Mangalore, March 28: A showdown for the post of Dakshina Kannada Zilla Kannada Sahitya Parishat appears imminent with Pradeep Kumar Kalkura and Sarvotham Anchan filing nominations on Wednesday, the last day to file nomination for the election to be held on April 29.

Kalkura, who has been the unanimous choice in the last two terms, appears to be facing a stiff contest from Mr. Anchan, the former president of the Mangalore Taluk Kannada Sahitya Paarishat and industrialist. Both Kalkura and Anchan filed their nominations at the tahsildar's office accompanied by their supporters.

Mr. Kalkura was accompanied by the president of the Karnataka Yakshagana Bayalata Academy Kumble Sunder Rao and a host of others, including the office-bearers of district and taluk units of the literary body.

The prominent face in the Anchan camp was Harikrishna Punaroor, the former president of the State Kannada Sahitya Parishat. Former secretary of the district KSP Ganesh Amin Sankamar, Mahesh Nayak, Principal of St. Aloysius P.U. College Edward D'Silva, among others, were present.

Speaking after filing the nomination, Mr. Punaroor said it was time to bring some change at the KSP. “The members cutting across divisions of caste and religion should support Anchan,” he said.

At a consultation meeting a couple of weaks ago, Mr. Punaroor had declared that an impression was gaining ground that the post is reserved for Brahimins since the post had been held invariably by a Brahmin in the last several years.

Mr. Kalkura, being a protégé of Mr. Punaroor, was expected to stay away from the contest this time, but decided to throw his hat in the ring apparently at the last minute.

“I had to bow to the pressures of my well-wishers including the presidents of all the taluk KSP units. There is no question of caste here. I have been conducting the activities of the literary body without giving any consideration to caste or creed,” Mr. Kalkura told coastaldigest.com.

“A host of my ex-colleagues in the literary body wanted me to contest. Pople like Srinath, Subrahmanya, Vijayalakshmi Shetty and Taltaje Vasanth Kumar have persuaded me to file the nomination,” he said.

He also maintained that he did not like the idea of election for the president of a literary body and would rather prefer to be elected as a consensus candidate. “But in a democracy, election is also a way to elect the representative. The decision to field a candidate by Harikrishna Punaroor was not taken through proper consultation. I have enormous respect for him because he had been my mentor all these years. But enough efforts were not made to zero in on a consensus candidate,” he added.

When asked if there would be a unanimous choice with either of them withdrawing nomination, Mr. Kalkura did not give a direct answer. “We will wait. There is still time left,” he said.

Mangalore Taluk Tahsildar Ravichandra Nayak is the Nodal officer for the election. There are 1,932 eligible voters from five taluks namely Mangalore, Bantwal, Puttur, Sullia and Belthangady. Only those who are the members of the Parishat for the last three years are eligible to vote during the election. The nominations will be scrutinised on March 31 at the Mangalore taluk office and the last date for withdrawing the nomination is April 5.

The counting of votes will be held on the same day of the election, i.e, on April 29 evening. The election code of conduct is in force from February 2, 2012. The polling will be held at the Tahsildar's offices of five taluk centres between 8 am and 4 pm.

Mangaluru, Apr 28: Trucks carrying fish loads from Kerala will not be allowed to enter Dakshina Kannada district as the authorities are not being able to control the rush in markets, state Fisheries Minister and district-in-charge Kota Srinivas Poojary said Monday.

The deputy commissioner has been instructed to restrict the entry of fish transport vehicles from outside the district forthwith, in view of the difficulty in maintaining social distancing at the markets identified in the district, the minister told reporters here.

The coastal district has to take more precautionary measures to fight COVID-19 as the number of positive cases have risen in the last couple of days, he said.

Bengaluru, Feb 28: The Liquefied Petroleum Gas penetration in Karnataka is 'absolutely 100 per cent' due to the Prime Minister Ujjwala Yojana, Indian Oil Corporation Karnataka Executive Director D L Pramodh said here on Friday.

In 2014, LPG penetration in the State was only 68 per cent, but after the PMUY, massive number of gas connections were given in the last five years, he said, adding, "It is absolutely 100 per cent today."

"There are 1.6 crore LPG connections out of which around 31.5 lakh -- or around 20 per cent -- come under the PMUY. The 100 per cent LPG penetration in the state will help women in rural areas to make their kitchens smokeless. Against the national average of 2.88 cylinders per family per PMUY annually, the figure is Karnataka 3.4 cylinders in Karnataka," Pramodh told reporters.

On the initiative of blending ethanol with petrol, he said it's 8.6 per cent in Karnataka, the highest comparedto other states, where it's five per cent to 5.5 per cent. The state aims to increase it to 10 per cent. By March 31, the IOC would commission the Rs 10 crore Vapour Recovery System at the Devanagonthi terminal on the city outskirts which would ensure that vapour does not go out in the air when tankers are being filled with fuel. "This is an important measure taken tominimise pollution", he said.

Pramodh also said the IOC has started mobile fuel dispensers, delivering fuels at the doorsteps.

Regarding the IOC's preparedness for Electric Vehicle charging stations, Pramodh said the Ministry of Power has given the company a target to set up 500 charging stations across India in the first phase. The IOC has already signed MoUs with NTPC, Power Grid Corporation Limited, Hyundai Motors, Tech Mahindra and Tata Power in this regard.

In Karnataka, 58 sites have been identified for setting up charging and battery swapping stations.

"Total electric vehicle charging facilities planned by IOC in Karnataka by March 31 is 34, out of which 26 will be EVcharging sites and eight battery swapping stations," Pramodh said.

Bengaluru, Jun 25: Former Karnataka chief minister and Janata Dal (Secular) leader HD Kumaraswamy on Wednesday claimed that there are shortage of beds and ventilators to treat COVID-19 patients in the state.

In a series of tweets, he targetted the Karnataka government on COVID-19 management.

"The state government has failed to provide adequate treatment to those infected with corona. There are no beds and no ventilators to treat more than four thousand patients. Self-induced lockdown is the only solution," he tweeted.

In his subsequent tweet, he said, "Residents of the state, including Bangalore, now have only one way to escape from COVID-19. Stay at home and celebrate yourself as a self-proclaimed lockdown. Money is not more important than life. Your life is in your hands now."

In another tweet, former Chief Minister alleged that the government has fixed Rs 10-15,000 per day for COVID-19 treatment in private hospitals.

"The state government is also saying this indirectly. The 'home remedy' in the home is to stay at home and be safe. The government has fixed Rs 10-15,000 per day for the treatment of this infection in private hospitals. How poor can afford it while upper class can't afford," he tweeted.

"If four members of a family infected with corona, the cost of treatment for a 15-day treatment at a private hospital is Rs 5-6 lakh. Where do the poor bring that Much money? We must save our lives while the government is sitting incapable. This is my concern for the people of the state," he said in another tweet.

In a video message that HD Kumaraswamy demanded the state government to give all kinds of safety and security to the students who are writing the SSLC exam tomorrow.
HD Kumaraswamy also urged students to be careful.

About 8,48,203 students will appear in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination tomorrow, said Karnataka Health Minister B Sriramulu on Wednesday.
