March 17, 2012

Mangalore, March 17: Tents are pitched, caravans are parked, excitement is high in air as Jumbo circus has come to town. The circus renowned for its dangerous acrobatic performances has a mix of Indian, Russian and African artistes who are all set to make Mangaloreans bite their finger nails.

The circus which was inaugurated on Friday by MCC Mayor Gulzar Banu kicked off with the famous 'Hawai Jula' as the first act. Here acrobats were swinging high in air making the crowd scream with awe with every somersault. The Jokers too had a part to play, making the crowd laugh when the joker fell on the net below while his pant was swaying in the swinging acrobat's hand.

Another unique act shown put up by Jumbo circus is the fish swallowing act. Here an artiste swallowed fish and then vomited them out alive. He also drank water from a jug and spurted it out in three different colours.

The parrots added delight to the show. The cockatoo parrots were seen balancing on poles, pulling a small cart, walking on tight ropes and climbing ladders. A juggling artiste stole the spotlight when he managed to catch a set of plates which were thrown to him. He brilliantly juggled bottles, caps, balls and also balanced four bottles on the tip of another bottle.

A bendable babe from North East dangerously flexed her body into various postures while balancing candle stands in her mouth, hands and legs. The saree acrobatic show, ring ballet, hula-hoop, balancing things on legs, acrobatics using only hands were other performances which were appreciated by the audience.

The circus will have daily shows at 1 pm, 4 pm and 7 pm.

Speaking at the inauguration, Moodbidri MLA Abhaychandra Jain, went down the memory lane and remembered how he used to wait for the circus to come to town. “With technology and modernisation, many do not visit circus. This art is losing its importance and it needs encoragement,” he said.

KPCC Secretary Ivan D'Souza stressed that circus should not be a dying art. Instead, it should be a growing art. MCC Deputy Mayor Amitha Kala was also present.

Origin of Jumbo

It was on October 2, 1977, in Dhanapur town, Bihar that Jumbo Circus had its maiden performance, under the enterprising leadership of M V Shankaran. The Jumbo Circus, pioneered the introduction of world class Russian artistes in the Indian Circus and heralded a new era of Indo-Soviet Cultural Exchange.

The troupe which is performing in Mangalore is the second unit of Jumbo Circus. The highlight of this unit is that it has an African troupe from Tanzania who will have their first performance in Mangalore.

Bengaluru, Apr 1: The state government has identified five districts, including Dakshina Kannada, as 'cluster zones' or 'Red zones,' to prevent the spread of Novel Coronavirus.

The other four districts include Mysuru, Uttara Kannada, Bengaluru and Chikkaballapur.

Mangaluru has been under strict lockdown, as it is close to Kasargod in Kerala, which reported many positive cases and is also one of the 'hotspots' in the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) list.

Bengaluru, Mar 9: The political crisis faced by Kamal Nath government in Madhya Pradesh appears to have accentuated with 13 party MLAs and six ministers reported to be in Bengaluru.

The developments have come amid factional differences in the party unit and at a time the party has to finalise its Rajya Sabha candidates from the state.

Sources said the number of Congress MLAs who were in Bengaluru had gone up to 19 and one more MLA expected to reach Bengaluru by Monday night. They said the MLAs have come in batches and include six ministers from Madhya Pradesh.

The developments came on a day state chief Chief Minister Kamal Nath met party chief Sonia Gandhi and discussed the political situation in the state.

The sources said that MLAs are likely to be shifted to a resort on the outskirts of Bengaluru.

According to the sources, BJP Mahadevpura MLA Arvind Limbavali has been in touch with the Congress MLAs. They said 16 MLAs were brought at HAL airport Bengaluru by a special flight and were staying in a hotel at present.

The session of Madhya Pradesh assembly will begin on March 16 and the BJP may bring no-confidence motion against the Kamal Nath government.

Kamal Nath had said after his meeting with Gandhi that Congress MLAs who were reportedly missing have returned and had informed him that they were on 'tirth yatra'.

"Congress MLAs came back and said to me that they went on' tirth yatra (pilgrimage)".

The Congress has accused the BJP of trying to topple the party government. Party leader Digvijaya Singh had earlier alleged that BJP leaders Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Narottam Mishra were offering bribes of Rs 25-35 crore to Congress MLAs in order to bring down the Congress government in the state. The BJP had refuted the allegations.

In 2018 assembly elections, Congress won 114 seats in the 230-member Assembly and formed the government with the support of four Independent MLAs and two BSP MLAs and a legislator from the Samajwadi Party (SP). The BJP had secured 109 seats in the state assembly.

Last week,Madhya Pradesh Labour Minister Mahendra Singh Sisodia had warned that the state government will face a crisis if it "ignores or disrespects" party leader Jyotiraditya Scindia.

Scindia had said last month that he will not hesitate to hit the roads if promises made in a manifesto by Kamal Nath-led government in Madhya Pradesh were not fulfilled.

Kamal Nath had responded to the remarks saying, "To utar jayein" (Let him hit the streets if he wants to).

Congress MLA Bisahulal Singh, who was "missing" for the past few days, returned to Bhopal on Sunday and said he had gone on a pilgrimage.

Independent MLA Surendra Singh said on Monday that he was hoping to become a minister in Madhya Pradesh government soon.
