation of few localities by enforcing triple lockdown.

The district had been a Covid-19 hotspot ever since an NRI who returned from the Gulf violated quarantine protocol and travelled wide and far by meeting and contacting with several people including two MLAs of the district. That apart the irresponsible attitude of the people who broke the rules of quarantine and lockdown norms also made things go from bad to worse resulting in contributing for a near-half of the total positive cases in the state at the beginning of April.
