Steven Rego conferred Pa.Go. Award for his bid to save Nandini

Mangalore, March 26: The Padyana Gopalkrishna award for meritorious rural journalism was conferred on Vijaya Karnataka reporter from Belthangady Steven Rego for his article titled 'Nandini Mayavaguva Munna' here on Monday.

His article was about the disappearing Nandini river and its impact on the environment. The award is instituted by the Dakshina Kannada Working Journalist' Union and has been sponsored by Dharmadhikari of Dharmastala Veerendra Heggade.

Umanath Kotian, president of Tulu Sahitya Academy was the chief guest and did the honours of presenting the award at a simple function at the Press Club.

Steven Rego was chosen for the award from a list of three articles. These three articles from various other reporters were shortlisted by the judges for the award. The judges for the award were Paramananda Salian, Nandagopal and Sachita Nandagopal. The award includes a cash prize of Rs 5001, a citation and a shawl.

Speaking on the occasion Mr. Kotian said, ”Journalism is a profession which brings about change and development to the society. Padyana Gopalkrishna was a man who showed how to influence the public through writing. He had laid down guidelines for the Journalists to emulate. He upheld the values of Truth in the profession. “If more articles of this type came out then a significant change can be brought about in the society,” he said.

One of the jury for the award Mr. Salian said,” We have selected Steven's article based on language and this must be an encouragement for other journalists. His article contained all the right facts and quotes from the right people and was well supported by statistics. The choice of the topic was also excellent.”

Another Jury Nandagopal , a former reporter of The Times Of India also informed the audience that, ”a Journalistic report will have many aspects of Literature and Journalism is Literature in a hurry.”

Special stories should have their own deadline. Instead of giving an award for the best article it is better to judge the Journalistic work by finding out the skills used by the reporter to get a story. This award must confine itself to the rural reporting.

Responding to the honour, Mr. Rego expressed his gratitude towards the jury and the Dakshina Kannada District Working Journalists Union for having acknowledged his work.

President of the Union Harish Rai welcomed the gathering. Office-bearers Srinivas Nayak Indaje, Ravindra Shetty were present.

Mangaluru | Family’s presence of mind during covid victim’s last rites preserves communal harmony

Mangaluru, Jun 28: The patience and presence of mind exhibited by the family members of youth covid-19 victim thwarted the attempt by a few miscreants to create communal disharmony in the coastal city today.

A 31-year-old youth from Idya in Surathkal, who was under treatment for covid-19 at designated Wenlock Hospital in the city, passed away last night.

Even though there is a Muslim graveyard under the jurisdiction of Idya mosque, it was waterlogged due to heavy rains.

Hence, the Idya mosque management had obtained permission from Mangaluru’s Bolar mosque management to bury the mortal remains of the youth in Bolar graveyard.

All necessary arrangements were made at the Bolar graveyard for the burial this morning. Meanwhile, a few residents of Bolar belonging to another community staged a protest against bringing covid-19 victim’s mortal remains to Bolar.

Mohammad Husain, general secretary of Bolar mosque, said that the family members of the departed youth exhibited their presence of mind and urged the Muslims of Bolar to preserve communal harmony.

“The Bolar mosque committee had given green signal for the burial and all arrangements were made. Meanwhile, a few people staged protest and warned us against burying the covid-19 victim’s body. When the aggrieved family members came to know this, they immediately cancelled the plan,” he said.

“The aggrieved family requested us to uphold communal amity and co-existence. They decided to bury the body in Idya itself. Then the protesters also returned,” he said.

Burial in Bolar after DC’s intervention

When the mortal remains were being taken towards Surathkal in the ambulance, the Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada ordered the authorities concerned to take a U-turn and bring back mortal remains to Bolar.

The DC said it was wrong to take the mortal remains to another place after making all necessary armaments in Bolar graveyard. In order to pacify the porters it was decided to dig another grave on the other side of the graveyard, sources said.

if tommorow some of their family member die in COVID and we will see how they manage..

first we are all human being and we must repsect the dead person..

11 new COVID-19 cases reported in Karnataka; total 576

Bengaluru, May 1: Karnataka has reported 11 new cases of coronavirus, taking the State's count to 576, informed the Health Department on Friday.

Out of the total COVID-19 cases found in the State, 235 people have been discharged and 22 people have died.

"11 new COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in Karnataka from April 30, 5 pm till noon today, taking the total number of cases to 576, which includes 22 deaths and 235 discharges," said the State government COVID-19 bulletin.

London to Kolkata bus service? Yes, it’s real! Viral pics of 1957 make netizens curious

When the black and white photos of the ‘London to Calcutta (Kolkata) bus service’ went viral on social media recently, the response of some of the netizens was “stop spreading fake news!” But, it isn’t a fake news. The late 1950s indeed offered people a lavish bus trip from London to Kolkata.

While one of the viral images shows passengers at the Victoria Coach Station, London, boarding 'Albert', the other image show the same bus travelling through a valley. In another image the bus is stationed at a tourist spot. All these photos were captured during the bus’ maiden international journey in 1957.

An image of the bus ticket is also making rounds on social media, that shows the route of the bus — London, Belgium, West Germany, Austria,Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, West Pakistan, India. The route in India followed Delhi, Agra, Allahabad, Banaras and finally Calcutta.

The ticket shows that a one side travel cost 145 pounds (13,644 Rupees at the present day) back then, and it was inclusive of all the luxury provided during the run.

The luxurious bus provided the facilities of reading, individual sleeping bunks, radio/taped music for parties and pleasure and fan heaters, among other things. The brochure reads, "Your complete home while you travel."

Some of the tour highlights included Banaras on the Ganges, The Taj Mahal, The Raj Path, The Rhine Valley and The Peacock Throne. Passengers reportedly got free shopping days in New Delhi, Tehran, Salzburg, Kabul, Istanbul and Vienna.
