It is learnt that two miscreants in the gang stormed into the office of Academy in Presidium complex at Attavar and brutally attacked Uchil around 1:45 pm.

A severely injured Uchil was rushed to Unity Hospital in the city for emergency treatment.

Medical sources said that the condition of the victim is critical, as he sustained severe injuries on his head and other parts of the body.

Senior police officers rushed to the spot. Sniffer dogs were also pressed into action. Police have recovered a sharp weapon, which was found lying near the spot. The assailants have also left their bag in which the weapons were brought at the spot of crime and slippers belonging to them have also been found, it is learnt.

It is being reported that four persons arrived at the spot in two Bajaj Pulsar motorbikes and attacked Uchil when hardly anyone was present in the office. Two women staff of the Academy, who spoke to media persons after the attack, said that they had finished their lunch and left the office to wash their hands.

"The assailants may have threatened the lone staff who sits in the front portion of the office and attacked Mr. Uchil. We had gone out to wash hands and we heard sounds of glass breaking. We thought it could be coming from the nearby hotel. But we realised that all shopkeepers around were closing down their shutters and we too got into one such shop", said a woman staff of the Academy.

Umarabba, Registrar of the Academy said that he had been to attend a wedding. "I was not here at the spot when the incident took place. It appears that the assailants had planned their time of attack", he said.

Mr Uchil, who took over as the Academy president on February 6, this year, is also the General Secretary of the Dakshina Kannada District unit of BJP Minority Morcha. He is also one of the members of District Wakf Advisory Council.

Mangaluru, Mar 27: Amid fear of coronavirus spread, the District Collector on Friday ordered the closure of the city’s major fishing area Dhakke.

''The fish caught by us on Wednesday were dumped, without being sold'', fishermen said. Meanwhile, a few them obtained police permission and took the fish to the nearby fish mill.

All the boats which had gone for fishing are back to the dock and the port is deserted. Also, the fishermen who went fishing have been advised to return.

Bengaluru, Feb 12: Karnataka Sanghatanegala Okkoota, a congregation of various pro-Kannada organisations, has called for a state-wide bandh in Karnataka on Thursday (13 February 2020) demanding reservation in jobs for Kannadigas in both government and private sectors.

The Karnataka bandh, which will begin from 6 am to 6 pm, is likely to impact life in Bengaluru as well as in other parts of the state. Interestingly, Ola and Uber drivers have also extended support to the bandh.

In Bengaluru, some other drivers’ associations, including Jai Bharatha Vehicle Owners and Drivers Association and Adarsha Auto and Taxi Union have also supported the bandh.

It is not yet clear as to whether the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) staff and workers associations will back Thursday’s bandh.

Several other organisations like the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC), Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), and Lorry Owners Association have supported the February 13 bandh.

In view of the bandh call, schools, colleges and hospitals across Karnataka are likely to remain closed on Thursday.

The Sarojini Mahishi report, which in 1984 suggested that Kannadigas should be given some reservation in jobs in private companies, public sector undertakings and multinational companies, is yet to be implemented.

It is to be noted that Sarojini Mahishi, a four-time MP and Janatha party leader, was appointed by the Ramakrishna Hegde government to head the panel in 1983. The committee submitted an interim report in June 1984. However, a final report was tabled in December 1986 with 58 recommendations, of which the Karnataka government had accepted 45.

Bengaluru, May 2: Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president DK Shivakumar has urged Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa to help the farmers in sending their produce to a market here amid the coronavirus lockdown.

The Congress leader made the appeal to the Chief Minister after listening to the farmers' issues while visiting KR Puram market on Friday.

Farmers told Shivakumar that the police are stopping their vehicles going towards the market despite the order passed by the Centre permitting the movement of vehicles carrying essential commodities during the lockdown.

"I have received calls from more than 100 farmers in the past few days. Every day, farmers from Kolar, Chikballapur, Malur and many other places come to KR Puram market to sell their agricultural goods, but their vehicles are stopped by the police. The cops do not allow them to sell fruits and vegetables. I request the Chief Minister to look into the matter and help the farmers," Shivakumar told reporters.

"I got to know that more than 50 vehicles were sent back. This government is of no use if they cannot secure the interests of the farmers. This government is not providing required support to the farmers," he added.

The Congress leader was accompanied by MLC Narayana Swamy and former president of Hoskote Authority Narayana Gowda during the visit to KR Puram market.
