Mangalore, March 29: The Father Muller Charitable Institutions, Kankanady, in association with Rotary Club of Mangalore launched on Thursday a Biogas Plant, which is capable of generating gas from wet garbage on their premises.

The plant has been set up at a cost of Rs 5 lakhs and can produce 14 Kgs of biogas from 300 Kgs of garbage will produce about 14 Kgs of biogas.

The aim is to convert the wet organic garbage generated in the campus to combustible methane gas. This is a pilot project undertaken to showcase the latest technology available to convert 'waste to value' and provide an alternate use other than to compost such waste. The technology has been provided by a company from Pune called Mail Hem Engineers Pvt Ltd, who are market leaders in providing solutions for solid waste management system. The basic concept of the design is based on a process known as Upward Anaerobic Sludge Blanket developed by Dr Lattingah in Netherlands.

The plant will consume around Rs 60 worth of electricity each day and will require about 200 litres of water to flush the garbage into the digester. One person is required to sort and load. This works out to be Rs 4000/ month. It is evident that this process is economically viable and has high commercial value paying back the entire investment in just 19 months.

Chief Executive Officer of D K Zilla Panchayath Dr K N Vijayprakash, , Dr Harish Kumar , Commissioner, Mangalore City Corporation, Fr Patrick Rodrigues, director Fr Muller Charitable Institutions and Richard Coelho, administrator- Fr Muller Charitable Institutions were present on the occasion.
