Another luxury cruise vessel calls at New Mangalore Port

Mangalore, March 22: Cruise vessel M V Aid Diva with 1869 cruise passengers and 607 crew members on board called at New Mangalore Port on Wednesday.

This is the 14th cruise vessel calling at the Port during the current financial year 2011-12. The vessel came to Port from Cochin and sailed to Goa in the evening. Majority of the passengers were from Germany.

As many as 1700 passengers have opted for ground tour arranged by M/s Globe International, Mangalore, the local tour operators.

The passengers have visited places like cashew processing unit at Bykampady, 1000 Pillar Jain temple, Moodabidri, Soans Farm, monolithic statue of gomateshwara, at Karkala, Gokarnanatha temple, Kadri temple, St.Aloysius chapel, etc. J M Baxi & Co were the agents of the vessel.

It was cruise liner's repeated call to the Port during the current financial year, as her first call was on November last year. The next vessel M V Seven Seas Voyager will be calling at the Port in March.

Dr. P. Tamilvanan, Chairman, NMPT has stated that the number of cruise passengers who have called at the Port in 14 cruise vessels during the current year is 8726 out of which 6432 have visited various places in and around Mangalore which will be a boon to the tourism development of Karnataka and in particular to Mangalore region.

Bengaluru, Aug 5: Touted as a first of its kind in the nation, a mobile Covid-19 lab was inaugurated on Wednesday by the Karnataka Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar.

The lab, approved by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) can do 9,000 RT-PCR (reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction) tests per month, an official press release said here. "This is a unique lab having all safety features and capable of producing 100% accurate results within four hours," Dr Sudhakar was quoted as saying in the press release.

The Indian Institute of Science (IISC) had developed the lab and handed it over to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS).

The mobile lab can also be used for molecular diagnostic-testing and can be deployed in coronavirus hot spots quickly, the release said adding, apart from Covid-19, the lab can be utilised for testing H1N1, HCV, TB, HPV and HIV among others.

Mangaluru, Mar 26: About 2,771 people are home-quarantined in the wake of the novel coronavirus in Dakshina Kannada district here, Deputy Commissioner said on Wednesday.

"Meanwhile, about 20 people have completed the mandated 28 days of quarantine, DC Sindhu B Rupesh said in a statement here.

More than 38,000 people from the district have been screened and seven are admitted and are under observation, he added.

Bengaluru, Jun 5: Karnataka registered its highest single-day spike of more than 500 new COVID-19 cases, taking the total number of infections in the state to 4,835, the health department said on Friday.

The previous biggest single-day spurt was recorded on June 2 with 388 cases.

Of the 515 fresh cases reported, 482 are returnees from other states, mostly (about 471) from neighboring Maharashtra. Udupi district saw a major spike with over 200 cases today and the total tally of the district breaching seven hundred cases mark, to stand at 768.

As of June 5 evening, cumulatively 4,835 COVID-19 positive cases have been confirmed in the state, which includes 57 deaths and 1,688 discharges, the department said in its bulletin.

It said, out of 3,088 active cases, 3,075 patients are in isolation at designated hospitals and are stable, while 13 are in ICU.

On Friday, 83 patients have been discharged.

According to state COVID-19 war room data, out of the total 4,835 cases, 93 per cent (4,488 cases) are asymptomatic and 7 per cent (347) are symptomatic.

The new cases include 471 from Maharashtra, three from Delhi, two each from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Haryana, and one from Tamil Nadu.

While one is with international travel history from Indonesia. Remaining cases include- contacts of patients earlier tested positive, those from containment zones, those who travelled from other districts, and the ones whose contact history is still being traced.

Among the districts where new cases were reported, Udupi accounts for 204 cases, followed by 74 from Yadgir, Vijayapura 53, Kalaburagi 42, Bidar 39, Belagavi 36, Mandya 13, Bengaluru Rural 12, Bengaluru Urban 10, Dakshina Kannada 8, Uttara Kannada 7, three each from Hassan, Dharwad and Chikkaballapura, two each from Ramanagara and Haveri, and one each from Davangere, Bagalkote, Ballari and Kolar.

Udupi district tops the list of positive cases, with a total of 768 infections, followed by Kalaburagi 552 and Bengaluru urban 434.

Among discharges, Bengaluru urban still tops the list with total 271 discharges, followed by Davangere 147 and Mandya 146.

A total of 3,60,720 samples were tested so far, out of which 13,627 were tested on Friday alone.

So far 3,49,951 samples have reported as negative, and out of them 12,797 were reported negative on Friday.
