Mangalore, April 2: Journalists in Dakshina Kannada district have raised their collective voice against the continued attack on media persons.

A delegation of Dakshina Kannada Working Journalists' Union led by its president Harish Rai on Monday met Deputy Commissioner N S Chennappa Gowda and handed over him a memorandum addressed to Chief Minister D V Sadanada Gowda.

The memorandum condemned the attack on Shashidhar Poyyathabail, the cameraman with Mangalore based Namma Nadu Kannada channel by a group of miscreants during Talapady Kambala last Saturday night. It demanded the government to ensure proper protection of journalists.

The memorandum also urged the CM to order a probe into the attack and take appropriate action against culprits.

It said that the attacks on journalists during Kambala are not new in Dakshina Kannada district, as some goons involve in such sports. The government should take appropriate measures to stop such a trend, it added.

The DKWJU opined that the Kambala can be considered as a government programme, as the State has already announced fund to preserve and promote this folk sport. And hence, it is the responsibility of the organisers to make proper arrangements for the media persons and spectators at the event, it said.

Ramakrishna R, Anil Kumar Jogi, Shrinivas Nayak, Tharanath Kapikad, Satish Ira and Naveen Soorije were part of the delegation.

Mangaluru, Feb 12: More than 7,000 people at Mangalore International Airport (MIA) and over 1,000 at the New Mangalore Port (NMP) have undergone thermal screening for the novel coronavirus in the past few days, a taluk health official said on Wednesday.

A few more ships are scheduled to arrive at the port and all precautionary measures to check the ship’s passengers and crew are ready, he said.

Soon after a positive case of deadly pathogen surfaced in Kerala, the district health officials here actively started monitoring all entry points in the bordering district.

Apart from Mangaluru, there is bus connectivity to Puttur, Sullia, Bantwal, Dharmasthala and Subrahmanya from Kerala. More than eight to 10 trains arrive at Mangaluru daily from Kerala.

Hence, it is impossible to take up screening of all the vehicles arriving from Kerala, sources in District Health and Family Welfare said.
