Lawyers furious over tardy pace of new court premises work

Mangalore, April 2: The lawyers in Mangalore, in association with State Lawyers Parishat will conduct a two-day 'Advocate's Conference' at Loyola Hall in St Aloysius College on April 22 and 23.

Chief Minister Sadananda Gowda , Law Minister Suresh Kumar, Chief Justice of Odisha High Court Gopal Gowda, Judges of Karnataka High Court Nagamohan Das , Abdul Nazeer , Indrakala and A S Boppanna will participate in the conference.

About 2,000 lawyers from Kodagu, Udupi, North Karnataka, Shimoga and Hassan will participate in the conference, said S. P. Changappa, President of the Mangalore Bar Association at a press meet here on Monday. Ganesh Shenoy, secretary, Shreedevi, Joint Secretary and Vice president Narasimha Hegde were present.

The construction work of the building of Mangalore District Court has still not been completed even after six years of its commencement. After demolishing the old building, more than six courts were shifted to the Mangalore City Corporation building and other places. For the last six years lawyers have been made to run from one building to the other for their cases. Even though the Chief Minister and Law minister have taken note of this there has been no progress in the construction work of the lawyer's building. Even in this year's budget there has been no allocation of funds for this work, Mr. Chengappa said.

Being a lawyer and also hailing from D K District, Sadananda Gowda must immediately release funds for the construction work and from June 1, the courts which have been shifted to Mangalore City Corporation building and other places must be transferred to the new building. “Failing which lawyers will have to take recourse to protest,” he warned.

Bengaluru, Apr 7: Former Minister and Leader of the Opposition Siddaramiah on Tuesday termed the shutting by private clinics in the state by doctors as an 'inhuman act'.

Taking to micro-blogging site Twitter, the Congress leader said due to the fear of Novel Coronavirus, the doctors have closed their private clinics, which was against their profession.

This has affected the people, especially those, who are suffering from other deceases. He urged Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa to intervene and resolve the issue immediately.

Despite the government instructions not to close down their clinics, the doctors have not been responding positively, Mr Siddaramaiah noted.

In this connection, the government should act seriously and give necessary warning to the doctors, to either open their clinics to serve the people, or face action, he added.

Bengaluru, Aug 4: With preparations underway for conducting exams for the final semester/ year students in the state, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister Dr CN Ashwathnarayan on Monday directed the respective universities to conduct exams for the backlog papers as well.

"In the wake of COVID-19, it has been decided to hold exams only for the students of final semester/year courses. It has come to our notice that some universities have decided against conducting exams for final year students who have a backlog to clear from previous semesters. This is unpardonable," the Deputy Chief Minister said.

"Our intention is to see that the final year students finish their course. In the present situation, conducting only final semester exams won't help. We have to help the students in clearing their backlogs," added Ashwathnarayan, directing all universities to compulsorily conduct these exams.

Meanwhile, Ashwathnarayan thanked the staff and officials of various government departments who were responsible for successfully conducting the CET exams even amidst the difficult situation in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic.

"In all, 1,94,419 students had registered for the CET exams, of which 1,75,428 wrote the exams. The percentage of students who took up the exams this year was equivalent to that of the previous years, in normal times," the DCM informed.

"After we successfully conducted the exams, Arunachal Pradesh is going to conduct the Public Service Commission exams on the lines of how we successfully conducted the exams. Likewise, even our KPSC has said it will conduct the exams. We must appreciate the good work of the Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA), which has set an example for others," Ashwathnarayan said.

The deputy chief minister said that 33 colleges in various districts across the state faced shortage of land and that it is the responsibility of the District Commissioners (DCs) to get the lands sanctioned for all these colleges.
In Bagalkot district alone land has not been sanctioned for six degree colleges, he said.

Reacting to this, Bagalkot DC Captain Rajendra assured to look into the matter as soon as he receives the proposal from department officials.

"Similarly, there is shortage of land for five Diploma colleges and 28 ITI colleges in different parts of the state. The DCs must immediately pay attention to this. Once they get the land, buildings will come up within no time," the Karnataka deputy chief minister said.

Mangaluru, Mar 29: Infosys Foundation Chairperson Sudha Murty has sent the second consignment of N95 Masks, Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and Sanitisers worth about Rs 73 lakhs, City police Commissioner Dr P S Harsha said on Sunday.

"These will be primarily used by Doctors, Nurses and Paramedics of Wenlock Hospital here and masks by the frontline staff of ASHA and police at risk of exposure to the virus,” Dr Harsha tweeted on Sunday.

The district has received the first consignment with critical medical equipment worth Rs 28 lakh from the Infosys foundation on Saturday, March 28.
