Coast Guard to set up radar stations in Suratkal, Bhatkal

Mangalore, March 25: Stepping up its vigil, the Coast Guard has planned to set up new radar stations in two sensitive coastal towns of Dakshina Kannada and Uttara Kannada districts.

Rajender Singh Sapal, Commandant, Coast Guard, Karwar, said that new radar stations would come up in Suratkal, near Mangalore and Bhatkal near Karwar in the next three months.

“The radars would cover the coastal Karnataka and keep an eye on the movement of vessels in the Arabian Sea”, he said.

The proposed radars would keep a track of the moving boats of the Goa coast also. It will also be helpful in getting information on weather. Indian coast guard would distribute 6,000 life jackets among the fishermen. These jackets would be distributed before next monsoon.

He said that the identity cards would be given to the fishermen soon. The Minster for Fisheries would inaugurate the distribution programme.

Mr. Sapal advised Fishermen to go for fishing in groups. He asked them to keep identity card while in the sea. He also advised the fishermen not to take the minors for fishing as it is illegal. He asked the fishermen to call toll free number 1554 if any non-Indian boat was found or any help from the Coast Guard was required.

Karnataka govt to hold first of it's kind virtual job fair on July 10

Bengaluru, Jul 5: In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic and the fear of layoffs lurking everywhere, the state government is holding a first-of-its-kind virtual job fair on July 10, to help people find jobs commensurate with their skill sets.

Co-ordinated by the Karnataka Skill Development Corporation (KSDC), the job fair will see participation of more than 40 companies for about 6,000 job openings.

The government will connect companies with job seekers who have registered on the recently-launched Skill Connect portal or on the Kaushalya Karnataka’s portal for migrant workers from the state who have returned home.

A candidate can either directly apply to a company, or await the portal to match their skills with available jobs. There is also a self-evaluation section on the website which will suggest whether a candidate needs to further skill oneself or whether they are eligible for jobs with their current set of skills.

Firms such as Life Insurance Corporation, Barbeque Nation and Arvind Mills are among the participants.

JD(S) MLA B Satyanarayana passes away

Bengaluru, Aug 4: Janata Dal (Secular) leader and MLA Satyanarayana passed away today due to multiple organ failure. He was 67.

Satyanarayana was representing Tumakuru’s Sira constituency in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. He is survived by five daughters and one son.

It is learnt that he was suffering from multiple organ ailments from the past few days and was recently admitted to Manipal Hospital in the city. He breathed his last at 12:20 p.m.

He contested from JDS and worked three times as MLA and 2 times as MP. He was the chairman of KSRTC during the coalition government led by HD Kumaraswamy.

Former Prime Minister HD Devegowda mourned his death and said, “It is a shock to hear the demise of former minister and my close friend. We are friends from the past 3 decades and I cannot recall the days without him.”

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President DK Shivakumar said, “Satyanarayana was concerned for the farmers and he was a gentleman. Hearing the news hurts me and this is an irreparable loss to the political field.”

COVID-19 signboards outside houses leading to neo-social discrimination: HDK

Bengaluru, Jul 20: Janata Dal (Secular) leader HD Kumaraswamy has urged the Karnataka government to stop putting warning signboards in front of COVID-19 patients' houses alleging that they are leading to "social discrimination and untouchability" in the present times.

"A local government warning signboards in front of the homes of COVID-19 infected people is leading to neo-social discrimination and untouchability in the new age. Even after infection, the individual and family should live with dignity. The government should immediately stop the practice of placing signboards," Kumaraswamy's first tweet read.

"Instead of placing them in front of their homes and creating untouchability, send health workers to their homes to create courage and awareness. They should be told not to leave the house. There is no such degrading practice left behind. I would like to ask Chief Minister Karnataka BS Yediyurappa to pay attention to this," he added.

The former chief minister further said that threatening to cancel the licenses of medical colleges for refusing treatment to patients would not solve the problem and urged the government to take them into confidence instead of rebuking them.

"Refusing treatment is the fault of any hospital. But for the same reason, threatening to cancel government medical college licenses is not right. There is no profit in this emergency of health. MCI also has the power to revoke the licenses of medical colleges. Remember not the government," he said.

"In this case, the government should look to the Medical Colleges to get their services in order to get them to trust them instead of getting angry. Let them focus on meeting their needs. I insist on a collective fight against the coronavirus through this," he further added.

The COVID-19 count in Karnataka reached 63,772 on Sunday, including 39,370 active cases and 23,065 cured and discharged patients.
