Gulf dirt track national championship begins in city

Mangalore, March 17: The country's leading two wheeler riders were in action at the opening round of the Gulf Dirt Track National Championship 2012, a round of FMSCI National Championship.

The two-day popular dirt track national championship sponsored by Gulf Oil Corporation was inaugurated on Saturday evening at the Fisheries College grounds here.

The event is being organised by Mumbai's Sportscraft in association with Mangalore Motor Sports Association. The event is the first five rounds of this FMSCI championship.

The race is an exercise in judicious maneuvering and good balance of the bike aroud the many sharp bends.

The riders are competing for the honour as well as the total prize money of Rs 1,75,000 along with the trophies. Whereas for the champions who garner maximum points in all five rounds a total prize money of Rs 4,50,000 and trophies will be awarded.

For racing enthusiasts of Mangalore the event was a rare treat. Besides some class riding they also had the opportunity to see latest dirt racing bikes from the TVS Motors, Yamaha and Honda stables on the inaugural day. Riders from all over India were seen in action.

Kalaburagi, Apr 25: In order to make people aware about the precautionary steps required to be taken in order to contain the spread of coronavirus, Muslim clerics here are making announcements from mosques after 'Azaan' urging people to follow the government guidelines to keep infection at bay.

Speaking to news agency, Ateeq Ur Rahman Ashrafi, All India Imams Council Karnataka's state president, said, "Under our council, there are around 80 mosques and after Azaan we are spreading awareness about COVID-19. I also appeal to other mosques to make such announcements and follow government guidelines."

This year, due to the spread of the virus, Muslim clerics have requested people to offer prayers inside their homes and avoid any kind of social gathering.

The country is under lockdown till May 3. All religious places including mosques have been closed to stop the transmission of the highly contagious virus.

Bengaluru, Feb 27: Union Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan on Wednesday said the Union Government will take up the issue of establishing a US consulate in Bengaluru during bilateral talks with the US officials in the future.

Speaking at a seminar on Videsh Sampark here, Mr Muraleedharan said after Delhi and Mumbai, a large number of visa applications come from Bengaluru. “We will take up the issue of establishing a US consulate in Bengaluru during bilateral talks,” he said.

Earlier, the chief secretary of Karnataka TM Vijay Bhaskar urged the centre to consider the state government’s demand of setting up a US Consulate in Bengaluru. At the moment visa applicants have to travel to Chennai for the purpose.

Mangaluru, April 3: A police officer in Sullia town of Dakshina Kannada district got injured on Friday after unidentified youth pelted stones at him.

The incident took place when the cop stopped them from entering into the state from Kerala in the view of nationwide lockdown. He was later administered medical aid.
