Mangalore, Mar 11, 2012: Mangalore based SDM Law College student Wafa Sultana has been adjudged 'best parliamentarian' at a model parliament competition organized on Saturday in Hubli.

wafa sultanaAs many as 40 students from 12 law colleges across the State, representing various 'constituencies', had participated in the proceedings that were part of the State-level S S Shettar Memorial Model Parliament Competition 2012 organised on Saturday by the Hubli based KLE Society's G K Law College.

Responding to the award, Ms Sultana said that she was deeply interested in Islamic Shariah and issues of human rights.

Ms Sultana is the daughter of Karkala based couple Muhyuddin and Umaira Khathoon. After studying up to Class VI in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, she returned to her native and continued the education in Karkala and Mangalore.

After much debate and a walkout by opposition members, the 'Prevention of public agitation by coercive methods to enact laws bill, 2012' was defeated in the 'model parliament'.

'Speaker' of the model parliament and the former Speaker of the Assembly Ramesh Kumar put the bill to vote.

While 'ruling party' members demanded that it be passed in the interests of protecting the supremacy of parliament, 'opposition' members argued that it would take away the voice of the people.

In the almost three-hour long discussions, students quoted from various constitutional provisions to support their arguments.

Asmatunnisa G of Vidyavardhaka Law College, Mysore, and Gouramohan Mishra of BMS Law College, Bangalore, got second and third prizes in the competition.

Ramesh Kumar advised against making sweeping comments against the people and Parliament. Principal of the host college G B Patil and advocate G R Andanimath, the coordinator of the event, were present.

Bengaluru, May 28: A thousand government schools in Karnataka are set to get Englishmedium sections from this academic year (2020-21). These institutions will function in both English and Kannada medium.

The decision was taken by primary and secondary education minister S Suresh Kumar and officials of the education department at a meeting on Wednesday.

Suresh Kumar said dualmedium will help improve the standard of schools and enable their development. The poorest of the poor spend almost 40% of their income on their children’s education in private schools. With the introduction of dual-medium, the government hopes such families will be able to save their earnings, he said. These schools will impart lessons in both English and Kannada. They will also provide textbooks in both languages.

‘Kannada must for all’

The meeting reviewed implementation of the compulsory Kannada Language Learning Act, 2015. Officials from the Kannada Development Authority were present at the meeting who claimed that some private schools have failed to implement the Act properly.

“Action will be taken against such institutions. Every child studying in schools across the state must learn Kannada,” Kumar said at the meeting.
