Adivasi committee protests arrest of student over alleged Naxal-link

Mangalore, March 15: The co-ordination committee for the rights of Adivasis on Thursday staged a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office and voiced their resentment over the arrest of Vittala Malekudiya, a journalism student of Mangalore University.

Vittala was taken into custody for allegedly supporting the Naxal activities in Belthangady area. Police are claiming that a book of Bhagath Singh was found with Vittala which they say he used to spread naxalism. The police custody of Vittala was extended by five more days by the Belthangady court on Wwednesday.

Vittala was arrested over a week ago after he had gone to visit his father, who had earlier been taken into custody by the police.

Speaking on the occasion, B Madhava, secretary DK District unit of CPI(M) said, the arrest of the student was a ploy to diver the attention of the people at a time when the ruling BJP was reeling under scams.

“Possessing a book on Bhagath Singh cannot be construed as Vittala was supportive of Naxals. The arrest raises a question mark about whether democracy was still alive,” he said.

Denouncing the arrest, B M Bhat, president of Dakshina Kannada District Beedi Worker's Association ridiculed the police for making paper clippings of various newspapers like Udayavani, Prajavani, Vijaya Karnataka a basis for suspecting Vittala's link with Naxals. “This kind of atrocities must stop immediately. By merely keeping books of freedom fighters one does not become a naxal,” he said.

The protesters also expressed outrage on police atrocities committed on Vittala's father Lingappa Malekudiya. “About two months ago the Anti-Naxal Force killed their own personnel and tried to hoodwink people. Now they have come up with stories about Vittala, Mr. Bhat said.

The Adivasi Samanvaya Samiti demanded immediate release of Vittala to safeguard his future.

Shivamogga, Apr 13: Banana farmers in Shivamogga say their crop is rotting and they are incurring huge losses amid lockdown due to COVID-19.

The farmers alleged that although permission has been granted for the sale of agricultural products, with inter-district movements being affected, the local buyers are forcing the farmers to sell their produce at ridiculously low prices.

"Local buyers are asking us to sell bananas at Rs 4-5 per kg which is impossible for us. I do not know what we can do," Vijayendra, a farmer told ANI here.

"We expected the markets to be good during the summer season, I have cultivated bananas in four acres of land. There are thousands of other farmers who cultivate it in smaller hoardings," he added.

The farmer further implored the government to ensure there is an open market and inter-district movement of agricultural produce is allowed to ensure the farmers get the right price.

Vijayendra also said that the bananas have started rotting as they were not being harvested due to the lockdown.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had last month announced a 21-day lockdown in the entire country effective from March 24 midnight to deal with the spread of coronavirus, saying that "social distancing" is the only option to deal with the disease, which spreads rapidly.

There is also the likelihood that the nationwide lockdown might further be extended even after the completion of the 21-day period on April 14, based on the statements from several chief ministers following a video conference with the Prime Minister held a few days earlier.

Bantwal, Feb 2: A 45-year-old man was found murdered in a parked Innova car at Shantinagar near Nagri in Sajipa Munnur in Bantwal taluk today. 

The deceased has been identified as Tasleem, a native of Kerala who was wanted in a few criminal cases. He was, according to reports, a member of Kerala's notorious Ziya. 

Tasleem was an accused in Kalia Rafiq murder in Ullal (2017). He was arrested last year in connection with a jewellery store robbery case registered in Mangaluru North police station and was sent to Kalaburagi prison. He was later released on bail. 

Police are of the suspicion that a rival gang might have kidnapped him, tried to strangle him and then stabbed him in the stomach, before fleeing the spot.

The car had been parked at the spot since morning. The locals who grew suspicious at this informed the police. Circle inspector T D Nagaraj and other officers conducted spot investigation.

Mangaluru, Apr 12: The spread of COVID-19 in the country has been contained through the prompt, effective and timely measures taken by the Centre, BJP Karnataka president and Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel said on Sunday.
 
The Centre brought in stringent regulations including the lockdown at the right time and ensured that the pandemic did not spread rapidly, he told reporters here.
 
Kateel inspected the railway coaches which have been converted into isolation wards for infected patients at the central railway station here.
 
He said 20 out of the 32 railway coaches re-designed into wards by Southern Railway's Palakkad division, will be stationed here.
 
The wards are equipped with necessary medical equipment and facilities for doctors and paramedical staff.
 
Kateel said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has shown how such difficult situations need to be handled.
 
The lockdown was announced in time so that coronavirus spread was checked and all the central departments carried out their works efficiently to monitor the situation, he said.
 
Mangaluru South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath was also present.
