Mayor, Dy Mayor feted by their school

Mangalore, March 13: The newly elected Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Mangalore City Corporation were given a warm felicitation by the alumni association and management committee of BEM High School and College in the city on Tuesday.

Interestingly, both Mayor Gulzar Banu and Deputy Mayor Amitha Kala were the alumni of same institution. Established in 1838, the institution has a history of over 173 years.

Responding to the felicitation both the representatives of civic body recalled their student life and pledged to provide all the necessary help for the development of the oldest education institution of Dakshina Kannada district.

President of the institution Walter J Maben, Vice President Alvin Colaco, Correspondent Rohan Shiri, Alumni Association President Vittal Acharya, Treasurer Raghava Mayya, Principal Roshan Kumar, BEM High School principal Jayashekhar were present among others.

Bengaluru, Jul 19: Three legislators of the opposition Congress in Karnataka, including 2 MLAs and 1 MLC tested positive for coronavirus and are under treatment, a party official said on Saturday.

"Our Bailhongal MLA Mahantesh Koujalgi in Belagavi district and Humnabad MLA Rajashekhar Patil and his MLC brother Chandrashekhar Patil in Bidar district tested positive for the infection and are under treatment at designated hospitals," party spokesman Ravi Gowda told media persons in Bangaluru.

Koujalgi's swab sample was taken on Friday after he showed signs of illness and its result turned positive earlier in the day.

"As Koujalgi attended a review meeting at Bailhongal, about 20 officials who participated in the meeting have been home quarantined," said Gowda.

Koujalgi is the second lawmaker in the state's northwest region to test positive after BJP's Belagavi North assembly segment MLA Anik Benake tested positive for the virus on July 15.

"Patil brothers were in self quarantine after meeting BJP's Bidar Lok Sabha member Bhagwanth Khuba, who tested positive on Wednesday. Their tests also showed they were infected with the virus," Gowda said.

Congress MLC Sandesh Nagaraj, who tested positive on Friday, is under treatment at a private hospital in Mysuru.

Dakshina Kannada district Youth Congress president Mithun Rai is in institutional quarantine in Bengaluru after he tested positive for the infection.

Bengaluru,  Aug 4: Karnataka has seen a substantial increase in COVID-19 recovery rate, which was 5.67 per cent in the last week, state Medical Education Minister Dr. K Sudhakar said.

"Every day there is an increase in recovery rate which is higher by 9.17 per cent in Bengaluru city. The overall recovery rate of the state by Sunday evening was 42.81 per cent and it is 35.14 per cent in Bengaluru," the Minister wrote in a tweet.

Minister Sudhakar also directed officials to resolve the issue raised by a woman who had written to him about her struggle to take possession of the body of her father in St. Johns hospital, Madivala.

The hospital she claimed was charging money to hand over the body.

"It is inhuman on part of the hospital to refuse handover of the body. I came to know about this incident in the media and responded immediately to help out the woman," Dr. Sudhakar wrote in his tweet.

Karnataka has so far reported 74,598 active COVID-19 cases, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Mangaluru, May 30: Coastal district of Dakshina Kannada today recorded third covid-19 death as a 67-year-old woman from Bantwal taluk succumbed to the coronavirus at the district Wenlock Hospital, the designated Covid hospital.

The victim is said to be a neighbor of two women (daughter-in-law and mother-in-law) who died of the coronavirus a few days ago. 

On April 18 due to difficulties in breathing, she was rushed to Wenlock Hospital, where she was tested positive for coronavirus. Initially she responded to treatment. However, her condition started worsening earlier this week and breathed her last today evening.

Her daughter also has been tested positive for the deadly virus and she is currently undergoing treatment.
