Mangalore, April 1: Navakarnataka book store will strive to take the legacy of Athree book store forward, said R S Rajaram, Managing Director, Navakarnataka publications after the book store was inaugurated at Balmatta in Mangalore on Sunday.

Addressing the gathering at the formal programme held at Sahodaya auditorium after the inauguration of the new book store, Mr. Rajaram said that Athree and Navakarnataka publications had been maintaining good relations from the past several years. He even recalled his association with the father of G N Ashokvardhan, who owned the Athree book store and said that both Athree and Navakarnataka book stores stand for similar principles. “We are not into the black business of books, neither have we tried pleasing the government. We held our own exhibitions across the state and it is through our readers that we have grown to this level”, he said.

Recalling the genesis of Navakarnataka publications in 1960, Mr. Rajaram said that in those days Mangalore was blessed with many intellectuals and people with intellectual thinking. “But today the situation has changed. Today killings and violence in the name of religion and culture has risen”, he said.

Prof B A Viveka Rai, litterateur and visiting professor at the Wurzburg University of Germany, inaugurated the book store. In his address, he emphasized on encouraging literature with scientific temper. “Athree book store was an example of how an institution based on ideology could be built. One could not find books on astrology or jyotishya-shastra, and other superstitions and blind beliefs at Athree book store. Navakarnataka publications have also encouraged literature with scientific temper”, he opined.

Lamenting that there is a huge 'publishing lobby' that works behind the scenes making book publishing a dirty business, Mr. Rai stated that Mr. Ashokvardhan was an exception. “One expects morality in trade. But today the exponents of morality (books) are being used for immoral purposes”, he said.

Mr. Rai also said that although many are understandably unhappy with Mr. Ashokvardhan's decision to shut Athree down, they must allow him to lead his life the way he wants to. “Everybody wants a retired life. Why should we stop him. He is interested in environmental issues and Yakshagana. We must allow him to do what he wants and stopping him from closing down would be selfish on our part”, he said.

Expressing his thoughts on the occasion Mr. Ashokvardhan said that when he decided to close down Athree, he wanted to make sure that the book business does not get orphaned and hence chose Navakarnataka publications for the hand-over.

Navakarnataka book store has begun sales and has announced 20% discount on book sales for a month.

Thiruvanathapuram, Mar 27: The state is heading for its worst ever crisis with coronavirus cases increasing rapidly and Kasargod district the worst hit. On Friday alone 39 positive cases were reported in the state of which 34 are from Kasargod.

Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan said the situation is grave and Kasargod has been the worst hit. More than the positive cases reported in the district, the worrying factor is that many people have come into contact with these positive cases.

The chief minister warned that the government will be forced to declare the names of the people who are defying the quarantine guidelines in the district. More people have been put under risk in the district and the district administration is much concerned since the results of 215 samples are yet to come.

There is no other way but to tighten the restrictions imposed in the district against the people coming out of their houses. The government has decided to provide more facilities to the hospitals in Kasargod and Kannur to meet an emergency.

The medical college hospital in Kannur will be converted into a coronavirus hospital with 200 bed strength. Steps have been taken to equip the medical college hospital with more facilities. The Central University at kasargood will be converted into as a temporary coronavirus treatment centre.

The state has also requested permission from ICMR to begin the testing facility here, said the chief minister.

On Friday of the 39 positive cases, two are from Kannur and one each from Thrissur, Kollam and Kozhikode. With this all the districts in the state have been now affected with coronavirus.

Alappuzha, Jan 4: The management committee of a mosque in Kerala is all set to solemnize the wedding of a Hindu couple, setting yet another instance of the communal harmony prevailing in Kerala.

The Cheravally Muslim Jamaat Committee at Kayamkulam in Alappuzha district in South Kerala is conducting the marriage of Anju and Sharath after the bride's mother approached the Jamaat authorities seeking help.

The marriage will be held at the mosque premises on January 19 as per Hindu rituals and the Jamaat Committee has also prepared the invitations.

Anju's father Ashokan died a few years back and her mother Bindhu was struggling to win bread for her three children. Nujumudeen Alummoottil, a businessman and secretary of the Jamaat had helped the family earlier also.

Hence Bindu sought his help for the marriage of Anju. Nujumudeen discussed it with other members of the Jamaat committee and members of the mosque.

Najumudeen said that there was no hesitation from anyone on conducting the marriage by the mosque at its premises. A gift in cash and gold would be also given to the couple.

Kerala recently witnessed a church allowing the Muslim believers who participated in an anti-CAA meet to offer namaz at the church premises and another church conducting a carol service with the youth of the parish dressed up in traditional Muslim attire.

Kerala is unique in India for cordial relation between different religions.  However, this is not being digested by sanghis and are trying to build gulf between the communities.  I am sure that people will not let theese anti national succeed in their wicked behaviour.   This communal harmoney is a slap on the faces of enemies of society.    Well done keralites.  Salute to all of you.
